Summer running got you down? I’ve got the perfect way to stay cool this summer while getting your miles in. While beer runs are all the rage, and hey there is nothing wrong with them, they may not be practical for day time running. Enter the Iced Tea Run. This may be the answer to your summer heat and humidity problems.
How to host an iced tea run
Summer heat and humidity are not my friend. I’ve really been struggling to get my regular mileage in the past few weeks. Recently, on a particularly hot DC day, we devised a plan to get our mid week miles in and stay cool. We mapped out a route that would have us hit a coffee shop at about every mile for each of our 3 miles planned for that day. That way we could cool off with iced tea or lemonade about every 10 minutes. It’s also nice to have some air conditioning and access to a bathroom.
Once you figure out how many miles you have on your schedule, simply plan out your route adding in a few stops along the way. Coffee shops are my favorite places to stop but a bagel shop or even a fast food place will do.
With temps in the high 80’s at the start, we picked a perfect day for this fun tradition. We headed out on our adventure and quest to stay cool with our first stop after one mile at Café Kindred for an iced tea lemonade combination.
We headed back out to kick some asphalt on our way to our second stop at Panera Bread. Knowing that we only had about a mile to go before we could cool off again gave us the extra momentum we needed. Panera has a huge selection of iced tea drinks.
With one more stop to go, and temps heating up, we set out to our third and final stop. Northside Social is one of our regular post run hangouts and perfect place to end up.
Who needs beer runs when you can have iced tea runs? For me summertime, is the perfect time for less structured and more fun runs. Organizing an iced tea run on a hot day is my ideal way to make it through the summer heat and humidity. You may even make some new friends along the way.

Definitely sounds like a fun idea! It would be a bit of a challenge here, not sure how I’d route that (most of our preferred running routes are rail trails, so no shops along the way).
One group has been doing ice cream run every other week. So that could be your next idea. 🙂
Great idea, Deborah!

Love this idea! I would have to opt for the sugar-free iced tea, but this sounds like a fun idea to do with friends.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes all of the places we stopped had lots of choices of iced teas. I am a sugar free iced tea girl as well. I did add a splash of lemonade to one of mine though 🙂

This is such a great idea! In my area, we’d have to do a “wagon wheel” shaped route and keep looping back downtown, but it would still be a fun adventure.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s ok it would be fun! Hope you all have a chance to try it sometime

Stop it! That’s flat out genius!
I wonder if I could make this happen with ice cream shops.
Deborah Brooks says
Well that sounds like a great plan! go for it

ICed tea > beer any day for me. I think I might even be team lemonade, but either would work
