While we have all been enjoying the fabulous fall temps, we know winter is quickly approaching. No need to be banished to the treadmill when you can enjoy running outside all winter long. Knowing what to wear for every temp is kind of a “Goldilocks” predicament at times. (Too hot?, Too cold? or Just right?) Not to worry I am sharing my What To Wear For Winter Runs guide and “running” a giveaway from my friends at Skirt Sports for a Wonder Wool Shirt. Thanks to Skirt Sports for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.
What To Wear For Winter Runs
As you might know, I have been a Skirt Sports ambassador for 3 years now. I pretty much live in their clothes for all my runs and workouts so I thought it fitting to do my whole entire What To Wear For Every Temp Winter Running guide with all Skirt Sports gear.
50-55 Degrees
Picture perfect running temps for me! Capri pants and a tank top or short sleeve shirt. Pictured here Pocketopia and Tank.
45-50 Degrees
Capri and long sleeve tech shirt. Alternatively, tank with a light half zip. Pictured Pocketopia and Free Flow long sleeve
35-45 Degrees (and Giveaway item)
Tights, long sleeve and vest, lightweight gloves and thermal headband. Pictured here Triple Pocket Tights and Wonder Wool Long sleeve. The Wonder Wool is one of Skirt Sports new fall items and one of my instant favorites. It’s super soft “thermo wool” wicks away your sweat while keeping you warm. It’s the perfect base layer for any of your winter activities and cute enough to wear out on it’s own too. (Make sure to enter my giveaway at the bottom of the post.)
25-35 Degrees
Warmer tights (or fleece lined) and vest or light weight jacket. Thermal headband and gloves. Pictured below Toasty Tights (with anti chill fabric) Wonder Wool base layer,Wind stopping jacket, hat, gloves.
Under 25 Degrees
Lined tights (or 2 pairs), turtleneck or fleece lined based layer and Running Jacket. Neck gaitor or Balaclava on face. Hat, gloves and hand warmers. Pictured Below Toasty Tights.
While everyone has a slightly different body temperature, this What To Wear For Winter Runs guide has been spot on for me. Hope you find it helpful in planning for your winter runs and outdoor activities.
Now to the Giveaway! Skirt Sports has generously offered to give one of you your choice of the new Wonder Wool Long Sleeve base layer shirt. Sure to become your new favorite as well. If you just can’t wait, feel free to use my promo code FALL20WIN for 20% anything on Skirt Sports.
Tell me: What is your winter running must have pieces?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
It can be so tricky to figure out what to wear in cold weather, especially early in the season. I have alot of different types of tops for layering, so its all about mixing and matching to figure out the perfect combo!
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely! Thanks for entering
Emily @ Pizza & Pull-Ups says
That is some really cute running gear!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I do love their colors and patterns
Kimberly Hatting says
I love my fleece-lined tights for winter running. Even though they are b.o.r.i.n.g black, I sometimes layer a funky-patterned pair of tights over them 😉 YOur outfits look great!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I did pull out all the colors for this one!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I think we have a different threshold for cold! 35-45 I am dressed like you but instead of tights, shorts!
Deborah Brooks says
wow shorts in the 30’s!?
Debbie says
You make a great model! It rarely gets anywhere near that cold here, so I’ve never purchased any of the Toasty items (too many other things to buy!).
Deborah Brooks says
There are so many cute items this fall! I am loving the wonder wool
Annmarie says
Getting dressed really IS half the battle! I LOVE that long sleeve – no wait, I NEED IT!
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely you do! It’s cold up there in NY
Lori Mayer says
I have to have a hat on my head. I don’t know if it was from when a little and my mom would always yell out a hat on your head. Also when I was in high school and finishing swim practice with a wet head and putting a hat on.
Erinn says
My winter running must have is gloves! And fleece lined tights 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Gloves of different weights are a must indeed!
