Confession…Ok I admit it-I am seriously high maintenance about my hair. I religiously schedule my hair appointments every 7 weeks and even have taken a few selfies with my hair guy. LOl.
I’ve always felt that my hair was an extension of my personality. Having a “good hair day” can have just as much of an impact as a “bad hair day” –am I right? So obviously taking care of my hair in the Summer months is essential. Here are a few of my Summer Hair Care tips.
1. Chlorine Care- I love to swim but do not love chlorine in my hair. Before jumping into the pool, I wet my hair with clean water and then comb in a thick conditioner before donning my swim cap. It won’t keep all the water out but will protect it from absorbing as much.
2. Sunscreen-We pay lots of attention to putting sunscreen on our bodies but often neglect our hair. The sun can do lots of damage to our scalp and hair especially if it’s colored. Yup not my real hair color! You can easily spray sunscreen into your hands and then run your fingers through your hair.
3. Lay off the heat-The extra heat from hair dryers and flat irons can really do a number of summer hair. If you can let it dry naturally a few times a week, your hair will thank you.
4. Loosen Up- Take care when putting your hair into elastic bands for your workouts. Yanking them out can break hair strands. Instead gently remove to protect your strands.
5. Choose wisely-There are lots of hair products out there and it’s important to read the labels to avoid extra chemicals. Many shampoos and conditioners have added vitamins and minerals to strengthen hair at the roots. Good hair products don’t have to be ridiculously expensive.
Which brings me to my Summer Hair Care Giveaway!
Puritan’s Pride generously sent me this basket of Hair Care Essentials. I’ve tested them all out and I will be sharing them all with you.
What’s inside?
Coconut Oil Shampoo & Conditioner-This blend just oozes summer. The coconut smell is divine and it left my hair smelling like the beach and feeling clean.
Biotin Shampoo & Conditioner – With a clean fresh scent this shampoo & conditioner with added Vitamin E, Panthenol & Lecithin left my hair feeling silky and smooth. Using them on colored hair was not a problem.
Moroccan Argan Oil– With essential fatty acids and vitamin E a drop of this oil added to the ends of hair conditions without causing greasiness. A put a small amount in my hands at gently brush through my hair to give it a little shine and calm the fly away strands. Can also be used on your skin.
Coconut Oil- Amazing smelling moisturizer for skin and hair. I love to use it on my elbows.
Biotin- Known for promoting skin, hair and nail health & growth. I have not personally tried these. I think if my hair grew any faster I’d have to shave my legs 2x a day!

What Hair Care Tips do you have? High or Low Maintenance Hair?

I love this!
You know, I totally took you up on your tip for using coconut oil in my hair – love it!
I put a good amount in and sleep with it overnight. Wash in the morning and it is so soft and bouncy.
I would say my hair is somewhere in between high and low maintenance. I try to condition it a good amount and I love the days where I wash it and dry it naturally. Summer is a great time for that.
Did not know about the sunscreen in your hair – awesome!
Tips? Another thing that I love is to put olive oil in my hair at night and wash the next day. Really gives my hair shine and moisture.
I get a trim every 8 weeks or so.
Love your selfie with your hair stylist!
Deborah Brooks says
I’ve never tried olive oil in my hair. Wonder if it would be too greasy for mine? I may check it out. Thanks for entering.
Mary Beth Jackson says

Deborah, the selfie with your hair guy! Love it. You are good about your hair before swimming. So glad you love the products 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I do! Always a little high maintenance on the hair and it’s always fun to try new products
Annmarie says
I am usually pretty lazy with my hair unless I am going out on the town. I had no idea you could put sunscreen in your hair though, great tip! Going to do that now that I will be running outside more! Hope you have a great weekend 🙂
Annmarie says
Ps. The Puritan’s Pride FB link in the rafflecopter widget isn’t working 🙁 Just wanted to give you a heads up! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
oh thanks I will check it now
Deborah Brooks says
yes you can put sunscreen on your hair and it really protects the color (not that either of us do that!)
steph says
I try to limit how often I wash my hair. But summer running makes that difficult 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
It does doesn’t it! Thanks for entering 🙂
Amanda Sakovitz says
I use a leave in argan hair oil so my hair isnt as dry
Deborah Brooks says
That works too! I should leave it in more often. Thanks for stopping by and entering good luck
Jen says
Such great tips. I’ve been in such a hair funk lately. I’ve got a short pixie cut – have had it for years – and sometimes there is just nothing to do with it but the same ole’ thing. I’ve been debating on growing it out. Yours is so beautiful!
