It might not quite feel like fall yet but I hear it’s coming soon. October and November are my absolute favorite months of the year for running. The cool, crisp morning air and the changing of the leaves are what get me out the door. The heat and humidity slowly fade and running becomes less of a struggle. Fall is also my favorite time to participate in races. So what’s on my fall racing plan this year?
My Fall Racing Plan
I am pretty excited about my fall racing plan for this year. I’ve 3 new races on the calendar and one old favorite. Here’s what’s on tap so far.
Rock Creek Relay
New to me this year is the Rock Creek Relay. This one day relay race takes part in Rock Creek Park in DC and Maryland. As part of a 3 person relay team, we will leap frog each other and run a total of approximately 28 miles. Each runner will run twice. There is something very different about competing as part of a team vs running a race on your own. This will be great practice for me and for the rest of my crew for our Ragnar relay. September 30th.
Napa Valley Ragnar
After our Napa race was cancelled last year due to the California fires, our team is back to take on this 200 mile relay from San Francisco to Napa Valley. I just love Ragnar races and this race course should be full of epic views and fun times with girlfriends. There may even be some wine tasting thrown in. November 2 and 3rd.
Philadelphia Half
It’s been a few years since I have done a half marathon and I am excited to get back to them. My husband is from Philly and I’ve always wanted to do a race there. We have an epic weekend in the planning with lots of MRTT mommas attending. Now I just need to get my achilles injury dealt with so I an start training. November 17th.
Bethesda Turkey Day 10K
Kind of a ritual on Thanksgiving Day for me for the last few years. Somehow getting up early on Thanksgiving and exhausting yourself before cooking for the whole family is always one of the highlights of the day. We always have a big group of MRTT runners who participate together. November 22nd.
Now if I could just get a little fall weather to train with! Will I see you at any of these races? What’s on your fall racing plan?

I’ve never done a relay race but I think they could be a lot of fun! Turkey Trots are so much fun. The one in my hometown is a family tradition and we go to a friends for a party after so I’m excited for that one.
If our schedules work out, we should meet when you’re in Philly!
Deborah Brooks says
Relay races are so much fun and a whole different feel to them as a team. Yes I hope I can get my training in gear and make it to Philly
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
It is actually fall like today here! But it won’t stick around too long.
I always start my Thanksgiving with a turkey trot, too. And I host. It helps to run off that stress first!
I’ve only ever done one relay race, and that was a half. I love Fall racing too!
Deborah Brooks says
Starting Thanksgiving off with a race or run is a huge stress reliever for sure. It’s quickly approaching!

There’s a race the weekend before Thanksgiving, and I may consider the 5k. It’s fun to do runs before Thanksgiving so I can just relax that morning.

I love doing relay races and absolutely loved when I did the Baltimore marathon as a relay last year. I would love to find more of them to do but the problem is trying to get enough people whose schedules all align!
Have fun at your fall races!
Deborah Brooks says
It is hard to find a group of people who can all do the same race but they are a blast
Coco says
I’m hope to join you in Philly!
Deborah Brooks says
I hope I can get my running back up to be able to do it!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
