Summer brings all sorts of great things: warm weather, sunshine, blooming flowers just to name a few but summer can also bring mosquito bites. I can be with a whole group of people and be the only one getting bitten! Maybe it’s because I am so sweet? 🙂 I did a little research and discovered a few Tips To Avoid Mosquitoes While Exercising Outdoors.
Tips to Avoid Mosquitoes While Exercising Outdoors
I always thought that mosquitoes were attracted to sweat and that was why I got bitten while running or biking. After doing some very unscientific research I discovered that mosquitos are attracted to carbon dioxide. When we exercise, we expel carbon dioxide. How interesting huh?
Wear compression clothing
Mosquitoes have a harder time penetrating through tighter woven fabrics.
Wear lighter colored clothing while exercising
Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colors and you will also stay cooler in lighter colored clothing.
Avoid being outdoors at dusk or dawn
When the wind is usually lower (at dusk and dawn) mosquitoes are more prevalent. They apparently do not like to fly around when it’s windier.

Run away from ponds and lakes
Mosquitoes tend to hang out around standing water such as lakes/ponds. Avoid having any standing water around your house. check flower pots etc after rain storms.
Protect you skin
Mosquitoes are more likely to bite the thinner or unprotected areas such as ankles, wrists, elbows and knees. Those are the places that you want to make sure to protect with mosquito spray. (see natural remedies to ward off mosquitoes)

Spray it on
After applying sunscreen, apply bug spray to vulnerable areas (ankles, elbows, knees).
ARe you one of those people who always seems to get bitten? How do you ward off mosquito bites while having fun outdoors in the summertime?
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I needed this! For some reason as I’ve gotten older they love me more and more. The lighter colored clothing is probably big for me… I’m always in black!
Deborah Brooks says
I did not know about the lighter colored clothing either so much for the bright pink and purples 🙂
Annmarie says
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE TIPS! I legit have a fear of mosquitos and cannot stand to be bitten!
Deborah Brooks says
They can be so annoying!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
Kind of interesting, the mosquitos haven’t been that bad so far this summer. I don’t know if they are spraying or what. Pretty sure that’s all going to change after this humid spell we are having.
Stephanie @ Wholesome Paradise says
I could have used that spray when I lived in Hawaii. I used a lemongrass essential oil blend spray since mosquitoes don’t like the smell of lemongrass. But now that I live in Idaho I don’t have to worry about mosquitoes. It’s too dry for them here.
Deborah Brooks says
Well that’s a plus!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
If I’m in an area where I know there will be bugs, I suck it up and put the spray on! It’s just not worth the risk right now!
Deborah Brooks says
I know scary stuff out there!
