Traveling this holiday season? On hold are the days when it was easy to pop into a local gym or studio for a workout. Fitness, however, does not have to go on hold if you are traveling this year. I’ve got ideas for practical fitness gear that easily travels with you.
Practical Fitness Gear that easily travels with you
In normal times (remember those?), traveling would present a whole slew of fitness opportunities. Popping into a trendy yoga or spin class in a new city was always a favorite of mine. Alas, 2020 threw a wrench in so many activities. If you are traveling this holiday season, fitness does not have to take a backseat. With some planning, it’s quite easy to bring some great fitness gear with you.
Travel Yoga Mat
A great packable yoga mat is always helpful to have in your travel bag. Perfect for core work, yoga, strength training and stretching. This one folds right up into its own travel bag.
Resistance Bands
The possibilities for strength training exercises with resistance bands are endless. I prefer to use the smaller looped bands for hip and glutes work. A set of bands is inexpensive and easy to throw into your bag. The longer bands with padded handles are perfect for upper body exercises including rows and lat pull downs. They can be secured to door frames or large pieces of furniture. I even take them outside when traveling.
Jump Rope
Probably the most underrated piece of equipment. Get a fantastic cardio workout with just a few minutes of jump roping. It’s a lot harder than you remember. Check out my Full Body Jump Rope Rope Workout here. I like a weighted jump rope for a smoother feel.
Peloton App
If you have not hopped onto the Peloton platform yet, run don’t walk to sign up. From guided outdoor running and walking classes, to bootcamps, core and strength training classes, the fit possibilities are endless. Many classes use bodyweight alone and don’t require any other equipment.
With so many streaming fitness classes available now, it is more convenient than ever to take your favorite fitness classes along with you on the road. What’s your must have fitness Gear travel item? How will you stay fit while traveling this year?

I usually travel with a small foam roller (the original worm is great).I’ve even been known to take my Trigger Point Grid because it’s hollow in the center and I can put stuff in there. Definitely always have resistance bands with you!
Deborah Brooks says
If I can fit it my foam roller is coming too!
Maureen says
I love my resistance bands. So easy to throw into a bag and they are effective as well. A travel yoga mat is so smart! Will need to look at that
Deborah Brooks says
I am excited to have the travel yoga mat this time

Oh, if only I were planning to travel this holiday season. One of my favorite traveling/fitness memories is when I stayed in a swanky hotel in Denver using points I had saved up and took a yoga class in their deluxe studio for free! OK, I guess I sound cheap, but it really was great. I love the idea of a travel yoga mat.
Deborah Brooks says
I love to take studio classes at trendy places when traveling but alas, it will be a while before that happens again

These are awesome options! I’ve been looking for some new resistance bands (whatever brand I bought off Amazon last time – they all snapped within days), so I’ll definitely have to check your suggestions out. Thanks for sharing!
Deborah Brooks says
They are always great to have at home and for travel

I have taken my resistance bends with me as well. I’ve never been a hotel gym-user, but usually can find places to run or do body weight resistance work in my hotel room. And of course, I can always find a staircase!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I may have to find myself some stairs to use 🙂

Yay! These are all great idea! I’m not gonna be traveling anytime soon, but I’m all for streaming fitness classes these days! Gonna have to remember to bring a jump rope. :]!
Deborah Brooks says
a jump rope is always a great option

The Peloton app sounds great! I haven’t jumped rope in forever, but that’s such a great idea.
Deborah Brooks says
The Peloton app has been a lifesaver this year!

I love the idea of a jump rope. Reminds me when I was little playing at recess.
Deborah Brooks says
It is a great piece of equipment to have

I have a half-size foam roller that I take on longer trips if I can. If not, a lacrosse ball can always be squeezed in somewhere. I did bodyweight workouts from the Peloton app in my hotel room, and they definitely were a good workout!
Deborah Brooks says
I hope I can fit my foam roller in as well!

I usually tell my students to bring their own tools when traveling, or simply follow the program I gave them a very simple method without using any equipment. But today’s crisis is really sad that it loses some interest to others especially it too hard to wear a mask while doing your routine.
Deborah Brooks says
This is very true!

Great idea, Deborah! Bands and tubes are the bomb for traveling! I keep dumbbells at the beach house and my Mom’s house, but I always take bands and tubes to compliment them for a better workout.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it definitely helps to have your gear along with you

The bands are my favorite piece to bring when I travel, they are so portable and take up very little room. Can you believe I use to travel with my full size foam roller? I actually bought my sister a travel foam roller, I wonder if she ever uses it? -M
Deborah Brooks says
I have a travel size foam roller as well which I am now kicking myself for not bringing along
