Where did July Go?

I Runfess…Every summer I ask myself, why I am running in this heat and humidity? Every summer I go back and keep doing it. Has it always been this hard or has it gotten harder with age? I also Runfess that some days I really don’t enjoy  it. Just because you are a runner doesn’t mean you have to love every run right?

where did July go?

I Runfess…I have been doing a fair amount of walking on some of my runs and I am okay with that. In the past, I think this would have really bothered me but I am content (for now) with just getting the miles in and keeping my fitness up. There will be lots of work to do in the fall.

I Runfess…I am looking ahead to some racecation runs for winter and spring. I do love having big races on my schedule to keep me on a training plan once things cool down. I did not get into the London half unfortunately however, New Orleans and Virginia Beach are on the plan. Where else should I go?

I “Runfess” kind of over summer running-how about you? What do you #Runfess

I Runfess… July running was not all bad. We did make the most of the sweaty days with our July 4th run into Dc, our iced tea crawl run and our 7-11 slurpee run.

I Runfess…I am enjoying all of the other outdoor activities that summer has to offer from biking to swimming to SUP. We had another SUP class last night and it’s quickly becoming my summer fave.

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Lots of walking on my summer runs too. I’m ok.

    I really want a SUP.

    Come to NYC.

I am ok w the walking too. It will all come back in the fall. Loving the SUP. I would love to do a race in NY maybe a 10k or a half. Have to look. I’ve tried to get into the NYC half w no luck

Your SUP pictures look so fun! It’s crazy how amazing our weather is this week after being so wretched last week. Run while it’s nice!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 8:17 am

Yes it’s definitely a little better than last week. Still too hot for long runs for me.

Your SUP looks like so much fun! I want to give it a try!!! I walk on most of my runs too and don’t feel bad about it at all. It just gives me a little mental break that I can look forward to.

Your winter/spring races sound cool. Lots of great half marathons in Florida in the winter. I think I must start looking and planning too.

Let me know which ones you sign up for. I am still looking around for fun ones maybe next fall

I’m sorry about London, but NOLA and Virginia Beach are great consolation prizes. I’m just beginning to think about a late fall half . . . . somewhere. Not sure where.

There are definitely runs in the summer I don’t enjoy, but since I’m not in training, I find that most of them are pretty good.

I don’t know why, but there’s something about SUP (the one time I did it) that really scared me. Silly, but I guess I really just don’t like tippy things: didn’t like small sailboats, didn’t like rowing because the boats are so tippy. Not sure what it is about that. I know everyone else seems to adore it!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 8:19 am

I feel so relaxed on the SUP something about the rowing is relaxing and tranquil to me. I am not scared at all in a lake bc there is no current or anything. Not sure it would go so well in a ocean

You know how much I love SUP! I’m going to head out shortly on mine. We have to find alternative activities to keep moving in the heat.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 8:20 am

We do! I am loving SUP and cycling and even long walks. Long runs will be there in the fall right?

I’m sorry you didn’t get into the London half. I’ve heard great things about the Virginia Beach one, assuming you’re talking about the one that’s St. Patrick’s Day weekend that is.

I runfess I feel like I’m just now starting to deal with summer heat and humidity since I wasn’t running for so long. Crossing my fingers it makes fall races that much easier for everyone!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 11:22 am

Yes it is near St Pat’s day in Va Beach should be lots of fun. A big group of us will go down. I sure hope training this summer makes fall running easier too!

  7. Marcia says

    07/26/2019 at 8:48 am

I runfess I think this is the first year I totally am not stressing about running in the heat. If it’s too hot I do something else or hit the mill. Sorry about the London Half. Maybe that one’s just as hard to get into as the full marathon. See you next week for coffee!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 11:27 am

Yes I am actually ok with my low run mileage this summer too. I am enjoying doing so many other summer activities. All will be good in the fall 🙂

Sounds like you’re making the most of the Summer! I’ve been walking a lot too and like you said, I’m ok with that. Miles are miles. I’ve got to find somewhere locally to do SUP. I tried it once on vacation and enjoyed it but have never tried it again.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 11:28 am

You can rent the SUP boards in Georgetown at Fletcher’s and Thompson’s boat house. We also go out in Reston

The London half would have been so neat! I runfess that my body is slowly remembering how to run over an hour 🙂 Since postpartum, I have only done a handful of long runs and now that I’m training for a marathon again, it’s taking some time to adjust. Have a great weekend!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 12:21 pm

That is completely normal! I have not run over an hour since it got so hot. It will feel like starting all over for me in the fall

  10. Cari says

    Mmm New Orleans.
I want to do Myrtle Beach but haven’t looked at the dates. I need a March option though.
Heat has been weird for me — easier now that I’m slimmer, but harder since I’m older.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 4:39 pm

It is harder since I am older too to run in the heat. I am also the Shamrock in Va Beach in March. It’s supposed to be good and nice and flat

      • Cari says

        07/26/2019 at 7:23 pm

Ooh Virginia Beach – I’ve heard that’s a pretty area in general. Must investigate

I have not been in years! A bunch of us are heading down though

  11. Kimberly Hatting says

    07/26/2019 at 5:41 pm

Even if you’re not running as much, you are active everyday. I think it’s great that you’re doing what you enjoy and not forcing the stuff that’s less joyful 🙂 chin up!!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/26/2019 at 8:34 pm

You know I am actually ok with running less miles right now. Fall running will be here soon!

I miss my summer outdoor acitivities: swimming, biking and paddling. Glad you have fun on doing them.
Running and walking is a very good strategy in summer. Better not to stress our body (I did it and now I pay the price).
Sorry for London. Here I suggest 2 very good half in Italy (I entered both): Roma-Ostia (march) and the Tour of the Orbetello lagoon (april). The fist is very fast and participated the second totally flat with a wonderful scenic landscape.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/27/2019 at 3:47 pm

Oooh Italy is one of my favorite places!

Love all your additional activities, that’s brilliant. I want to get some tennis back in my life some time.

And I always walk more in the summer heat – I’d rather be well than zonked for the rest of the day, for a start!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/27/2019 at 3:51 pm

I played tennis as a kid but have not tried in a number of years. That would be another fun summer activity