Wendy says
Gloves. My hands get so cold!!!
Deborah Brooks says
Mine too! I use handwarmers in them a lot
Maureen says
A winter running must have for me in high socks! I hate my ankles being cold so I happily look like an odd ball with socks over my tights to keep them warm. Plus if there’s snow it doesn’t get my skin wet when I run since it’s covered.
Deborah Brooks says
I’ve never worn high socks over tights but hey why not if it works for you?!
Rita says
Think I meed those super cute zig zag capris…
Deborah Brooks says
I think you might too!
Rita says
I ordered them…we will see if I can squeeze myself into a small..it was all that was left…
Deborah Brooks says
Keep me posted!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I really need to try skirtsports! I need some good running leggings with good pockets that don’t slide down!
Deborah Brooks says
They have great pockets and totally stay in place while running. They also have a drawstring waist
AmySo says
Honestly…unless it’s under 20 degrees, I’m ok in regular tights and a long sleeve. My MUST HAVE requirement for any long sleeve is thumb holes!
Deborah Brooks says
Thumb holes are great! What did we do before them?
Laura Runs a Latte says
My treadmill 😉 But for those days when I DO actually get outside, definitely layers, gloves, and a warm hat/beanie.
Deborah Brooks says
I try to get outside whenever I can over the treadmill. Just feels good to have the fresh air to me
Christy Thomas says
I had a rough idea of what to wear for cold weather, but in Texas, we don’t get much “cold” so this was a good reminder. I’m also an ambassador and don’t have much SS cold weather gear. Might have to get a couple pieces!!
Deborah Brooks says
You never know when you might “need” them right!? Thanks for stopping in
kelly tupick says
My go to winter item is my boots!
Deborah Brooks says
A great pair of boots is a must for sure.
Karen Levin says
My winter running MUST have are good ear warmers (Fleece ear band or ear muffs) and warm thermal mittens!
Deborah Brooks says
For some reason the ear muffs always slide off of my ears!
Darla Pike says
I love the wonderwool skirt and pants. Thinking about the lines tights, any thoughts on fit and sizing. I live in Iowa and winters usually kill my running.
Deborah Brooks says
The tights all seem to fit me in my regular sizing. I bet it does get really cold there!I have not tried the wonder wool skirt yet but the top is amazing I love it
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Even though it’s been warm lately, it’s important to know how to dress when the temperature drops. Can I just say how cute you look in everything you wear? SkirtSports clothing looks great, I really need those Toasty tights!
I usually have a hat and gloves that I wear through the winter. I’m trying to get some better pieces for the super cold runs! What a great giveaway 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Oh you are sweet! Yes you should totally try Skirt Sports the quality is great and I do wear them all winter long
Rosie Goucher says
I would love to try the Winter Wool top. I think it would be perfect for those random cold days in the Bay Area.
Deborah Brooks says
It sure would!
Courtney Wells says
I live in a warmer climate so, most of this would be great to try… if I lived like a polar bear! We can barely get out of capris but, I do love a good headband to cover my ears. Thanks for sharing and a giveaway!
Deborah Brooks says
Well I guess you are kind of lucky to have a moderate climate to run in all year long!
Jessy S says
My “must have” for winter is fleece lined leggings. I’ve been eyeing the Wonder Wool collection since it came out! It’s generally below freezing most of the winter where I live, so I always need plenty of layers when I run outside.
Deborah Brooks says
The wonder wool is a great base layer I am really enjoying running in it
Sheryl says
I love Skirt Sports! Love the pictures and how you layer according to the temps. I will be doing 50k/marathon training this winter – started last night, in fact – and would really put the Wonder Wool shirt to good use as a warm base layer!
Deborah Brooks says
That’s really impressive! Good luck to you and happy training. Thanks for stopping by and entering!

