July was not my favorite month this year. Between the heat, humidity and a disappointing race I am ready to welcome August with open arms. My word of this year is Focus and I did absolutely focus on my plan. I chose to put more time into biking and cycling this summer with less of an emphasis on running. Now that my triathlon season is over for this year, I am ready to refocus and reevaluate to set some new August goals. After all, life is about constantly re-evaluating!
Refocus Setting August Goals
Refocus on Running
I am not ready to hang up by bike for the season just yet, but I will be cycling less and running more in August. I am ready to refocus my efforts on my running and slowly get my mileage back up this month. I am ready to add back in some speed work and longer runs in order to get back into better running shape for my Ragnar race in November. July running was hard with the heat and humidity and I am hoping the worst of it has passed. Hoping to have around 60-65 miles of running for August.
Refocus on Yoga
I realized last week how much better I feel mentally and physically with yoga in my life. With the triathlon training, I just could not fit it all in and yoga was the first to go. My August goal is to make it to at least one yoga class a week this month. I’d love to get there more but trying to be realistic.
Refocus on Stretching & Post Run Rehab
I admit I’ve been terrible about stretching post run lately. My goal for August is to stretch and or foam roll after every run if only for a few minutes. Why is that so hard?
Refocus on my meal planning and smart eating
July was hard for me eating wise as well. I did not do my meal planning and prep as often as I like to. I’ve also let myself have a few too many “treats” lately. I am not even an ice cream person but yet I have found myself eating it a little too often lately. Oops! We do have some travel this month but I will be making a more concerted effort to get my eating back on schedule.
Refocus on family
I’ve so enjoyed having my daughter home this summer. I will be spending lots of time with her the next 2 weeks before I take her back to school. My son has been away at camp all summer and he comes home just about when she leaves. We then have a quick family vacation in Nantucket planned. I will be (s)mothering them all this month. My husband has also been traveling quite a bit so we need to make sure to plan some date time this month too.
Now that I wrote that all out, I am excited to take on August. How about you? Any new goals this month?

Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Such great goals for the month. Hope you enjoy your time with the kids.
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! It just goes by too fast these days
Coco says
I’m sort of in limbo right now, wondering what to ^focus^ on. I still want to do Conte’s with you! And yoga again. And coffee for real!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes to all of those things! August is busy with the college packing up and going and vacation
Mary Beth Jackson says
August will have big changes for me and I will need to shake up my exercise routine as well. I am definitely excited about this month!
Deborah Brooks says
I am excited about August too let’s both rock it!
Anna @ Pipers Run says
I need to get back to yoga as well, I’ve missed so many classes and my body misses it! We have 1 more week of vacation later in august so we’re enjoying this week fo vacation before a few weeks of work ans one last break before school.
Deborah Brooks says
I am always glad when I make it to yoga!
Elle says
I have been enjoying some ice cream too! I am planning to refocus on my food plan in August. Hope you have a terrific month.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks you too! I forgot how good ice cream was
Kimberly says
I love that you are taking August as a time to refocus and reset. I think it’s good to do that a few times a year.
The post run stretching will make a difference – trust me!
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely the perfect time to change up things for me. I know the post run stretch is necessary I just need to do it!
Coach Henness says
You are a mighty woman! Right now I can’t only manage to focus and refocus on one thing at a time. I have PT exercises for my “mommy hip” issue and that’s been a big focus for me.
Deborah Brooks says
I seem to always have a lot of balls in the air and I work better that way. Hope that hip is feeling better soon
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I am so bad at stretching before and after my runs as well. I feel like I need to keep my foam roller out in my living room so I can remember to do it.
Deborah Brooks says
I actually do that and just walk right by it thinking I will get to it later. I need to refocus on that for sure
Cyndi says
Focus…that’s what I need to do! I like all of your August goals. I can relate on the stretching. It’s so simple yet I fail to do it after my runs. I don’t eat ice cream much either but I had it twice last weekend (it was Halo Top which doesn’t even taste that great!)
Deborah Brooks says
I thought I was the only one who did not like the Halo top? I’d rather have real ice cream every once in a while that fake stuff often. That’s just me though!
Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
It’s nice that you’ll have some good quality family time in August. We definitely appreciate that more when our kids get closer to leaving the nest!
Deborah Brooks says
I know! I am not ready for them to fly off on their own quite yet
Marina @ Happy Healing says
Love these goals! I was not the best with my eating in July either, so August is a new month to stick to our goals 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely! Let’s do it!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I just commented on someone else’s blog how summer really throws off our routines. By August, I’m ready to settle down a bit and get back on track. But this summer has been so much fun–I have to say I’ve really enjoyed myself. Maybe a little too much.
Deborah Brooks says
I am really ready to get back to my regular routine. I usually can’t get enough of summer but this one feels different. Glad you are out there finding new ways to have fun
Emily @ Pizza & Pull-ups says
Great goals for the month! Hope you get some good time in with your kiddos. I always feel like I am at my best with regular yoga as well, it definitely leaves me feeling calm and relaxed.
