Good Morning! I am so excited for this month’s Ultimate Coffee Date. It looks like we are going to have a bunch of new friends join us this month. I love to discover new blogs and can’t wait to “meet” everyone. The rules are simple: Chit chat about whatever is going on in your life, please use our badge somewhere in your post and link back to your hosts (myself, Coco and Lynda) and please try to visit some of the other links. That helps us all to grow! Have fun!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…I think I am finally turning the corner and getting rid of this dumb plantar fasciitus. It’s been hurting since mid December and has really thrown my half marathon training for a loop. I was supposed to run the DC RnR race in March but now I am thinking that is unlikely. So bummed because this happened last year too when I had a stress fracture. I think I am not destined to do that race. I was really upset at first but I’m over it. So many races to do.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…All of this non running the past 2 months has thrown me back into spinning, swimming and hot yoga. I am killing it in that spin class! If only I could find some way to translate that fast leg turnover into running. Not sure how to do that. I am really enjoying the classes and know that I am keeping up my cardio and I even get my friends to join me sometimes. The yoga is really helping stretch out my calf so I need to keep that up and hopefully help stop the PF from returning.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…Speaking of spinning and swimming, I’ve decided to jump back in and start doing some tri races this summer. I haven’t done one in 4 years so I’m excited and a little nervous to do them again. I think it will force me to continue with my cross training and not just run. Hopefully, this will head off more running injuries. I’ve even tricked talked 2 of my close friends into joining me. I know it will be a blast so stay tuned for updates.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…I really have been enjoying the extra motivation from all the Sweat Pink Challenges the past month. I roped my friends into joining me for the wall sit challenge and our photo won a prize! Fun!
So when I was invited to join in the 12 week Lorna Jane Fit Challenge, I was all over it! It is a combo of workouts, nutrition & motivation. It’s pretty simple, the focus is on clean eating & 30 min strength training routines appropriate for all levels of fitness. There is also a FB group to join for motivation. I’d love for you to join me check out the info here. The challenge runs February thru May so you will see my updates on my progress.
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…Coco and I finally got to workout together yesterday at SolidCore! So fun to meet up “in real life” too. SolidCore is awesomely hard and super challenging in a way that is hard to describe. Read my review here. I wonder is she can walk today and if she is still speaking to me after this workout?
Unfortunately, Lynda lives on the other side of the country but we definitely thought of you and missed you!
So looking forward to reading all of the links below.
I’ve been chatting away, now it’s your turn…
If we were having coffee, What would you tell me?
Terra Heck says
If we were having coffee, I’d have to admit to you that I’m not a runner. It’s never been my forte. However, my 16 yoa son is very involved with races, Track, and Cross Country. He does quite well with it all. At one point he had plantar fasciitus and was in quite a bit of pain, so I can definitely empathize.
Deborah Brooks says
PF is the worst! Seriously it just won’t go away. My 14 yo son will run shorter races with me and now he is faster than me. I do like it when we do fun races together. Thanks for stopping by for coffee
Farrah says
I’m glad you found a temporary-ish alternative to running, and I’m so sorry about your plantar fasciitis! I hope you recover completely soon! <3
I've been really liking all the Sweat Pink challenges too! :] They help to keep me motivated, and also prompt me to do/try things I don't normally do (e.g. yoga).
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I do think I’m turning the corner with it. I am having so much fun with the challenges too.
Lara @ Uptite Mamas says
I have been happy to hear that you are starting back up with running. But at least these last couple of months have left you the opportunity to try new things! I wish there was a Solid Core near me. I did look it up on your previous post because it definitely looks like someting to try!
Thank you for the opportunity to link up with this great party today!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am doing different things and I think ultimately that is good for my body maybe not good for my head. Sorry they don’t have solidcore around you yet but maybe soon. Thanks for linking up!
Mary Beth Jackson says
Looking good lady and you have your red on! 🙂 I am so glad you haven’t let your foot injury slow down your other activities, you are killing it! I know you hate missing your race so hopefully you plan some fun ones for the fall! Thank you for the coffee and Have a great weekend! I love the coffee link up!
Deborah Brooks says
I love the coffee link ups too! Yes I have my red on and was thinking of you. Have a great weekend!
Melanie says
I just returned to yoga this week and I loved it!! It’s exactly what I needed. Boo on that plantar issue. It’s the hardest thing to heal! Glad it’s getting better!
Deborah Brooks says
It’s really an annoying issue for sure! So glad you are enjoying yoga too. Thanks for joining us today!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Hot yoga definitely helped me rehab my hip injury! And I was able to come back to running without too much trouble. So hopefully it helps you as well! I’ll be excited to follow along on your tri-journey! I’m contemplating one myself so I’m following blogs that talk about triathlon training.
