As I was lying in Savasana last week, I could not help but think about how much dirt and how many germs there must be on my mat. Yup not so namaste. Not to worry though, I found the easiest and most efficient way to clean a yoga mat and I had to share it with you.

Easiest and most efficient way to clean a yoga mat

So sure, I wipe my mat down with a disinfectant wipe after class and sometimes I even give it a secondary wipe at home. Even the cleanest yoga studio cannot possibly have time to mop and sterilize the floors between each class. That means, all of that sweat from your fellow yogis is on the floor right where you place your mat. Rolling up your mat after class then puts all those germs right into your mat.

What’s a yogi to do?

When you get home and hit the shower, take that yoga mat right in there with you. What? That’s right, take your yoga mat right into the shower with you. Lay it right down on the shower on bath tub floor. While you wash and clean yourself with shampoo and soap, your yoga mat gets a shower too.

Why didn’t I think of that? #CleanYogaMat #YogaTips #yoga #yogamat #namaste

Take a wash cloth and gently go over your mat. Rinse with clean water. Finally, hang your mat over the side of the shower door or bath tub and air dry. Within a few hours, your mat is sparkly clean and ready to go again for your down dog. I suggest doing this periodically to keep you and your mat germ free.

What a great idea! I’m really bad–I don’t clean my yoga mat enough. Of course, I’m not going to the studio lately so that’s not as bad.

What kind of mat do you have?

    • Deborah Brooks says

I have a lulu one and a Gaim one I alternate or sometimes use them both on top of each other. Better on my knees

A million years ago I gave $$ to a kickstarter for a yoga mt shower clip to hold your mat on the wall while you shower to clean it. The thing WAS amazing and broke two years ago to my hearts sadness, and I learned the company never made more than one batch but seriously the shower is where it is at for mat cleaning, as long as your soaps aren’t crazy harsh.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/20/2019 at 10:33 am

That is a great idea! I find it so easy and convenient to wash it that way

      Also a great idea!

    Thanks for the reminder 🙂

This is genius yet so simple! How didn’t I think of this before? I find that the wipes provided in my classes don’t seem to really work that well, either. I’m definitely going to start doing this from time to time – such a great idea!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/21/2019 at 3:01 pm

Thanks! I agree I never think the wipes really get the germs off

I’m not at all a germ-a-phobe, but especially since I’ve had others using my mat, I’ve thought about it. One of my teachers puts hers in the washing machine. Not kidding!

Most of the time at home I actually don’t use a mat, but obviously when I go to a studio I do.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/22/2019 at 12:59 pm

I was not sure if it could withstand a wash machine wash! Good to know