Deborah Brooks says
Well thank you so much! Sometimes I just walk in and tell my guy to do whatever he wants. Sometimes a little color change or some highlights can really make a big difference. Try something new it may help you like it more!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I have very frizzy hair, and it gets so much worse in the summer with all of the highly humid days. But this care basket sounds like it would be a great way to help me tame my mane.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
As for a tip, I 100% agree with letting your hair air dry a couple of times a week. Its a pain in the butt, but it definitely helps.
Deborah Brooks says
It does help to save your hair every once in a while by not drying it. Our humid summers are not good for hair! Thanks for entering!
Michelle C says
I need better hair care tips. As a mommy of a 2 soon to be 3 year old, I am lucky to get it washed and combed out in the morning LOL! I have very fine, limp hair so try to use shampoos and conditioners that don’t weigh it down. So far I like the Aveeno products the best but when I have extra money, I like to get a bottle of PUREOLOGY.
Deborah Brooks says
Hair care is more challenging when your kids are younger isn’t it? I remember those days! Thanks for entering and good luck
Ruth C says
I have used the Olive Oil as well as fresh avocado.
Great Giveaway
Deborah Brooks says
ooh I love avocado. Thanks for entering
Stephanie says
I am pretty low maintenance with my hair, I used to keep it short but now that it is long enough to go up in a cute bun I will keep growing it 🙂 I use minimal heat on my hair but I do like to make it cute with some curls on the weekends!
Deborah Brooks says
Curls are good too! Thanks for entering
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
oooo!!! Totally entering! When I was in high school, I hated my curls and would straighten it every day, but now I’ve learned to embrace my curls and let the lion be free haha. It’s much better for my hair to just let it dry naturally and not put a lot of product or heat on it. If I’m having a bad hair day, I just throw it in a braid and call it a day. I’ve never put sunscreen in my hair, though. I should try that!
Deborah Brooks says
I love your hair! Thanks for entering it’s a nice giveaway basket.
Smitha @ www.runningwithsdmom.com says
I love the tip about combing in a conditioner before the swim cap goes on. Works as a water repellant! Brilliant! Don’t forget to link up your giveaway to our Wednesday roundup!
Deborah Brooks says
The conditioner before a swim saves my hair! Oh forgot I could link it up!
Ange @ Cowgirl Runs says
I waver between high and low maintenance with my hair. I have lower maintenance colour so I only need to do that every 16 weeks or so (and saves money!) but I’m sure to pick good quality shampoo and conditioners to keep it pretty between appointments.
Deborah Brooks says
Your hair does look cute in your pics! thanks for entering
Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says
I’m pretty good about laying off the heat styling products. But I honestly never thought about putting sunscreen in my hair.
That’s a great tip!
Deborah Brooks says
It works!
Kristen M says
I’m desperately lacking in hair care tips. My strategy has been to keep my hair short, or have a pony tail holder with me at all times. I’ve recently started swimming though, and realize that I’m going to have to give my hair some extra tlc this summer. A swim cap would also be helpful.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh yes a swim cap is a must. The chlorine is really bad for your hair. Thanks for entering and good luck
Jenn says
Sooooo low maintenance. I am not good at hair. Sometimes I will take the time with it, but usually, I toss it up in a high pony and call it good.
Deborah Brooks says
Hey if it works for you!
Jess @hellotofit says
I’ve started to use a serum for my hair : bumble and bumble hairdresser’s invisible oil; it’s GREAT! And smells good 🙂 Good tip about putting sunscreen onto hair. I never think to do that.
Deborah Brooks says
I know I forget sometimes too but it’s a really good idea!
Tara @ A Daily Dose of Fit says
I am THE WORST about putting sunscreen on my scalp, so inevitably, my part gets burned. Ugh. So stupid. At least I hardly ever dry my hair…perk of the gym job, don’t have to be fancy!
Deborah Brooks says
I am bad about it too but trying harder now! Thanks for entering
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I have to admit that I”m pretty high maintenance about my hair. I color every 4 weeks–not for a luxury but maintenance. Sadly, I’m pretty gray. I use pureology now. I used to use Aveda, but seems like pureology works well for my hair.
Deborah Brooks says
Nothing wrong with being high maintenance! Takes one to know one.
Ken C says
I shave my head but would like to win this for my wife who ahs beautiful hair.
Deborah Brooks says
Lol that would be nice for her. Thanks for stopping in
Sandra Laflamme says
Your hair is gorgeous! I love the tip about putting conditioner in before the swim cap. I hate chlorine hair so will have to try this! I have to admit I could do a much better job of caring for my hair. I have finally gotten back to a regular 7-8 week haircut schedule.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh you have to try the conditioner before a swim. If I don’t do it I am a tangly mess!
