This time of year is so crazy! I feel like this week wast the longest week and also the shortest week. Anyone else feel like this time of the year? This weekly wrap is also filled with lots of ups and downs. Let’s get right to it shall we?!
Weekly Wrap Ups and Downs
Sunday-Girls on the run 5K
Our season ending race was just fantastic. Seeing all the girls with huge smiles on their faces as they crossed the finish line is just priceless.
Monday-45 min elliptical + 60 min strength training
Tuesday- 6 mile run
Calves and shins feeling a little sore after my run. Ugh.
Wednesday- 30 min elliptical + 90 min kickboxing and strength
Thursday- 3 mile run
Did a shorter run today to see how the shins and claves were feeling. Rolled, iced and massaged but alas they were still sore. Starting to panic a bit.
Friday- rest day
One of my besties and I plan a yearly spa day each December. If you are going to have a rest day, might as well do it up right. Don’t you think? We had a lovely day of lunch, tea, massages and facials. Aah very relaxing.
Saturday- rest day
After much debate and back and forth, I decided to bail on my Jingle on The Way 15K today and take a DNS. I have been feeling soreness in my shins after my last few runs and did not think it was a good idea. UGH! I am having serious FOMO this morning as I see all the photos from the race. Thankfully, I am feeling much better after a few days off. I am going to write more about this later in the week. Definitely a week of ups and downs running wise.
On the upside, it’s time for the Instagram #thebestnine. I couldn’t wait so I went ahead and did mine. You can do yours here

I hope a few days off will help your shins to feel better! It really is such a busy time of year. I feel like the weeks leading up to Christmas drag on but also fly by at the same time because there is so much to do.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes me too I am kind of bummed about missing the race though
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I’m sorry your calves and shins have been bothering you. Is it shin splints do you think?
Deborah Brooks says
I think it is the soleus in the calf area that is just having some over use issues. It feels a lot better today I just have to take it easy this week
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
I’m so glad the Girls on the Run 5k went well! Your rest day for this week sounds amazing. Talk about a perfect rest day! I hope your shins feel better soon! One thing I do is a deep tissue massage (sounds so fancy but it’s not lol). Using your thumbs, find the muscle on the outside of your shin and flex your foot up and down on while moving your thumbs into it. I hope that makes sense.
Deborah Brooks says
I do try to do that same massage and it does help. I think I just over did it the last few weeks thanks
Wendy says
I just did my best nine! It was interesting to see what photos made the cut.
I had that shin thing a while ago. Then it went away. I have no idea what caused it!
Deborah Brooks says
super bad timing on the shins but thankfully they are feeling so better already. The IG nine is fun isn’t it?
Akaleistar says
A yearly spa day sounds like such a fun tradition 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
OH it sure is!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
My husband has a major cold which I am trying hard not to catch. We don’t usually pass them back and forth, but the downside is I’m not getting much sleep, either, due to the coughing.
Hosted a fun potluck last night anyway. A good time was had by all, despite the “less than an inch” which turned into 3 icy, messy inches.
Glad to hear your leg feel better; sorry about the DNS — always a difficult decision.
Deborah Brooks says
You have to go sleep in another room! It’s the worst when they are sick. A pot luck is always fun. Yes not an easy decision but I think the right one
Kim G says
I hope that a few days off from running will do the trick! Sometimes our bodies just need a little TLC. I think you made the right call on the DNS for the race – no need to risk injury!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks I think I did too but boy did I have FOMO
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I love Girls on the Run! I used to be a coach when I was a teacher. Such a great organization! A spa day sounds exactly like what I need. How fun!
Deborah Brooks says
it’s a great organization. We love it when the teachers volunteer to help out too
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
That is a great way to spend a rest day at the Spa. Sorry to hear that you were not feeling in for the 15k. Better to take that extra rest day than aggravating something even more.
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely true but still disappointing
Sara says
I’m glad that you were smart enough to sit that race out instead of pushing and ended up with an injury. That’s always a tough decision to make.
How fun was the GOTR race?! Looks like a great time!!
Deborah Brooks says
GOTR was a blast thanks! Yes sitting out is never easy
Jessica says
I always love Instagram best nine too! Can’t wait to do mine.
Good for you for listening to your body. Though the FOMO is real right now, you won’t regret your choice in the long run!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I sure hope so
Kimberly Hatting says
My week certainly had some ups (regarding running and fitness), though the temps were way down ;-( I want my summer back!
Deborah Brooks says
You do love your summer temps!
Coco says
I’m so sorry you had to DNS but I’m sure it was the right decision. I need to take care of my PF for real now ….
Deborah Brooks says
Hope it did not flare up too much today. I don’t know how you run so well on it.
HoHo Runs says
I’m sorry to hear about your shins! I know the decision to DNS is a tough call (I had horrible Vegas FOMO) but it is the right decision. Congrats on a successful Girls On The Run season. I know you were proud of your group. Thanks for linking!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes that FOMO is a tough one!
Karen Bayne says
omg, your #9 are so fun!! Captured some great moments!
I hate that you missed your Jingle run, it is better than ending up injured, but always hard to swallow when you can’t the body to cooperate.
Your GOTR group is great 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Very hard indeed 🙁
Lesley says
I did DNS’d a few years ago, and I was so cranky when I made the decision. It was for the best though, because I knew I’d hurt myself more than I already was.
Deborah Brooks says
exactly! but not always easy to do
Chaitali says
I’m glad your shins are feeling better! It’s hard to skip a race, especially when friends are doing it, but it sounds like it was the right decision.
Deborah Brooks says
It is always a hard decision for sure thanks though
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Never fun to miss a race, but always smart to listen to your body. Hope the shin/calf thing resolves itself quickly.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s feeling better already after a few days off thanks
Teresa says
I feel your pain, literally and figuratively, regarding the shin pain. I’ve been feeling some soreness in my left shin after my runs. It never bothers me while I’m running and doesn’t hurt like shin splints do ..but it’s there …reminding me that at any moment it could turn into something major and derail me!! I’m trying not to dwell on it. Hope yours is all better soon!
