As I was lying in Savasana last week, I could not help but think about how much dirt and how many germs there must be on my mat. Yup not so namaste. Not to worry though, I found the easiest and most efficient way to clean a yoga mat and I had to share it with you.
Easiest and most efficient way to clean a yoga mat
So sure, I wipe my mat down with a disinfectant wipe after class and sometimes I even give it a secondary wipe at home. Even the cleanest yoga studio cannot possibly have time to mop and sterilize the floors between each class. That means, all of that sweat from your fellow yogis is on the floor right where you place your mat. Rolling up your mat after class then puts all those germs right into your mat.
What’s a yogi to do?
When you get home and hit the shower, take that yoga mat right in there with you. What? That’s right, take your yoga mat right into the shower with you. Lay it right down on the shower on bath tub floor. While you wash and clean yourself with shampoo and soap, your yoga mat gets a shower too.
Take a wash cloth and gently go over your mat. Rinse with clean water. Finally, hang your mat over the side of the shower door or bath tub and air dry. Within a few hours, your mat is sparkly clean and ready to go again for your down dog. I suggest doing this periodically to keep you and your mat germ free.
Crazy easy way to clean a yoga mat, don’t you think? Tell me have you ever thought about how dirty your mat is? What do you think about my easy and efficient way to clean your mat? Namaste 🙂
This is a great idea! I’m embarrassed to think about how long its been since I cleaned my yoga mat. At least I only use it at home these days.
Even if you only use it at home, imagine how dirty it can be. 🙂
That really is so simple to do! Almost so simple that you wouldn’t think to clean it that way haha.
Yes exactly!
You’re supposed to clean them? LOL
Mine is getting dusty from lack of use.
ha ha you always make me smile 🙂
To be honest I never even thought about cleaning a yoga mat but thinking about how dirty they get It is a must! Great easy yoga mat hack Deborah!
They really can get rather gross!
Wow! Super smart idea! I need to do that!
It’s so easy!
What a great idea! I’m really bad–I don’t clean my yoga mat enough. Of course, I’m not going to the studio lately so that’s not as bad.
What kind of mat do you have?
I have a lulu one and a Gaim one I alternate or sometimes use them both on top of each other. Better on my knees

This is genius! Ive always thought about how rolling my matt at the end of a yoga class defeats the purpose of cleaning it in the first place. I am definitely going to try this easy cleaning method! Thanks for sharing
yes exactly hope it works for you too
Great idea! I use yoga mats with my fitness clients and carry wipes with me to wipe them off after each client and then spray them down when I get home. Never thought of putting it into the shower!
It’s so easy!
Great idea! I need to be more diligent about cleaning mine!
It’s super easy this way
I think it’s great — but then again, I’m not so good about cleaning my shower. So yeah, that wouldn’t work for me either! But it’s a brilliant idea!
ha well that’s a whole other blog post! 🙂
That’s suck a great idea! I use a mat for my boot camp class and often wonder about all the germs on it as well. I use wipes but this is a way more efficient way to clean it. Thanks for the idea.
Your welcome hope you give it a try
Your mat-cleaning strategy is great!! Genius!
Thanks my friend
That’s a great idea! I’ve put mine on the delicate cycle on my washing machine but this would kill two birds with one stone… and save water.
Love it!
thought about the washing machine but was not sure about the spin cycle
My yoga mat never leaves the house so i just wipe it down with a clorox wipe when it needs it!
Thanks for linking up!
Great!
What a great idea! I runfess I’ve never washed my yoga mat… ewwww…
We need to change that asap 🙂
Great idea! Since my after-yoga shower usually is at the office gym, I’m not sure the showers are any cleaner, but I should do this at home.
At home for sure! Those CP classes are pretty sweaty
This is a great idea! I am going to take mine in the shower with me today!!
Fantastic!
WOW this is crazy good idea 😀 I always clean my yoga mat on my balcony with soup and warm water in a bucket but it gets so messy and I never get the soup out the mat properly. So frustrating. I’m so going to try your method. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks I hope it works out a little better for you! No mess
That is so smart! I usually wipe my mat down (front and back) but I am sure it still has nasty germs on it! The thought freaks me out!
Thanks for sharing!
Freaks me out too! This really works though and no mess
Brilliant. Nothing short of brilliant. Next time I hop in the shower, my mat is going with me.
Ha hope you both enjoy! Thanks 😊
hahaha, that’s so smart! I do nottt know why I didn’t think of that, but that’s gonna be happening tonight!
Yup…the underside gets just as gunky (probably more!) as the topside. Great idea!!
It sure does get pretty sweaty and germy
What a good idea! I would never have thought of taking it in to the shower with me.
So easy try it!
A million years ago I gave $$ to a kickstarter for a yoga mt shower clip to hold your mat on the wall while you shower to clean it. The thing WAS amazing and broke two years ago to my hearts sadness, and I learned the company never made more than one batch but seriously the shower is where it is at for mat cleaning, as long as your soaps aren’t crazy harsh.
That is a great idea! I find it so easy and convenient to wash it that way
Thanks for these tips. I really need to clean my yoga mat so this is very helpful!
Great hope you try it out sometime it’s super easy
Great idea! I occasionally do that with my gym clothes if I exercise on holiday, saves having to pack too many clothes.
Also a great idea!
Great tips to clean a yoga mat! Will pass along to my yogi friends.
Thanks!
This is such a great idea (and yay for saving water! 😛 )! I’m definitely gonna have to start doing this!
It is life changing 🙂
I don’t want to think about how nasty my mat is!
I use my wipes after classes, but I know my mat could use a good cleaning as well as my yoga bag!
Thanks for the reminder 🙂
You are very welcome! It is so easy to do
This is genius yet so simple! How didn’t I think of this before? I find that the wipes provided in my classes don’t seem to really work that well, either. I’m definitely going to start doing this from time to time – such a great idea!
Thanks! I agree I never think the wipes really get the germs off
I’ve always just used a clorox wipe to wipe down my mat. But to be honest, I still have’t wiped down my mat since last Monday’s yoga class…lol -M
ha I know it’s easy to put it off!
I am just getting back in to yoga! This is a great way to clean the mat!
It’s so easy hope you try it out
I’m not at all a germ-a-phobe, but especially since I’ve had others using my mat, I’ve thought about it. One of my teachers puts hers in the washing machine. Not kidding!
Most of the time at home I actually don’t use a mat, but obviously when I go to a studio I do.
I was not sure if it could withstand a wash machine wash! Good to know
