Holiday season and that madness that accompanies it are upon us. Even the most dedicated fitness fanatic can struggle to fit it all in during this season. Check out my quick tips to maintain your health and wellness through the holiday season and beyond.
Quick Tips to Maintain your health & wellness through the holiday season
Plan meals ahead
Between family and work obligations, parties and events, it can be challenging to stay on track with eating well. While I firmly believe that what you eat between Thanksgiving and New Years Day is not as important as what you eat between New Years and Thanksgiving. At the same time, the holiday season does not have to derail your eating and exercise habits.
Planning some meals ahead for days that you do not have obligations definitely helps. Making meals like soups, casseroles and more soup that you can double up on and freeze are a huge help on a busy day.

Learn to say no
Not the easiest thing to do! It is common to feel all the pressure to do all the things during the holiday season. There are so many requests for volunteers, donations and events. It helps to sit down and figure out just how much time you are able to comfortably donate without over extending yourself. Again, not easy to do but so worth it. It is okay to say, “no” sometimes.
Schedule some me time
Scheduling and keeping up with your exercise and me time during this stressful time, is key. Plan a workout or a walk with a friend, sign up for a yoga class at your favorite studio, head out for a run with your favorite podcast.
Power shop

Will some of your family be joining you for a Turkey Trot?

Thanks for the tips.
Our holidays are pretty low key.
I’m looking forward to the annual turkey trot.
Deborah Brooks says
That is a great way to do the holidays!

Great tips! The holidays can be challenging. I tend to be a procrastinator when it comes to holiday prep, then run around like crazy mid-December. I plan to not do that this year!
Deborah Brooks says
they sure can be challenging!

I LOVE this- “what you eat between Thanksgiving and New Years Day is not as important as what you eat between New Years and Thanksgiving.” I know the whole point of this post is to keep ourselves healthy and on track, but it’s also good to remember it’s okay to have some treats as well.
Your tips are great. I remember one year my husband and I ran the Disney marathon (this was over 20 years ago.) It was early in January, and that REALLY kept us on track during the holidays!
I’m looking forward to your holiday gift guide!!!

It is ok to enjoy the foods you love without feeling guilty. I hope you have a fantastic holiday with your family

I’m grateful for my “early morning” lifestyle because it enables getting my fitness stuff out of the way first thing each day. That not only keeps me active & fit, but it gives me a lot more flexibility checking other holiday stuff off my list throughout the day. And, let’s not forget the stress relief!
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely that is a great point!

This has already been such a busy fall and the holidays are going to make it even busier! As long as I can run a few days a week and cook most of my meals I feel like I can stay on track pretty well. But like you said, this is only a short time period out of the whole year!
Deborah Brooks says
yes, it is already so hectic for me too!

It can be so hard to keep up with everything this time of year! It definitely helps to keep up with workouts and cook meals at home when you can.
Deborah Brooks says
yes, I agree and keeping up workouts always helps

I need to get back on prepping meals this time of year. Now that band is coming to a close and my “busy” season is done, I think it might be easier.
I also want to get lost this season. I don’t know if it will happen, but I would love it.

Prepping meals always helps me!
Kimberly Hatting says
Being on my own, I’ve been making a lot of “double-size” meals and then freezing most of the leftovers. It’s a huge time saver having a nice selection of favorites already prepped & (almost) table-ready when I have a spontaneous dinner guest 😉
Deborah Brooks says
smart idea!
Debbie says
I agree, scheduling “me” time is really important in helping to keep the stress level down. I need to get better at meal prep, though…
Deborah Brooks says
meal prep and planning definitely helps me!
Jenn says
Love all of these!
Incidentally, did Brooks unveil a thanksgiving shirt this year?
