Weekly Wrap A wrench in my plans

This week just completely few by! With both of my kids home with us this week, we have been busy! In a good way. I have absolutely loved having them both home. I was also 2 weeks (now one week) out from the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. I was planning on having a much more intense week than I did training wise. Unfortunately, this week through a little wrench in my plans.

A Wrench In My Plans

Last Saturday, I bent over to pick something up the wrong way and tweaked my back. Ugh so stupid and annoying! I know how to bend my knees to pick up heavy things but somehow I did it anyway. I seriously could not move without being in serious pain the rest of the weekend. I had the bright idea that I could get in that last 8 mile run anyway.

Sunday- 5 ish miles

Yea not a great idea. My back was killing me and had to cut my run short. I was able to get an emergency massage in which helped a little bit. Spent the rest of the evening on the heating pad.

Monday- stretch and unplanned rest day

So after getting yelled at by my trainer, he worked on it a bit and stretched me out. Not able to do our usual strength training workout. He put me on an alternating heat and ice regimen.

Tuesday-unplanned rest day

Had to skip my run today. Back still really hurting. I had a mother daughter spa day planned for my daughter’s birthday and that was perfect timing. I had this really unusual massage with a heated bamboo stick. Very different than anything I had ever had and he was really able to get into those sore spots. Started to feel a lot better.

Wednesday-90 min boxing and strength training

A wrench in my plans

I was able to do my Wednesday workout but at much less intensity than we normally do.

Thursday- 5.5 mile run + 60 min yoga stretch class

 A wrench in my plans

Feeling much better and no pain while running. A nice much warmer day out too had us a little playful.

Friday-12 mile bike ride

A wrench in my plans

After waking up and realizing that my sprint tri was in 5 weeks and that I had not been on my bike in 6 months, I decided why not? It was unseasonably warm and I figured it was a great day to get back on that horse. I forgot how much I love biking too but wow I am not in bike shape at all.

Saturday- rest day

My back is almost back to normal. Still taking a little advil. Really dodged a bullet there!

Sunday-7 miles on the plan

Last long run before Cherry Blossom next Sunday.

My dumb back move really threw a wrench in my plans this past week. If I can manage not to hurt myself doing something non running related, next week I will be running the Cherry Blossom ten miler. Send warm and dry weather vibes our way! Hope everyone had a happy Passover and Easter.

Oh no!!! I hope your back calms down. Can you at least get in the pool for some pool running?

I felt a little tweak when I was doing those burpees last month. That’s when I realized that challenge was not for me. I don’t want to risk injury. Everything in moderation.

Like you, I am not always so good at moderation! 🙂 My back is feeling much better thankfully. No pain at all on my run today woo hoo

So sorry about your back 🙁 It’s so annoying when we injure ourselves doing basic tasks not related to running! That has definitely happened to me before.

I hope that your back feels better soon and that you can run the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler!

Glad to hear that your back is feeling better! Can’t believe that cherry blossom is so close! Can’t wait to hear all about it. You’re going to kill it!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/01/2018 at 5:53 pm

I am feeling much better thanks! I will complete it for sure but don’t think it will be my best one. That’s ok!

Oh man, I’m sorry about your back! I hate when I do things like that because I totally know better too. I’m glad it’s starting to feel better and I hope it continues so you can be out there next weekend! I may have to DNS next weekend and I’m pretty bummed about it. We’ll see how this week goes but I just don’t know.

I am feeling much better and I plan to be there! Hope you recover as well and are able to make your race. Take care!

Somehow I totally missed that “little” detail about your back! YIKES! I’m glad to hear things are feeling better, but take it easy, girl…you’ve got a scenic 10-miler on the roster 😉

I know! Yes I think I am going to be ok feeling much better after today’s run

That spa day sounds lovely. That massage sounds very interesting. I always like trying different ones out.

It is fun to try out new massages isn’t it?

I am so sorry to hear about the back, but it really sounds like you’re well on the mend. It’s so easy to do — even if you do bend right!

A massage with heated bamboo sounds really interesting. I’ve never heard of it!

    Happy Easter/Passover!

I am on the mend thanks! The bamboo massage was really interesting and felt amazing. Happy Passover to you as well

I hope your back calms down before Cherry Blossom! You are welled trained so just focus on recovery until race day. Isn’t it frustrating when innocent, non-running movements cause problems? Oh, I’m jealous of your bike ride. I was going to do that this weekend (and should have!). Thanks for linking.

      04/01/2018 at 8:09 pm

My back is already feeling much better thanks. I was so glad that I jumped on the bike bc our weather has been so up and down.

One week until Cherry Blossom? It really is getting into the swing of spring racing. Hopefully your back gets better, and you can have a great race.

    • Deborah Brooks says

thanks I am feeling much better already! Good to go

  11. Coco says

Argh! I wrenched my back/shoulder earlier this year and had to miss work to get an emergency massage – it was bad. And then there’s that ridiculous ankle incident. I hope your back is 100% by now and you STAY HEALTHY for the next week (and beyond, of course).

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/01/2018 at 8:12 pm

It’s much better already thanks! See you there 🙂

Oh man that’s scary. I’m so glad to hear your back is feeling better now.

I hear you about getting into bike shape. I don’t know why but it always surprises me when I get on a bike and realize running fitness is not bike fitness

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/01/2018 at 8:12 pm

That surprises me every spring when I get onto my bike for the first time!

  13. Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says

    04/01/2018 at 7:56 pm

Yikes! I hope the back is problem free this week. But at least it happened during a taper for the race and didn’t sideline much of training.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/01/2018 at 8:15 pm

      yes it’s much better thanks!

  14. Lisa @ Mile by Mile says

I hope your back continues to improve before your race! I’m glad you were able to run again and at least you already got in most of your training so you will be ready for your race. It’s never a good time to get injured though, right?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/02/2018 at 7:13 am

No never a good time at all!

  15. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    04/02/2018 at 10:57 am

Sometimes I hurt myself doing something really dumb…like walking upstairs. I’ve tweaked my knee before and last year I slept funny on my neck and couldn’t run for 5 days. I hate when stuff like that happens. Glad your back started to feel better and hopefully you stay healthy going into race week!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/02/2018 at 1:41 pm

      I know it’s so frustrating!

  16. Teresa says

    04/02/2018 at 8:23 pm

Dang girl, sounds like we all have been hit by the injury bus! Glad yours is feeling better. I’m so ready to get my bike out on the road as well. I’m considering a duathlon in two weeks even though I haven’t ridden in quite a while.

Sending you all the best vibes for a fast and beautiful race with perfect running temps!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/02/2018 at 9:09 pm

You should do for it! I really want to do a Du also but have not found one that fits my schedule yet

  17. Clarinda says

    04/02/2018 at 9:03 pm

Oh no! So sorry to hear about your back, but you still got in some good workouts. Hope it continues to feel better and that you have great weather for your race this weekend!
