7 Fun Ponytail Variations To Rock On Your Next Run

All of these ponytail variations can be done in just a few minutes. Nothing complicated here! Check them out and rock your next run with a fun new hairstyle. Of course, you will need a strong elastic that holds your hair without damaging it. This one and this one are my favorites and very inexpensive.

High Ponytail

My go to for an easy fun look. Simply gather all of your hair in and secure it as high as you can on your head. For medium or long hair.

Low Ponytail

A great option for shorter hair. Works well paired with a headband to keep back flyaways.

The Cheerleader

A fun and flirty take on the ponytail. Gather half of your hair and secure it as a high ponytail. A nice option for a shorter run or when you need to go “run” errands afterward.

Double Ponytail

Youthful and fun this easy double ponytail works well with layered hair.

Princess Ponytail

This tiered look is great for longer hair. Gather a small section of hair at the top of your head and secure it with an elastic. Gather another section farther down and combine with the first piece and secure. Continue moving down and adding the previous section.

The Baseball cap ponytail

Super low maintenance runner? Pop on a baseball cap and pull your ponytail through the opening and secure.

The High Bun

A little more sophisticated yet casual. Gather all of your hair into a high bun and secure it with an elastic. Wrap the ponytail around the base and secure it with a second elastic.

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

    Very cool variations, Deborah!
Thanks for the photos too! I bet your neighbours were wondering what you were doing, haha!

I use the double ponytail all the time. I like it because it keeps the hair from “bouncing around” and is quickly done.

One of my favorites as well! Oh yes, I believe my neighbors are way past thinking I am crazy 🙂

Nice! I like a ponytail plaited or two braids myself, as well as the standard through-the-hat – also if you put your hat on then do a fat bun it keeps your hat on if it’s windy!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 7:59 am

I love the look of the braids but I never quite get them right!

Now that I cut my hair I don’t have too many options for my ponytail- I just pull it back in whatever way will catch all the hair! When my hair was long I had to braid it otherwise it would get really knotty after my runs.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 8:01 am

I like the look of a braid but I never quite get it to look nice enough on myself

  4. Marcia says

These are all so fun! The last time I got my hair cut I forgot to remind her to leave enough for a ponytail and she left baaaarely enough. It was troubling! Haha!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 8:04 am

OH no! That can be a problem!

  5. Kimberly Hatting says

Great variations! I think I’ve used all of them, but my usual go-to is the top knot (high ponytail, but “pulled through” part way at the base of the tail). I go with braids if I’m wearing a stocking hat, most times, to avoid the messy, knotted under-layers.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 8:08 am

Your hair is nice and long so you can rock a bunch of different varieties!

  6. Debbie says

    03/03/2021 at 8:17 am

Fun ideas! I usually go with a high ponytail unless I’m wearing a hat. In the summer when the hair on my neck drives me crazy I’ll do a bun, French braid or a braided high ponytail.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 8:56 am

I love the braided look but I have to spend way too much time on it to make it look good

  7. Darlene S Cardillo says

    03/03/2021 at 9:03 am

These are fun. I’m a baseball cap ponytail all the way except in the winter. It is usually in a braid because my hair is so wild and unruly.

Of course they all look great on you!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 9:46 am

I love the idea of braids but I don’t do them well on my own head!

  8. Lauren - Running for Wellness says

    03/03/2021 at 9:19 am

Deborah, these are such great ideas! I wear my hair in the same ponytail every time I run, but I have been thinking about different ways to switch it up and try something new. Thanks for these ideas! They’re really cute too!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 9:47 am

Great! Can’t wait to see which you choose 🙂

  9. Kim G says

I’m pretty boring and always wear my hear in a tight bun but I’m also a fan of the high pony!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 9:49 am

      2 classics! Always good!

  10. Chocolaterunsjudy says

    03/03/2021 at 9:49 am

Fun post Deborah! I often put my hair in a high bun — even in Winter (because my hat has a ponytail hole & my bun is big with all that hair).

