Summer travel season is upon us! Air travel really is not what it used to be is it? With long security lines, frequent flight delays and smaller airline seats, it takes some prior planning to help make your flight as comfortable as possible. I have compiled a list of my must have travel essentials for long flights. Let’s take a peek in my travel bag.
Travel Essentials for Long Flights
I start off with a hanging cosmetic bag that can attach on the airplane door or in an airport bathroom. Inside I always have:
Things to keep me fresh and clean:
Earplugs and a sleeping mask
Chapstick
Makeup wipes
Moisturizer
Scrunci
Toothbrush and toothpaste
hand creme
Extra socks- I wear an old pair on the plane and ditch them
deodorant
Things to keep me comfy for over seas flights I throw in:
yoga pants or pj bottoms
clean pair of underwear
Things to keep me entertained:
laptop or ipad w downloads
headphones
notebook and pen
A good book
Things to snack on
nuts and bars

I have a little trip down south planned for next weekend! I’m a good weekend packer–all those weekends up to Wisconsin has made me good at bringing just what I need.
Deborah Brooks says
The weekend trips are good it’s the long flights where I want all of my comforts from home along for the ride
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
Maybe this makes me nosy but I love seeing what people pack with them for travel. It helps give me ideas! I always bring a book and headphones on flights. They are nonnegotiable in my opinion. I don’t do a ton of long flights but clean underwear is such a good idea and I can’t believe I never thought of that before.
Deborah Brooks says
Especially on a long flight, for me changing my underwear makes me feel clean 🙂

All these items I make sure I have as well. I also like to keep airborne and Emergen-C
Deborah Brooks says
It is good to have those along you never know!

I thought you forgot snacks! I always bring gum or mints, too – in case I can’t get up to brush my teeth. And an extra phone charger (in case of getting stranded like I did in Houston this week!)
People accuse me of bringing to many snacks and stuff in my backpack until they need them!!
Deborah Brooks says
I never forget snacks! God forbid I should be hungry for 5 minutes 🙂
Kim G says
That’s a really good idea about the hanging cosmetics bag! Luckily most of my flights are relatively short (under 3 hours) but I would definitely use that for a longer flight.
I’m what you call a minimalist packer, lol. Sometimes that gets me in trouble because I end up forgetting something, but usually its something minor I can buy at a store when I arrive at my destination.
Deborah Brooks says
I would never be accused of being a minimalist! 🙂

Great tips as always. Luckily I have no long trips planned, I don’t enjoy long traveling. My longest flight is the 3 hour plane ride home.
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t like long flights but we are going on a family adventure next week and I have a bunch of them in my future. All good though!
Coco says
A big shawl or small blanket — planes can be freezing! A fully loaded and fully charged iPad is essential these days. Make sure you have the airline app download to watch movies.
Happy travels!
Deborah Brooks says
I usually bring a hoodie that I double as a blanket or a pillow. Hoping they are handing out pillows for this flight

I’m travelling in a month (16 h flight) so this is so useful! Btw, great headphones, what’s the brand?
Deborah Brooks says
These are Aftershokz they are fantastic and sit on your cheekbones. Safe travels!

My summer travel (Atlanta, Michigan) pales in comparison to where I’ve gone this spring. Ummmm I bring Chapstick. And maybe a neck pillow. 😛
Deborah Brooks says
You are low maintenance!
Kimberly Hatting says
I always bring an old-fashioned notebook & pen. I hate typing on my phone (even if I have the hubby’s laptop or IPad, it’s too bumpy). I have written a lot of blog posts (& planned out many more) via an airplane ride. I bring my own snacks, too & lotion because my skin is so dry.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I agree I have written many a post on the plane as well!
Abbey Sharp says
Girl, I am in the same boat as you! Total overpacker, but if someone needs something, I’ve got it lol. Love your essentials.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Sadly no travel plans. I’m always prepared too. 🙂 Food is definitely an essential, although I stick to my quart baggie for makeup (and contacts, etc), so there’s not a whole lot in there.
If it’s summer, though, Sunscreen is a must. Which often means a checked bag.
My Kindle. My Ipad (with movies already downloaded, yes).
PJs & usually a change of clothes (because you just never know). Sunglesses. An umbrella depending on the destination (remember my inlaws are near Seattle). My glasses (most of the time I wear contacts). Sunglasses. Usually a scarf.
Deborah Brooks says
You are definitely prepared as well!
Marc Pelerin says
Nothing wrong with being prepared and being comfortable. I definitely carry a bit more than others to make sure I’m comfortable.
Deborah Brooks says
Have to be comfortable!

I use a pared-down version of your packing list. I don’t have any overseas trips coming up this summer, but in September, we are going to Spain to hike el Camino de Santiago. I usually either read or sleep on a plane.
Deborah Brooks says
Ooh that sounds like a cool adventure!
Cari says
ooh love that journal!
And this is in perfect time. No long flights this weekend but little things I need to find & remember like an eye mask
Deborah Brooks says
The eye mask is key!
Laura says
Great suggestions Deborah!
The eye mask and earplugs are such a good essential – something so important that I always forget when I’m packing for a flight! I’ll be sure to refer back to this post next time I’m packing 🙂 Thanks a lot!
Deborah Brooks says
The eye shades and ear plugs are my essentials!