Deborah Brooks says
I feel the same and now I just need to make sure I keep yoga in the mix
Ernn says
Love your goals! August is a great month to refocus – I think we really tend to let loose during June and July 😉
Enjoy your time with your kiddos – I am a teacher and our students start next Wednesday (super early right?!).
My main goals for August are to stop putting so much pressure on myself and to not stress about things I can’t control – easier said than done right?
I’d also like to do more stretching and recovery to stay injury-free running 🙂
Have a great day!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes that sure is easier said than done! you all do start school super early. This is the first year that we are starting before labor day so that is a big change for us
Kimberly Hatting says
I know what you mean about wanting to smother your kids while they’re still at home. Our son goes back to school on the 15th (I think)….at least this year, he’ll only be an hour away so we’ll hopefully get to see him more often.
I need to be treating my walking more as a sport and not just “cardio conditioning.” My hammies & quads need some TLC for all they work they’re doing…the foam rolling and stretching has been pretty minimal…
Deborah Brooks says
I bet you are working all sorts of different muscles and will be a better runner from it. I am happy for you that your son will be closer. It’s hard to let them go
Chaitali says
Sounds like great plans for August! It’s definitely hard to fit everything in and yoga tends to be the first thing dropped for me as well.
Deborah Brooks says
It sure does and I plan to make it more of a priority
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am definitely of letting too many treats creep in. There’s nothing wrong with treats, but you have to know when to fold up!
I find it so hard to fit everything in with just running — just thinking about making that happen with swimming & biking, too, would just make my head explode!
Deborah Brooks says
It is hard to fit everything in and I am kind of ready for a break. The sweets ugh so good
Abbey Sharp says
Welcome to August! Like always, my goals are to take care of my health and spend time with friends and family!
Deborah Brooks says
Always good ones!
Rachel says
My first thing to go was yoga, too. Once my kids go back to school I’m going to make a very solid effort to get back into it.
Deborah Brooks says
Funny how so many people say that about yoga and then we are all so glad to find it again
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
These sound like great goals! My goal for August is to focus on not putting so much pressure on myself to do all the things.
Deborah Brooks says
That is always so hard for me!
Jenn says
So glad that you are looking forward to August! I had lots of great intentions for July, but…. well, you know what they say about good intentions. :/
I hope to get in some more bike time and any gym time this month. Fingers crossed.
Deborah Brooks says
Yup right there with you!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
I need to get back to smart eating. Pregnant or not!!
Deborah Brooks says
As someone who gained 60 pounds when pregnant I am not one to comment!
Jessica @ I Am Teacher Fit says
Yoga is always the first to go for me too. Sometimes it’s just impossible to get everything in the way we’d like to. I hope you have much success in August!
Deborah Brooks says
It really is impossible to fit it all in
Lindsay @ Fit & Awesome says
Great goals and nice job refocusing! It’s amazing how fast summer has flown by. I have been off for the past 6 weeks on maternity leave with my daughter and know I’m going to miss this time so much.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh it just goes by so fast doesn’t it? I can’t believe my baby is 17 years old
Esther says
I LOVE this post! I feel like summer was a little too crazy and I got so off track!
I love the goal of weekly yoga and more stretching, rolling! I used to be SO good about this but have slacked off and I can tell! I may need to borrow some of your goals for myself too 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Please do! Hope we both get some more stretching in
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
My goals are simple… get through surgery and try not to lose too much muscle. I’m soooooo dreading this.
Deborah Brooks says
I know it’s scary! You are in such good shape going into it which will certainly help
Natalie says
As if I read MY goals for this month. I definitely need to focus more on running (not sure how.. temperatures are unbelievably high here) and my family. Love this goals setting. I need to start doing this. It keeps you focused, right?!
Deborah Brooks says
It does keep me focused for sure to set goals. The summer heat has been killing me as well. I am hoping for some cooler mornings
Annmarie says
Great goals! Mine is to get back to regular running 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I hope you do! Feel good friend
Jessica @Small Bites by Jessica says
Sounds like some great goals! Perfect time to re-evaluate and get after it!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks I think so too!
Toni says
Those are all awesome goals! I just want to follow my half training plan as well as possible. I am back to work full time after the summer off which is making finding time challenging.
Deborah Brooks says
It is always a hard transition back after summer
Carmy @ carmyy.com says
Funny how yoga, perfect for mind x body, is always the first to go? I’m the same. I need to carve out time specifically for it or I miss it.
Deborah Brooks says
It is something I love but don’t put enough of a priority on
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I have no doubt that you will make the most of time with your family this month. Do you and your daughter have any special activities planned together before she returns to school?
Deborah Brooks says
Well…lots of packing and shopping 🙂
Akaleistar says
July was not a great month for me either, so I’m all for refocusing in August!
Deborah Brooks says
Let’s do it!