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 9:49 am

      That works too year round!

  11. Jenny says

    03/03/2021 at 10:21 am

Wow, you’re way more creative than I am! I go for the low ponytail every. single. time. Maybe if I get crazy I’ll try the baseball cap ponytail, ha ha. My hair is very fine, so i don’t have a lot of options. i guess the upside of that is there are fewer tangles to get out after a long run!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 5:21 pm

      Live on the edge! 🙂

  12. Mae says

I love all these fun ponytails variations! I usually just do the high ponytail, and now I can’t wait to try the princess ponytail!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 5:23 pm

Fantastic! Tag me in a photo on IG would love to see it

  13. Jenn says

    03/03/2021 at 2:14 pm

    These are cute!

My hair gets very knotted very quickly, so I tend to stick to the high bun, high pony, or two braids. I like the the princess pony a lot.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 5:24 pm

The princess ponytail is super fun!

  14. Mimi says

    03/03/2021 at 5:06 pm

I’m definitely a high bun girl, I hate when my hair slaps my face!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 5:24 pm

It can be annoying for sure

  15. Lori Bosworth says

    03/03/2021 at 5:37 pm

I love the high ponytail on other women; not sure if I can pull it off. I do wear the baseball cap ponytail!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/03/2021 at 6:20 pm

You only live once! Give it a try! Low commitment 🙂

  16. Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says

I’m team Power Bun. Which is really a high ponytail wrapped up in a bun. The last time that we went on vacation (sniff…before the pandemic) there was one morning where I couldn’t find the 2nd elastic that I needed to make the bun so I did a pony and my hair got so tangled up that I spent almost as much time combing it out as I did running. Never again!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 12:54 pm

I do the power bun a lot for gym workouts

  17. Helen Little says

    03/04/2021 at 3:42 am

Love these fun variations on a classic ponytail! I have a ponytail most days and it really works for running.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 12:58 pm

yes it does and it’s fun to mix it up

  18. Laura says

    03/04/2021 at 7:51 am

I usually am low maintenance and do the baseball cap pony, but the princess pony looks nice for keeping my hair from turning into a tangled mess on summer runs! I often also do a ponytail braid.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 12:58 pm

I love the princess ponytail and plan to do it more often myself

  19. Julie says

    03/04/2021 at 9:31 am

What great options! I need to mix it up with some of these great ideas. I do kind of a middle pony because my high one always falls. lol 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 1:13 pm

it is fun to mix it up!

  20. Natalie says

    03/04/2021 at 11:04 am

Great options. Love them all. But my favorite would be a high ponytail. Now that I’m seeing you with all these cute hairstyles, I’m thinking of growing my hair again. 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 1:13 pm

      ha great!

  21. Leslie says

Fun post! My daughter has totally been rocking ‘The Cheerleader” lately! I always go back and forth between the high pony and low pony!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 4:29 pm

It is fun to mix it up

  22. Angela says

    03/04/2021 at 3:50 pm

I love all of these styles, so cute! I need to let my hair grow a little more before I can do the Princess style!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/04/2021 at 4:29 pm

That is a fun one 🙂

  23. Cari says

    03/05/2021 at 3:36 pm

The Cheerleader was my bitmoji forever even when I cut my hair because it is just my style. Even did a version of it with Topsy Tail for my brother’s wedding.
I want to cut my hair to be done with the dyed portions, but I’m also so close to a pony tail. “Summer of Pigtails” was my 2020 highlight

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/05/2021 at 7:51 pm

Ha I remember the topsy tail! Why did we stop using them?

      • Cari says

        03/05/2021 at 9:15 pm

No idea! They were so fun and easy. I wasn’t a bridesmaid (they knew I didn’t want to, but would have if they asked) but the stylist did my hair and she was unsure at first but then had fun playing with it.