Thanks for hosting this link up! I’m excited to join you guys this month 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
So glad you are joining us too! These are always my favorite posts to write. Hot yoga is great to do while rehabbing an injury. I need to remind myself to stick to it.Yes for tri-ing a tri!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
So good to hear you’re turning the corner with the PF! And you’re right there are still so many races to choose from! Glad we had a chance to grab coffee today 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! I hope I can get rid of it in the next few weeks. Thanks so much for dropping over to chat.
Lynda@fitnessmomwinecountry says
I so wish I were with you gals. It seems that everyone has a fellow blogger gal pal living near by. I want you gals to visit the wine country and hang with me! What a fun time you had.
Deborah Brooks says
Well we just might have to take a road trip!!
[email protected] says
I love that you and Coco got to workout together. I love meeting blogger friends. And, love the IG challenges. Good luck with the Lorna Jane challenge – so awesome!
Deborah Brooks says
The IG challenges have been so much fun. I’m kind of new to IG but it just sucks you in! Thanks for stopping in for coffee
Cassi says
Stress fracture last year. Plantar fasciitis this year. I’m wondering if it’s your body’s way of telling you to cut back on running and focus on something else.
Deborah Brooks says
Ugh I hope not! I just have to listen to it more.
Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says
That is exciting to hear the plantar fascitis is going away. I haven’t had it, but a lot of the ladies I work with have it and it’s not an easy thing to get over. Who knows maybe all that spinning will just help you out for your running as you begin to get back into it??
Let’s see if we we having a chat, I’d tell you I am enjoying getting back into marathon training. But I was a total wimp this morning with the strong winds and well didn’t run…yet… I can run in cold, heat, ice rain or snow and love it. But you add strong winds, it messes with my mind and like today I wimp out… I really need to get over it, LOL
Deborah Brooks says
It is really hard to run in the wind and this winter has been brutal everywhere!
Ima Mosier says
It looks like you have so many fun things going on workout wise. The cross training should definitely help your running when your PF clears up. Good luck with your tris this season.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! It has been hard not to run as much as I’d like, but I think your right I will certainly be a better swimmer.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Ugh, PF! I battled that on and off for over a year, a few years ago. Occasionally, I get a twinge in my arch and I attack it immediately with massage, rolling, and my PF compression sleeves. Don’t want to go there again!
Deborah Brooks says
Ugh it is the worst seriously but I think I am starting to come out of it.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I hope your plantar fasciitis goes away soon! I have it too so I know how annoying it is to not be able to do certain things.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh you do! I think I’ve tried everything but if you have any miracle cures please send them my way!
Erica @ erica finds says
I am going to link up tomorrow and am excited to read all of the posts! Glad your PF is improving! It is indeed the worst. I think the cross training you are doing will totally help. I find that spin helps with speed and leg turnover. And you don’t have to do anything special. I will be interested to hear how you feel when you start running training again. I loved the challenges, too, but I am a bit fitness challenged out. I am trying to do #28DaysofKindness with Greatist and KINDBar. Do something kind for someone every day in Feb. Yup. That’s a challenge I can get behind!
Deborah Brooks says
That’s a tough challenge too! I do love the coffee dates so looking forward to seeing yours up tomorrow. I hope spin helps! I miss running all the time with my friends.
Jenny @ TurtleStride says
I’m sorry to hear your still out of commission to run but it sounds like you’ve found some great alternatives! I haven’t tried Spin yet but everyone raves about it!
Deborah Brooks says
I am just starting back to running slowly but surely. I hope I can get my mileage and speed back soon. Spin is great!
Tricia @ A Couple Of Dashes says
I’m so sorry to hear about your PF! That’s horrible. I had it awhile ago and it was the worst. I’m also sorry to hear about you not being able to do your RnR race two years in a row. That’s not fun at all! Take care of yourself and hopefully you will be back to it soon!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I definitely plan to be!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Such a bummer about RnR, so sorry to hear that, but I think it’s probably the right decision! Wish I had been able to go to Solidcore with you!
Deborah Brooks says
does kind of stink about rnr but I’d rather be healthy for Ragnar and honestly it still hurts so dumb to push it. The solidcore class was way harder last night. I’m wiped today
Marcia says
I’m so bummed to hear PF is foiling your plan to run RnRDC! My first half of the year isn’t until April but somehow I’m really struggling with running LSD right now. I’m kinda wanting to be done at the 1 hour mark. Yay for putting a tri on tap. I’ll hopefully be doing my first this June…pending on how my swimming goes.
Deborah Brooks says
swimming was always my least favorite part but this year that may change!
