Confession: I am a recovering sugar addict and I didn’t even know it! Really? Yes, really. I had no idea that I was eating so much sugar until I started tracking it. I’ve been on a mission to cut added sugars wherever possible and reading labels like it’s my job. I revamped my diet and I am excited to share my favorite quick and easy, low sugar, healthy snack ideas.
Quick and Easy Low Sugar Healthy Snack Ideas
Why is it a good idea to limit added sugars in your diet?
A diet with large amounts of added refined sugar brings extra calories with no nutritional value. These calories can often lead to weight gain and contribute to higher cholesterol and triglycerides. Some sugars occur naturally in whole fruits and vegetables – these are the types of sugars we should aim to consume if we’re having sugar. Switching to a lower sugar diet has also been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Of course, make sure to consult your doctor for their personal recommendation for your diet!
I switched up my snack routine and came up with a new low sugar snack list.
Low fat cheese and nuts
A serving of low fat cheese and nuts offers up a great dose of calcium and protein without any added sugar.
Veggies and hummus
Celery and cucumbers are my favorite vehicle to dip into hummus. As always, check the label on your hummus to make sure it is sugar free.
Unsweetened Greek Yogurt and fresh fruit
All yogurt is not created equal and it’s important to check the label. Greek yogurt and fruit are a filling and satisfying snack.
Hard boiled eggs
Pure protein and no added sugar. Hard boiled eggs are a great snack on their own or topped with a little guacamole.
Plain popped corn
Make your own microwave popped corn for a filling high fiber snack without any added sugar.
Need an on-the-go snack?
Enter Quest Hero Bars. Perfect for on-the-go fueling and snacking. These high protein chocolate coated bars have no added refined sugars, but they taste like a candy bar. How does that work? They are sweetened with DOLCIA PRIMA® Allulose which is a non-artificial sweetening ingredient that provides the taste and texture of sugar without the calories. Dolcia Prima Allulose is a rare sugar that is extracted from raisins and figs.
For those looking to reduce both sugar intake and calories without giving up the taste and texture of sugar, Dolcia Prima Allulose is a fantastic option.
- Keto and Paleo diets: Allulose is an acceptable sweetener that provides a sweet taste but does not raise blood glucose or insulin levels.
- Diabetic-conscious diets: Allulose is not included in sugars, but in the carbohydrates; it should not be counted toward carbohydrates that impact blood sugar levels.
Quest Hero Bars satisfy that sweet craving without the added sugar, calories or carbs. I enjoy the texture and the chocolate caramel pecan flavor is as good as it sounds. A strong contender for my favorite post-workout refuel. Little known insider tip: microwave your Quest Bar for 15 seconds for an even more dessert-like experience.
Good Measure Almond & Dark Chocolate Creamy Nut Butter Bar
If you like a nutty, more subtly sweet and softer snack bar, Good Measure creamy nut butter bars are made for you. They’re made from nuts, nut butter and seeds. With 8 grams of protein and only 4 net carbs, these tasty treats fit into any active lifestyle. Insider tip: refrigerate your Good Measure Bar for a firmer texture.
Final thoughts
As we age, it’s even more important to take control of our overall health. Small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on our future. Limiting added sugars in your diet is one step you can take. Great info, Deborah!! I’m noticing that I don’t seem to snack as often as I used to, but I do crave healthier options (most of the time) when I do need a little “fix.” Medjool dates & almonds are my current favorites.

Thanks for this info! I don’t eat sugar anymore (I call myself a “recovering sugar-holic”) and I usually use stevia or erythritol as sweeteners. I’ve been curious about Allulose though, and when I went to the website you linked to, i discovered the iQ bars- they’re keto and vegan and they sound amazing!!! I’m ordering them and I might get some as Christmas presents. Thanks again!