Akaleistar says
Love how you break these looks down by temps! I always bundle up in winter 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so much for checking it out
Jessica says
I have to wear brushed tights … they give me so much warmth. That and a headband or hat when it’s really cold. I can usually only wear gloves for about a mile before I shed them.
Deborah Brooks says
I usually end up taking my gloves off at some point too but I love them at the start
Rebecca says
what a great post! I’m no runner, but I’d rather brave the cold than the treadmill! PS love those bright colorful tights!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks and yes me too! the tights are great for just hanging out in too
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
I think I need those toasty tights!! That’s the worst part for me – I don’t layer my lower half properly. I come home and my legs are so red! :/
Deborah Brooks says
Ooh that sounds painful! Check out the toasty tights
Abbey Sharp says

Great tips! I have an awesome base layer shirt from another brand but would love to try the Skirt Sports version. Those tops help keep you super cozy, esp up here in chilly MA!
Deborah Brooks says
I am in love with the base layer!
Jenn says
So cute!
I do tend to wear shorts all the way down into the 30s, just because I run hot. I don’t think I’ve ever had to wear fleece, either. It’s crazy how different climates can be!
Deborah Brooks says
Wow shorts in the 30″s? Brr
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
An ear warmer and gloves are an absolute must for me for winter running.
Deborah Brooks says
Gloves and hand warmers for me!
Hannah says
Mittens are a must! I run super warm overall…like, no vest/lined tights until it’s in single digits or super windy…but my hands freeze. And then they are so painful when they start warming up. I finally got some running mittens last winter and they are so much warmer than gloves.
Deborah Brooks says
My hands get very cold as well at the start
Sarah P says
I love fleece lined tights!!
Deborah Brooks says
They are great to have on hand
Jessica Levinson says
Loved all your running outfits! The patterns on the pants are so fun!
Deborah Brooks says

Ah yes, the fine art of layering. I’m a Life-long Wisconsinite, and many times I still don’t get to right.
I am loving my Toasty Cheeks tights and vest lately. I think they will be a staple this winter.
I’m also a sucker for hats. Anything fun and colorful.
Deborah Brooks says
Fun and colorful hats are a great way to accessorize for sure. I am looking forward to pulling out the toasty cheeks
Mary says
I like your 35-45 degree outfit the best, and it also looks like what I would wear to the rink. I wonder what temperature it is at our rink? I think warmer than that but it would be interesting to know. Cute leggings and I’m excited to have a chance to win the wool base layer top!
Deborah Brooks says
I always think of the rinks being warmer than that but I agree that would be a great skate outfit. Thanks for entering!
Coach Henness says
AH! A good thermal headband is SUCH A MUST. I rarely ever have to worry about sub 30 weather. I’d say you dress pretty much like I would too. Although I may go full length tights in the first two categories because…laundry. 😀
Deborah Brooks says
Oh the winter workout wear laundry!
Karen Bayne says
It is hard to get the layers just right, but this is a great guideline 🙂
Those first few cold runs are the hardest, we aren’t use to feeling cool when we start after summer lol
I love the thermal headband!
I like to keep thin fabric gloves around too so I can toss them in the wash easy 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
The first few runs are always tricky you are right! It’s hard to fight the urge to over dress
Carly Bell says
My must have is a headband to keep my ears warm. I can live with cold fingers and a cold nose, but cold ears are a misery!
Deborah Brooks says
I do love the headbands too thanks for entering
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says

The wonder wool is fantastic hope you check it out

Deborah Brooks says
So we may need to meet for a shopping date…:)
Toni says
Great post. SO many people are always questioning what to wear when the weather changes. I am thankful not to have to really worry about winter wear here in Florida. We have a handful of mornings where it is cold, but mostly not so much.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I would imagine it’s much easier to manage down in Florida!
Zenaida Arroyo says
A must have for me is a warm jacket. It gets cold here in Chicago and I need something to keep me warm.

Deborah Brooks says
my hands get cold too and I often add in hand warmers to my gloves
MCM Mama says
Cute post. I’ve been struggling to hit it just right this fall, mostly because the wind and the lack of sun seem to be messing with my usual “rules”.

Yes the wind does make a difference for sure. We have been pretty lucky with a few fabulous weather days the last few weeks
Michelle B says

Deborah Brooks says
Yes great gloves are a must thanks for stopping by today

I always overdress and regret it so things I can take off later are great. Arm sleeves. Those headbands that cover the ears. I lost my pair of gloves, but any pullover with sleeves long enough to cover my hands is appreciated.
Deborah Brooks says

I’ve only ever run through California winters, so I didn’t really have that much stuff that was different. It’ll be different in New Jersey for sure! :[
Deborah Brooks says
