There is no such thing as bad running weather if you have the right gear right? Aside from actual dangerous weather days, winter running can be fun and doable if you are prepared. There are even many health benefits to running in the cold. Here are my go-to winter running essentials that get me through the season from head to toe. This post contains affiliate links.
Winer Running Essentials
Let’s start from the bottom up as that is a practical way to layer up for an outdoor winter run.
Balega Socks blister resistant quarter socks
A blend of mohair and nylon that cover your ankles and keep you warm without adding too much bulk to your shoes. Unisex.
For days when you need a little extra traction out there, Brooks Cascadia trail shoes are a fab choice.
Designed to fit over your running shoes to give you extra traction in snow. Always great to have a pair or 2 around when you need them.
Keep your lower body warm with a good pair of fleece brushed tights. Find my 5 go to styles here.
Base layer tops
A lightweight sweat wicking base layer is essential. I prefer a more fitted base layer like this or this
Gloves
A good pair or 2 of gloves is essential to surviving outdoor winter runs. For temps above 30, a lighter weight pair of gloves like these Brooks come in a bright pink color and have a small magnet to keep them together.
For colder runs go with fleece lined gloves and maybe some hand warmers
Jackets.
Having a few jackets of varying weights will get you through almost any cold winter run. This reflective Brooks jacket is perfect for early morning runs where you want a little more visibility and weather resistance without bulk.
Face covers
This neckwarmer can be pulled up to cover your chin and nose while allowing you to warm the air you are breathing in. A must have accessory.

I still haven’t found “the glove” for winter, but your suggestions look great!
I love the idea of a magnet that keeps the pair together.
Are the gloves for colder days enough to keep you warm or do you use the hand warmers along with them?
Deborah Brooks says
It depends on the temps. MY hands always get super cold so if it is in the 20’s I usually use hand warmers. The fleece lined ones are my winter go to pair
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
All great suggestions! I rely alot on layers which is nice so I can mix and match depending on the conditions. I think I need to find a pair of fleece tights for this winter.
Deborah Brooks says
I highly recommend a pair or 2 they have been really useful this year. Both the Brooks and the Athleta pair are super warm and comfy

All of these are great for “real” winter. While we do get frosts, it warms up quickly, so even on the coldest mornings, it’s not that that bad. Thanks for sharing.

There are so many benefits to getting outside during the winter and in most cases I try (ice, high winds, and cold rain are no gos for me these days). That’s a good looking Brooks jacket! The hot pink one I had on during my Sunday run (see it on IG) is Brooks and I love that it’s not lined so it’s not too hot. I’ve had it for years, too.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes, I agree getting outside in the winter time does wonders for me. I also have that pink jacket and it is so versatile

Hadn’t thought about base layer grippers until yesterday when my Cuddl Dudds ended up staticked to my bra. It was funny more than annoying. And yes, well dressed made 9m manageable yesterday. Sometimes though in the rain? It’s just that much harder
I know the post, but if it matters for SEO, etc. Your 5 fleece lined tights is missing its link.
Deborah Brooks says
ah thanks for the heads up on the missing link π

Yes, trail shoes are a must-have in winter!