Mike (Fasterthanfrank.blogspot.com) says
It always stinks to be hurt, but it’s great that you are focusing on the positives. With all of the other things that you’ve been doing you will probably see a pretty big improvement in your running right off the bat!
Deborah Brooks says
Well I certainly hope so! Thanks for stopping by!
Shayna says
What a bummer about RNR! Maybe it will be meant to be one day? If I were having coffee with you I’d tell you I just signed up for my first timed 10K in May! I am one who struggles with running and getting out there! So I’m forcing down the I don’t wanna’s and just doing it! One of my twins is doing it with me so it should be fun! It’s at our zoo so I’m trying to talk him into a cool running costume! Maybe even an animal theme!
Deborah Brooks says
10k’s are great! Doing it with a sibling is even more fun. Have a great time.
Kim says
Oh, I love that you and Coco got to meet up – that’s awesome!!
Glad your PF is starting to get better!!!
I would say that I’m loving the rare warm weather we are having this winter (almost 70 today!).
Deborah Brooks says
oh wow I am jealous of that temp! It is getting better but still there.
Ali says
I love the idea of a “coffee date”! I’ll have to play along the next time around. I have never been to a yoga class, but I so want to try hot yoga. I am not super flexible so I think yoga in general would be a huge help. The hot aspect sounds sooooo soothing.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh we’d love to have you next month. They are such fun posts to write and read. Hot yoga is great hope you get to check it out!
Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC says
i’m really excited for you that you are turning the corner on your PF. yay for getting back into running with a strong base of fitness!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! It definitely still hurts but getting better-so frustrating!
MCM Mama says
Good job on all of the cross training! I wish I loved to cross train as much as I love to run, but really, I just don’t.
One of these days I’ll get to Solidcore with you.
Deborah Brooks says
Anytime! For me it’s important to cross train to maintain my fitness and I like the muscle definition I get from it that I don’t get from only running.
Natalie says
You are a cross training queen! 🙂
This is definitely going to help your running.
So glad the PF is almost going away! Boo for the stress fracture last year – I didn’t know that. We need to chat – I have questions…
Hey – I tried the coconut oil in my hair – LOVE. It is so soft and shiny now
Thanks!!
Deborah Brooks says
We do have to chat (or have coffee) in real life sometime! We have lots in common. Yay for soft hair!
Amanda says
Yay for getting back into triathlons! And I love that you got some of your friends to join you. Best of luck with your training this year.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I am excited that we will all be doing it together.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
It makes me so sad for you that two years in a row you can’t run the race you want to because of an injury. I really hope you’re on the end of the recovery so that you can get back to running and run all the races that you want to!
Deborah Brooks says
ugh me too! I am getting there. Learning that I have to listen to my body more.
Coco says
It was so great to see you! Luckily I got my run in early Saturday before the DOMS really set in. Then I spent the afternoon laid out on the couch! Still, I feel like I need to go back to do it better!
Deborah Brooks says
ha! Yes fun to see you too. I love feeling sore in new places! It is entirely diff from anything I do.
Thebluestbutterfly says
I definitely need to participate in the Coffee Date next month. Is it the same date every month? 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
It is the first Saturday of each month and we would love to have you join us next month. It’s lots of fun!
Molly @alsoranagain says
I’m so happy for you that your PF is resolving! The rest, cross-training, and positive attitude worked wonders. I hope the same factors help me in my recovery. I’ve considered trying spin again because I can’t run and need to do cardio. I need to check with my PT first, though, because I don’t want it to anger my hip flexor!
Deborah Brooks says
If you can do it it’s a great workout. I hope you feel better soon too and that we are both back to running in no time.
Kelli says
If I were having coffee with you: I would empathize with you about the PF. And tell you to be patient with it. I had it starting in late 2013 (Richmond Marathon was awful, I was altering my stride to compensate for the PF pain and ended up with other soreness from the stride alterations). It subsided through the spring and came back at Puerto Rice 70.3 during the run. I was tired and hot and my running mechanics went into the toilet…and the foot started hurting. Then it subsided and came back in June when I stepped on a tree root running barefoot through transition. All this time I was stretching, icing, massaging. I finally took a break from running (6 miles per week or less) for most of the fall. I focused on cycling and swimming and other cross training. At this point it seems under control (fingers crossed) and I have started to increase mileage again and add in speedwork.
I know you love racing/running events so I hope you can get it under control. You’ll keep your fitness for sure with all the x-training you do and the running specificity will return quickly.
Akaleistar says
Glad to hear your plantar fasciitus is getting better! Tri races sound exciting 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Oh I am so glad too!
