Wow this month has felt so long! It’s that time again. Time for the September Runfessions with Marcia where we bare all about running and fitness. So let’s get right to it. I have a lot to Runfess.
September Runfessions
I Runfess…
Here it goes-I honestly hated pretty much every run I ran this July and August. The heat and humidity really hit me so hard this year. I felt so defeated for months both physically and mentally. I got so discouraged having to take so many walk breaks. I was exhausted and frustrated after almost every run. In all sincerity, I thought about giving up running all together a few times. But really, what in the world would I do with myself? Thank goodness I had my Runner girl gang and lots of iced tea and slurpee runs to pull me through. I am going to assume it was a two month case of heat exhaustion.
I Runfess..
On a more positive note, the last 3 weeks have gone much better. The slightly cooler temps seem to have made a huge difference. The walk breaks have ended and I am starting to build back my base. I think I have gotten my mojo back and I am ready to work on my running again. I have some big races on my schedule for winter and spring. Those miles are not going to run themselves are they? Now if we could just get mother nature to bring in actual fall temps, that would be great.
So tell me running friends, did you ever have a significant period of time where you really just disliked running? How did you snap out of it? Thanks for letting me get that off of my chest. I feel better after this September Runfessions.
Wendy says
I feel you on the summer running! I did plenty of whining about it. It’s nice to run in the cooler temps and actually feel like a runner again!
Deborah Brooks says
I am starting to feel much better too-bring on the cooler temps for both of us
Marcia says
Mmmmmhmmm I am guilty as charged with all the walk breaks. I can’t imagine what training for a marathon would’ve been like through this ridiculously humid summer. A Slurpee after a hot run is pretty much the best thing ever. Thanks for runfessing!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am so glad that I did not sign up for a fall race. I hate to feel like running is a chore. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel
Kim G says
I can totally relate. For me, summer running is the hardest and it honestly sucks all the fun out of running for me. It’s not so much the heat but the humidity that really kills me.
The cooler weather has really been great and it’s always a good jump start to getting your running mojo back!
Deborah Brooks says
I have been so impressed by how well you did this summer! I am so glad that I did not sign up for anything in the fall
Chaitali says
That’s great news that the last couple weeks have felt better with running! We all have ups and downs. Trying out new routes and making run dates with friends generally help pull me out of a running funk. Or getting a good audio book to listen to while running 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Yes all of those definitely help!
Debbie says
Summer running is so hard, especially in the humidity! I always feel so refreshed when the weather finally cools off!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes same here! Anxiously waiting…
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I never enjoy running in heat & humidity. I was blessed with both last summer while training for my longest race. This summer would’ve been so much better.
Sometimes I do think the time I devote to running is silly, especially when I’m not training for anything, but I still have a lot of states to do, and while I know that it’s probably going to be on the back burner for a while, I hope to someday finish that up.
I don’t want to have to start over from scratch. That’s what keeps me running. That plus know how good I’ll feel AFTER I run. Using the treadmill sometimes actually does help me, too.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am always happy after a run and do feel accomplished. I hated the actual running this summer so many times. However, I am a creature of habit and love to stay on my schedule with run days. Bring on fall!
Christine says
I struggled all summer, too. The temps are finally dropping in Houston, so I actually have been enjoying short runs. I can’t wait for a little more fall.
Deborah Brooks says
Right there with you bring on cooler temps!
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
Summer running is hard every year and I completely get why you would feel like giving up running. I felt that way a bit too, especially after taking a break. Even though the temperatures haven’t cooled down quite yet having low humidity has been amazing in September!
Deborah Brooks says
The humidity drop has made it a little better even though the temps are still high
Madhusree Basu says
Heat and humidity take a toll and I’m so sorry to hear that you have been hit so hard this year. Here it starts from mid of Feb with May and June being the killer…August is comparatively cooler…
Deborah Brooks says
It’s a struggle for sure!
HoHo Runs says
I’m waiting for that break in the weather so I can feel good about my running again. We are STILL having record heat (still 100 every.darn.day). I’ve been super whiny.
Deborah Brooks says
I have been so whiny that I am surprised my running group still lets me come along!
Farrah says
This month definitely feels like it’s been a long one! I’m glad your last few weeks have been better! Summer running in all that heat is a rough time!
Deborah Brooks says
It really is a challenge!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Summer running will definitely make you question your relationship with running! And this summer was hard! I’m glad you’re getting your mojo back 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks it has been a struggle around here and I am tired of whining about it!
Kimberly Hatting says
So sorry the running has been rough in recent months. You do have some tough heat and humidity to battle, that would make it less than desirable for a lot of people. I think I don’t mind the heat (much) because the past two winters have been so dreadful for me. I have gotten outside (and I have made do with Milly on occasion), but I really don’t like the extreme cold…any heat feels better to me LOL Glad things have been going better 😉 It’s great you have such an incredible support system with all your running friends!
Deborah Brooks says
It was a rough summer but I see the light at the end of the tunnel!
The Accidental Marathoner says
Glad to hear you are getting your mojo back. This summer’s heat and humidity were no joke! Fall is my favorite season, so I am really looking forward to some drier, cooler weather. Of course it is pouring as I write this…
Deborah Brooks says
Fall is my favorite season as well! Bring it on
Cari says
I’m glad I was training this summer – otherwise there were many days I would not have gotten out there. I haven’t run a fall half before, but that will have to change next year to keep me out there. I have run a December 15K twice, but that was short/late en ough to fall cram
Deborah Brooks says
Fall half races are hard to train for around here with the heat. Kind of glad mine are not for a few months!
