Will Run For Chocolate-Hershey Half Recap

I have had the Hershey Half on my bucket list for a few years now and was thrilled to be able to rope in a slew of friends to join me to run it. Some people run for beer but I always joke about how I will run for chocolate and I finally got the chance last weekend.

Backing up a bit, life kind of threw a couple of curve balls into my training the past few months and I was really worried about training for this race effectively. After a flair up of PF and a moving date looming, I knew that this was going to be tough to pull off. As luck would have it, I was able to switch to running this half as a relay race with my friend, Holly.

Will Run For Chocolate

Our girls weekend started off with an easy drive up to Hershey, PA and a quick visit to the expo for packet pick up. I have to say that the expo was slightly disappointing with not too many vendors. We did however get a fun photo with some of our favorite candy bars.

Each race entry comes with free tickets to Hershey park so we took a quick visit. It seemed kind of odd to visit the park without any kids in tow. You know you are getting old when you think the merry go round seems fast. LOL

There is a subtle smell of chocolate in the air as you stroll through the grounds and wander through Chocolate World. That is my kind of smell. We continued our girls weekend by stuffing ourselves at dinner at Harvest in the Hershey Hotel. It was so delicious and we were all more than fueled for the race the next morning.

As I was doing the second half of the relay, I was not at the start line and instead met my partner at the exchange point around the 6.6 mile marker. It was a little chaotic at the exchange but I found Holly and I was off on my half of the half.

The race course was well staffed with water stops, tons of crowd support, rolling hills and chocolate bars. Yes they handed out mini Hershey bars which I stuffed right into my pocket for later refueling. Having not done any runs over 8 miles lately, I was a little a worried going in. As soon as I started running, I felt pretty good and knew that I would be okay. Slow and steady was my motto that day. Soon enough, I saw the Hershey stadium in front of me and the finish line ahead. Found my friends and joined in the celebration.

A great girls weekend and just what I needed. So grateful for the relay option this time but Hershey Half -next year I am coming back to run the whole thing myself. Isn’t it funny how escaping for the weekend to run a race is actually relaxing?

That’s great that you could do the relay instead of the full half. And a race with chocolate sounds like a good idea.

There is a race over here that always sells out way before I get a chance to enter called the Cakeathon. It’s a lap race and you can do as many laps within 8 hours as you like But the aid stations groan under the weight of cake. I really need to be quicker off the mark to enter!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/20/2016 at 12:12 pm