Artney @ My Pretty Brown says
You have fabulous hair! Love the selfie! I use coconut oil to deep condition my hair/curls!
Deborah Brooks says
It really works doesn’t it?!
kelly tupick says
I always condition my hair but never thought of using sunscreen in my hair. My best tip is if you going to be in the sun for the day, wear a baseball cap to protect the top of you head and your hair.
Deborah Brooks says
Sunscreen in your hair really works of course a cap is great too! Thanks for entering and good luck. Hope to see you again
Toni says
i have no hair care tips I pretty much wash and go!
Deborah Brooks says
Well that’s easy!
Jen@jpabstfitness says
Total low maintenance here, pretty much wash and go.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s easy! Thanks for entering 🙂
Mary says
I have had stages of high and low maintenance. I am currently in a low phase. I used to use Suave for years. I had been hearing how this brand dries your hair out. I never thought it was true until I finally switched and used a fancy new shampoo. What a difference after one wash. It was crazy!! Now I don’t use any Suave. It was drying my skin (body wash) too. One thing I don’t do it blow dry unless it’s really freezing out. And even then it’s just to get the dampness out before running out the door.
Your hair always looks great. I love the color too. Your hair guy is a hottie too 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Ah thanks! If I don’t dry my hair it’s kind of a wavy mess but I try in the summer not to as much. Yes he is a cutie!
Karrie says
I use coconut in my hair once a week..I slather it all on and cover it for the night..its Keeps my hair from getting to dry from all the coloring i do to it
Deborah Brooks says
Great idea to do it every week. Thanks for stopping by and entering. Good luck
jill conyers says
My hair care tip is to not wash your hair everyday (unless of course you swim in a pool everyday. ) My daughter and I have been noticed a difference.
Deborah Brooks says
I know good tip but hard to do!
Katie @ Huff 'n Puff to Buff 'n Tough says
I am high maintenance when it comes to my hair. There have been years where I have been extremely lazy about my hair care like during my pregnancy because I was too tired to do anything, but for the most part I am high maintenance with my hair. I use Victoria’s Secret hair care line. I LOVE what it does for my hair, but because I am of mixed race, I had my doubts about their line and what it could do for my hair, but I am glad I decided to give it a try and was not disappointed.
Deborah Brooks says
I’ve never tried their hair products before! Thanks for the tip. Good luck with the raffle
MannaB says
I’ve found that castor oil works as a good treatment for moisture and shine!
Deborah Brooks says
Interesting! I did not know that but makes sense. Thanks for stopping by and entering. Hope to see you again.
Meghan says
I’m just catching up to this from last Friday, but just wanted to say that these products look awesome! I’m so glad you mentioned sunblock being needed on your scalp and hair…it’s so true that it’s often overlooked, but it’s really important to get it. Hope you’re having a fabulous MDW!
Deborah Brooks says
I always forget to use it too but I am going to try harder this summer!
Jill says
I think regular trims are very important for hair maintenance.
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely! Thanks for entering the raffle 🙂
Akaleistar says
What an awesome giveaway! I try to use heat as little as possible on my hair and go very light on the brushing 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Me too but it’s hard sometimes isn’t it! thanks for entering 🙂
Caroline M says
I definitely don’t feel at all qualified to be giving hair care tips…I barely do anything to my hair ever! But I avoid washing my hair too often, and I almost always let it air dry. Trying to avoid heat damage…and also using it as an excuse to never style my hair 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Avoiding heat when you can certainly helps! Thanks for entering.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
I’m pretty high maintenance too. I don’t color, but I keep up with cuts, gloss and use a plethora of products to either blow it out our try to make it look decent air dry… more challenging than it sounds. I’d love to try these products b/c the ones I use now are pricey! Love them though.
Deborah Brooks says
Ha that comes as no surprise to me!! I can tell by looking at all your pics. LOL It’s a good thing in my book 🙂
Sam @ PancakeWarriors says
I have never had a great relationship with my hair lol! I love it long but it doesn’t want to grow past a certain length – ugh! I think eating lots of avocado has been helping though!
Safari @ Tri-ing To Run Boston says
OMG I am SO low maintenance! I really need to do better with taking care of my hair…especially with all the swimming I do. I just really don’t care. I keep asking my husband to cut it off again…loved it short. Apparently he did not! lol
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha! Yes chlorine can do a number on our hair-take care!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Love your selfie with your hair guy! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
ha thanks!
GiselleR @ Diary of an ExSloth says
Awesome tips! I had some issues with my hair over winter because it got really dry and brittle, so I’m slowly rehabbing it with natural products. It takes work though, so prevention is definitely the way to go.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes healthy hair takes work too!
