Wow it’s already the end of December and thus time to Runfess with Marcia. This End of the year Runfessions is not how I had hoped my year would wrap up. But, life rarely goes according to plan. That’s what keeps things interesting right?
End Of the Year Runfessions
I Runfess...I am not ending the year where I had hoped to with my running. My injury in late October really threw me for a curve and pretty much derailed many of my race plans for the end of the year and perhaps the beginning of 2020 as well. Part of me knows that injuries come with long term running “careers” (for lack of a better word) and that eventually we all battle them at some point or another. Part of me is just really annoyed and upset that I had to miss so many races.
I Runfess...I am making lots of progress with my return to running. I am up to 3:1 intervals. I did not have any pain while on my last run and just a little lingering soreness the next day. That is progress for sure albeit a little slower than I would like it to be. I really have no idea how long it will take me to get back to “regular” running with my group. Although I am back to starting with them, I pretty much lose them after 3 minutes.
I Runfess…I am not sure what to do about the Rock N Roll half marathon in New Orleans on February 9th. We have a group of about 10 of us going down to Nola with our husbands for the weekend. I am thinking about running the 10K instead which is the same day but in a different start location. Part of me (the crazy part?) is thinking of just trying to get through the half using intervals. I have another 6 weeks or so to figure it out so we shall see.
Catrina says
Sounds like a tough decision with the Rock’N’Roll half-marathon / 10k in New Orleans. I understand the temptation of going for the half-marathon with using intervals. I would set myself a cut-off date in 3 weeks and then make a final decision.
One thing for sure: you’re going to have FUN!
Deborah Brooks says
That is good advice! I will see how the next few weeks go for me. Thanks for the support as always
Darlene says
I’m with you on running. But slow running is better then no running.
I have to decide if I do the 10k rather than the half in Bermuda in Feb.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes sad to read we are in the same situation. Happy to chat about it together and see what we can come up with
Wendy says
I totally get it! I don’t run with Steph much any more because I’m using the intervals. I keep trying to get rid of them but for long distances, I don’t seem to have a choice. My body likes the little walk break. We’ll see how the year progresses. Hang in there. I bet you could do the half with intervals. But it’s really up to how you feel about just finishing vs your finish time.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I will see how the next few weeks goes. My finish time is out the window anyway so it’s just a matter of finishing and not doing any damage along the way.
Kimberly Hatting says
I had forgotten about NOLA….that IS a dilemma. Hopefully, your healing will continue well, and that 13.1 will still be a possibility with the interval training you’ve been doing. Are any of your gals doing he 10K, that you could hang with for that?
Deborah Brooks says
No everyone else is doing the half and finding out that it is at a different start place is kind of a bummer. I am not sure what I will do yet. Need to see how the next few weeks play out
Coco says
I’m sorry you’re still struggling. Tough call on New Orleans. I guess the question is whether pushing through the Half is worth risking an even longer recovery. On the other hand, 6 weeks is a while away and you really could feel 100% by then. Fingers crossed!
Deborah Brooks says
I know it’s a dilemma! I may just make a last minute decision which seems easy to do w RnR races.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Tough call on Nola! I’d give yourself a couple more weeks and see how you feel – as someone who’s pushed it through one too many half marathons with an injury, I’ll just say it might be better to go short and be able to enjoy the weekend.
Deborah Brooks says
I know it’s a dilemma!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Hang in there! It sounds like you’re doing well. Injuries happen to all of us and that’s why it’s so important to talk about them.
Deborah Brooks says
I know we all do go through this from time to time. I will bounce back! thanks
Cari says
Yay no pain!
I feel you – literally.
I’ll probably punt on Fort Lauderdale, but I’m not giving up Bermuda. Even if I just do the lighthouse walk, it will be worth it for the fun weekend. I really, really hope to be back running th ough.
Deborah Brooks says
I know seems like so many of us are dealing w injuries right now! I would definitely still go to Bermuda 🙂
Cari says
I figure even injured or on the comeback, Bermuda > NYC in February
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely!
Kim G says
I am glad that you’re back to running and that it’s going well. When is the deadline to switch from the half to the 10K? If to have some time to decided, hopefully you can run for maybe 2-3 more weeks and then you’ll know how your body feels and if you can still do the half.
Deborah Brooks says
The great thing about RnR races is that I can basically switch at the expo so I will wait at least a few weeks to see how it’s going.
Marcia says
I think you’ve got some time to figure out your plan for RnRNOLA. The 10k will be fun too but who knows? You may be able to pull off the half with intervals by then. Injuries definitely remind us how difficult running is, and how lucky we are to be able to do it. Thanks for linking up!
Deborah Brooks says
I know running injuries are so tough and we are so lucky when our bodies cooperate with what we’d always like them to do
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I have done all my halfs doing intervals. So I don’t think that’s crazy — unless, of course, it’s just too long a distance too soon. Only you know. And only you know what you want out of the race. NOLA is so fun, you’ll have a good time no matter what!
Since I’m a slower runner, I rarely get to run with anyone in my group, so I feel your pain.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I will most certainly still have to do intervals which I am totally fine with. I will just have to wait a few more weeks to see if the distance is feasible
Liz Dexter says
I’d see how you go with that half – you may well feel strong enough nearer the time. And I’m glad you are making positive progress with it.
I runfess I got very excited when I equalled Last Year Me’s mileage yesterday, even though that literally means so very little really!!
Deborah Brooks says
It’s all relative and you should be proud of your yearly mileage. Mine was not what I really expected either but it’s all good right?
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I hope it works out so you can run the Rock ‘N’ Roll Half in New Orleans. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Deb me too!
Jenn says
<3 I totally get it. I was supposed to run a 10K + 5K challenge the week after my boot comes off (won't be ready to run, nor will I be able to drive to said race). Then another challenge in March, followed by a 15K. I am hopeful that I will be ready to take on a 5K in early April, even if it means a power walk through the 3.1 miles. Time will tell.
I would probably head to RNR, see how I'm feeling and go from there. I am not opposed at all to interval running though.
Sending you the best in making your decision.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Jenn I know you will be in the same situation. We will both get back there eventually!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’m sorry to hear about your injury setback…I’m glad that you’re coming back around, though it does take time to work your way back. Hopefully, you’ll be ready to run in NOLA!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Janelle I sure hope so!
