Summer is the perfect time to take up cycling. Not only is it a fantastic way to cross train for runners, it’s a great way to #optOutside and explore. With so many more people choosing to saddle up this summer, I am sharing my 10 Summer Cycling Essentials.
10 Summer Cycling Essentials
Just starting or just getting back to cycling? I have narrowed down my 10 summer cycling essentials. Here’s what you need for a safe and comfortable bike ride this summer.
A good bike helmet
Probably the most important item (aside from your bike). Do not pick up a used helmet or use one from many years ago. The protective foam breaks down over time and it’s recommended to replace them about every 3 years. A women’s specific hemet like this one which has a pony tail port is the way to go. So much more comfortable than squeezing your hair in.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are a must to keep bugs and debris from getting into your eyes. Any sport specific or running sunglasses will do. Knockaround are my go to for both. They have some great sales.
Bike Shorts
Investing in a good pair of padded bike shorts can make all the difference in terms of comfort. The more comfortable you feel, the more you will want to ride your bike. Women’s bike shorts tend to range from 5 inch to 9 inch lengths. If you prefer the 5 inch shorts, these are a great buy from Pearl Izumi. If you like a little more coverage, these 8 inch women’s shorts are rated very highly by Bicycle magazine.
fingerless Bike Gloves
I always wear gloves when cycling to prevent blisters on my hands and also to give me a better grip when my hands are sweaty. Look for a pair with gel padding and a women specific fit. These Pearl Izumi come in 5 colors.
Road ID
Vital to have your emergency contact info on you when you cycle. My choice Road ID that attaches to my Garmin. You could also have a spare one that you attach directly to your bike in case of emergencies. Use code COACHDEBBIERUNS FOR 20% OFF.
Water Bottle & Cage
A simple wire bike cage or two is all you need to screw right onto your bike. I suggest insulated bike water bottles that can be frozen to keep cold on your ride. I’ve been using this one for 5 years still works like a charm. 11 colors to choose from.
Bike phone mount storage bags
Store your phone, keys, snacks and mask in this easy to attach mount. Waterproof just in case!
Bike Pump
Tires should be pumped up before every ride. The recommended PSI for your tires is printed right on them. An easy to use floor pump is key.
Flat tire repair kit
It is crucial to have a few items so that you (or a good samaritan) can change a flat tire mid ride. This saddle bag has the tools you need. Make sure to add in a spare tube compatible with your specific tire size.
Bike lock
Secure your bike without worry with a simple combination bike lock. Wraps around your seat stem when not in use.
Bonus items:
A fun bike jersey. While not as important as bike shorts, it is nice to have a few cycling jerseys. Most have pockets in the back to hold some gear or your phone. I prefer sleeveless jerseys that allow me to add a long sleeve shirt underneath or a jacket on top.
Reflective stickers
Riding in the early morning or a busy street? Be more visible with reflective stickers. These colorful flowers are fun.
Hope this gave you some ideas on Sumer Cycling Essentials to get you out there safely and comfortably. Will you be enjoying the great outdoors on our bike this summer?

I’ll be spending more time on my bike this summer so this is a great list.
I think I have everything except for the Road ID.
I should really order one! Thank you so much for the reminder.

I really like having it right on my Garmin so I don’t have to think about it. You never know. I love riding my bike in the summer as well Happy cycling

I don’t have a bike, but I definitely think I would rather bike outdoors than on my spin bike this summer! The main reason I’ve never considered getting a bike is we really don’t have anywhere safe to bike around here and I would need to drive at least 20 minutes or more to find somewhere to ride. This is a great list and I’m sure its very helpful for people who will be biking more this summer!

I love biking outdoors in the summer time and I always feel so much cooler with the breeze.

I’m such a novice on the cycle LOL (and I’m alright with that). I have thought of getting a phone holder or storage bag, but haven’t done so yet. I own one jersey, and it’s sleeveless…currently on the search for a couple more. And, I really need a mini repair kit…not that I’d have a clue how to use anything inside of it.
Deborah Brooks says
I know you love your bike too! Have a mini tool kit is essential. Admittedly I do not know how to change a flat but someone else can quickly help you in a situation. We all get flats every so often just happens. I have some great bike jersey suggestions if you are interested. The phone storage bag is a must for me as well.It holds my phone, keys and snacks. Happy cycling!

My bike is still in the basement but I am lacking the essentials. I am enjoying walking too much to drag it upstairs and I need a bike rack so I could ride in some interesting places. Maybe next year.
Deborah Brooks says
I think this might be the summer to get it up and running 🙂

With the ridiculous heat wave we are having, I am going to have to get on the bike! This was a great reminder of everything I need.
Deborah Brooks says
I know you love to bike as well!

I’ll only be enjoying the outdoors on a bike if I bring my stationary bike outdoors, LOL! Which I could actually do, as it doesn’t require electricity. However, I’d be scared that a stray shower will kill it. 🙂 I actually have given some consideration to it!
Deborah Brooks says
Sure you could do that why not!?
Kim G says
These are all great biking essentials! I don’t do any outdoor cycling but you know I’m on the Peloton bike all the time, lol. I found compression cycling shorts from Old Navy that I really like for riding. Besides that, I always have a bottle of water and my towel.
Deborah Brooks says
WE may need to get you to opt outside one of these years! I bet you would like it
Denise says
Padded shorts are a definite must. I really need to get a Road ID. Thanks for the link to Debbie’s discount.
Deborah Brooks says
absolutely!
Jenn says
Cycling can be so tough in the summer. I always get so hot and claustrophobic in my helmet. and there’s no coming back from that.
Great tips and suggestions.
Deborah Brooks says
I find it much cooler than running-natural breeze!
Debbie says
I keep saying this but I am going to get back to cycling this year. Summer is rough here, though I do ride early. I have a ton of shorts and jerseys from back in the day but I guess I’ll need a new helmet (and to relearn how to change a tube!).
Deborah Brooks says
It’s so much cooler to bike than run in the summer time. I bet Alan would be excited if you biked again 🙂
Amy Gorin says
It looks like you’re all decked out! I am in desperate need of some new riding sunglasses that cover my eyes!

I don’t cycle but my husband does and he loves the bike jerseys with the pockets! He claims it was the greatest invention ever to come with cycling!
Deborah Brooks says
They sure do come in handy!

Deborah, a perfect checklist for summer cycling. At first, I missed pump but then, later on, I bought it. I love cycling in all seasons actually. It does not only control my weight but also refreshes me all day long.
