Despite still being “safely at home” most of the time, this past month seemed to fly by quickly. Between socially distant graduations, Father’s Day celebrations and outdoor happy hours with friends life is starting to get busier again. That does not mean that I don’t have a few Runfessions to share. June 2020 is another month to remember. Thanks to Marcia for hosting!
June 2020 Runfessions
I Runfess,,. i was naively holding out hope that my Wine Glass Half Marathon in October would go ahead. We had a group of 6 that was planning to make the trip up to Corning. Alas, we got the dreaded email yesterday that it too would be a virtual race. Womp Womp maybe next year. I have one more in November in Philly but I am not optimistic.
I Runfess…My excitement for all the virtual races is waning. That has not stopped me from signing up for a few more in July though. One of them is the Quad City Times Bix 7 which Kim was so excited about that I jump on board to “run with her”, The 7 mile distance is different and will keep me training through the July heat. I think she has roped encouraged a few others to join in as well. I have another fun and different virtual race that has me conquering Hadrian’s Wall. I will be telling you more about that soon.
I Runfess…The hubs have cancelled our Nantucket trip for the second time. As much as I would love to get away for a few days alone with my husband, the new increasing numbers are scaring me. I just don’t think I would be able to relax especially on the airplane.Heck, I still get anxious at the grocery store! I am looking around to see if I can find somewhere in driving distance that I would be comfortable going. I could definitely use a change of scenery for a few days.

I was looking at the COVID charts yesterday and I was surprised so see the curve in the US going back up. I think you made a wise decision to stay home for now.
I have a marathon that I’m doing with a group of 16 people. It is supposed to happen in early September. The organisers still haven’t cancelled which is annoying, because it’s quite clear that it is not happening.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am still kind of nervous with the openings!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I wouldn’t be comfortable traveling yet either. While some areas have been able to keep numbers low, I feel like that could change at any moment. (By the time we see the increase that will already mean many more people could have been exposed). I also got a little tired of virtual races. Not sure yet if Ill do any more this summer.
Deborah Brooks says
I hear you on both!
Wendy says
Our numbers are still dropping, thankfully, but I’m sure that’s not going to last. I’m cautious when I’m out but I still won’t go to the grocery store. We order online and pick up our groceries curbside. At work, my site it considered ‘non-COVID’ meaning no one with symptoms, but they do somehow sneak in…our schedules continue to open up more. We’re wearing all the PPE. It’s a little nerve-wracking.
And I agree with you about the virtual races. The mileage challenges, I like those, tho.
Deborah Brooks says
I am sure it is nerve wracking and stressful!
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Yes. Sick of virtuals. Want the real thing.
So sad about Wineglass.
I wonder if I will race in 2020. Fingers crossed for NH in Oct.
I am just boating on the lake. With all the restrictions it’s not the same. But it’s better than nothing.
Deborah Brooks says
Boating on the lake sounds pretty good!
Coco says
June did seem to go by faster than May. I can’t believe July 4th is next weekend!
I’m trying to figure out if there’s anyplace we could go, but my husband is content to stay here. I get stuck on the meals — we love to eat out on vacation and aren’t even eating out here, where we “know” the restaurants, so what would we do?
Deborah Brooks says
Yes we are still trying to figure out something will let you know. The eating out is a challenge for sure
meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I have not run any virtual races this year because I had no desire, but as the year winds down and more races are becoming virtual, maybe I’ll do one just so I have a “race” on my calendar….lol.
If we do any “vacationing” this year, I think it will be something local. I’m really going to miss my Florida trip!
Deborah Brooks says
I guess it would be fun to have one virtual medal to remember this crazy time!
Maureen says
I’m not optimistic about my half in October in Philly either. It was supposed to be end of March but got postponed until October. It sucks because I understand why races are cancelling but it was something to look forward too.
My family and all of my mom’s siblings, their kids and my grandparents have had a house booked in Virginia Beach for over a year now and we leave 2 weeks from today. I think a big reason is aside from the grocery store we don’t need to leave the house, plus we won’t be in a crowded hotel or condos you can rent so my grandparents don’t have to be exposed to others. Maybe you could do something like that!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes we are looking for a house something like that. I am sure you all will have fun.I was hoping to do a race in Philly in Nov but who knows!
Kim G says
I’m also doing the Quad City Times Bix 7 – seems like a lot of us are doing that virtual race which will make it fun!
I am registered for the LoveRun Half Marathon in Philly in October. Although it hasn’t been officially cancelled, I don’t have high hopes that it will happen, especially with it being in such a big city.
Deborah Brooks says
Yeah glad to hear that you are doing the Quad city as well. I guess I better start training 🙂 I was hoping to do a race in Philly in Nov but not getting my hopes up
Kimberly Hatting says
You could come to Iowa & check out how the corn is growing! Our COVID cases have been low 🙂 It May take you a couple days to drive here, though . So excited to do the Bix with you!!!!
Deborah Brooks says
ha well that does sound exciting!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
OMG,I so want to go somewhere. Anywhere. My last vacay (which was only 5 days was 2/19. But no, I’ll pass on the plane. I keep trying to interest my husband in a small RV. Actually, I started that campaign last summer. No dice.
I have only done a couple of virtual races. and while even those I didn’t really care that much about, still, it’s something a little bit different. I may have another one coming up in Sept. It’s a race I’ve wanted to do a long time, one that a friend does every year, and of course a the beginning of this year we thought this would be the year. Woman plans, Gods laugh, eh?
Deborah Brooks says
Ha I think we would kill each other in an RV!
Marcia says
It seems like we’re getting a second wave of race cancellations that will put an end to fall racing as we know it. At this point I’ve resigned myself to accepting the fact that IRL races are probably over for 2020.
We are flying to take Thing 1 to school in August. I don’t feel great about it, but I’m not wigging out about it either. We’ll be our cautous selves and hope for the best.
Deborah Brooks says
yes I think so too. We will also be taking my son back to school mid August.
Michelle D. says
Sorry to hear about your Nantucket trip but I totally get it. The thought of getting on a plane right now just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s too bad it isn’t in driving distance cause our numbers here in MA are looking pretty good.
I’ve still got a virtual race I haven’t completed yet – I’ve just lost steam for them. It’s crazy to think there could be no more in-person races this year.
Deborah Brooks says
Loses steam myself for the virtual races 🙂
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Oh no, bummer about having to cancel your trip to Nantucket again, but I’m with you, I wouldn’t be comfortable on a plane. I’m going to visit my mom in mid-July to take her to some doctor’s appointments. We plan to go down to the beach house in mid-August for several days and then again in September for a couple of weeks. The nice thing about that is it’s just the two of us and we aren’t around other people.
Deborah Brooks says
We are trying to find out if there is somewhere we can go and feel safe
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
I runfess that although I know good and well that no in person races will happen this year, it does help me in some way to “pretend” that the races will go on. We’re debating our options for vacation. I go back and forth, overall I am comfortable with flying, and our only “social” activities would be going to the grocery store and getting takeout, exactly what we do at home. I think my main hesitation is that I can see numbers going up and the beaches being closed or something like that.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I have those same concerns. WE are not sure what to do!
Chaitali says
Yeah, I’m a bit scared of the increasing numbers too and nervous about traveling. We decided on a cabin in Virginia for a change of scenery. It’s in driving distance and entry is a passcode they email you for the lock, so it seems as safe as possible.
Deborah Brooks says
That sounds really nice. We may end up having to do something like that as well