Sara @ lifebetweenthemiles says
I’m glad your plantar fascitis is feeling better! If we were having coffee I’d tell you that I am really loving my new strength training regimen but I need to get back to doing yoga at least once a week!
Deborah Brooks says
I love strength training too but you’re right it is so important to keep yoga in the mix.
Lisa @ Lisa Runs for Cupcakes says
Hopefully with a little more rest and not running RNR, your PF will resolve itself. If we were to have coffee, I would share that I have been down and out for a week now with a cold. No running has me a bit worried about the Princess Half Marathon in two weeks but right now, I just need to get healthy! I may have to actually call in sick from work to really get rid of this hacking cough for good.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh no it’s really hard to miss a race for sure I hope you feel better before yours. I would prob take off work so I could get better to run too! LOL
Kaitlyn A says
Glad to hear your PF is getting better!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! Me too it’s been the biggest annoyance for sure
GingerRachelle says
If we were having coffee I would tell you I love your blog name! This looks like a fun link up. I’m a little late for it this time but I’ll definitely participate next time around!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! We keep it open for a few days each month and we’d love to have you join us. Always the 1st Sat of the month. Thanks so much for stopping by
Smitha @ RunningwithSDMom says
If we were having coffee I would tell you that I think you are amazing trying a Tri. And doing multiple. My swimming skills are garbage!
Deborah Brooks says
Well mine were too until I practiced. The swimming is still the hardest part for me but it will get better. Thanks for stopping by!
Sarah H says
I’d probably have to tell you that I’m jealous of all the different types of cross training you get in! And you make it all look like a blast!
Deborah Brooks says
It is lots of fun to mix it up for sure! Thanks for stopping in for coffee.
Jenn @ RunWithSole says
Plantar fasciitis is the worst! It can be such a niggling injury that just doesn’t want to go away. But I’m glad that you’re finding other ways to be active and get your groove on! Those wall squats look awesome and I can’t believe how relaxed you are in that photo!
If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’m training for my first 50-miler and I’m terrified that I won’t finish within the cutoff. It’s a crazy mountain race with huge elevation gains and I’m afraid I’ll be too slow on the trail. But I’m trying my best and that’s all you can do, you know!
Have a great day!
Deborah Brooks says
ok wow that does sound like a crazy race! I can’t imagine running that far! Good luck to you and thanks for stopping by.
Jenn @ RunWithSole says
Thanks Deborah! And good luck to you too!
Sarah says
Oh I hope you are turning the corner on Plantar fasciitis! My friend got it over a year ago and had to take it easy, then started back training and it got worse! She has been out for over a year and still has problems when she occasionally swims, does spinning, or just walking in general. I feel so bad I could never imagine going from daily workouts to nothing for so long and being in such pain for daily activities. Until last week…. I hurt my back and serious sciatic nerve pain. I took 2 days rest and started to feel better Friday so I went to do a lighter workout and completely out on my back in pain only a couple minutes in and all weekend have been miserable and in pain. I should have listened to taking it easy and now hoping I’m not out for weeks like my husband was last year with back pain.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s really been quite a pain in butt! It’s starting to get better but wow is it hard to get rid of.
Sun says
What a fun idea – love the coffee break link up!
It sounds like you have been doing great with cross training while your foot heals up. All that spinning sounds like it will be really helpful for TRI racing this summer!
If we were having coffee, I’d probably ask about healthy lunch ideas. I’m always looking for new ideas 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I hope it does help with the tri! We’d love to to have you join the coffee date next month!
Jess @hellotofit says
Yay for your PF getting better! Hope it doesn’t come back 😉 If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’m loving the 30 days of yoga challenge – it’s gotten me out of my comfort zone and helped me fit in a little more yoga into my life.
Deborah Brooks says
I am glad it is getting better too. I am trying to add more yoga into my life as well. Headed to hot yoga now!
Kayla @ Blondes Have More Run says
Hey there! I’m visiting from BlogHop. I love your blog design – super cute!
Injuries from running suuuck. It’s so awful to be doing well and progressing and then you’re held back several months. I definitely know the feeling. I’ve had it happen to me before. Not fun. However, hot yoga and spinning don’t sound so bad 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks for stopping by! Yes it is hard when injury sets you back right when you think you are doing so well. Hot yoga and spinning are great too!
Safari says
way to keep moving while injured. Tri-ing is a great way to get your legs moving on the run. When I get off the bike…I can’t seem to slow my legs down. lol I love the “if we were having coffee” concept…if we were having coffee I would tell you that I am absolutely OVERWHELMED with EVERYTHING!!! whew!! I said it…now I just need to figure out how to grab a hold of everything. lol Wishing you a speedy recovery!!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! You should join our coffee date next month-it’s fun!
