If packing regular clothes was not overwhelming enough, it can be daunting to pack all the gear you need for summer running at your destination. While we don’t have to pack lots of layers and gloves, packing for summer running adventures has its own list of must-haves. Check out how my essentials and how to pack all your run gear for summer travel.
Summer run essentials for traveling
Whoever said that you don’t need any equipment to run was definitely mistaken. Summer running while traveling does require some planning and organizing. Here are my essentials for summer running on vacation.
While it might look like a big heap of clothing and gear, I have an organizational strategy that works. Let me share it with you. Here is how I fit all of my run gear easily into my hydration pack.

Wow, that’s clever packing! I especially like you wrapped the rain jacket in a tiny parcel.
The only thing that I would add to my list (because I always forget them) are hairbands. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
good idea I keep those in my travel bag at all times I always lose them

Great list! I also bring my road ID, Koala clip, and personal alarm.
Deborah Brooks says
I have my road ID attached to my Garmin at all times. One of the things I love about this pack is that my phone fits right in there too!
Kimberly Hatting says
I’d also include RoadID and Koala Clip…and, of course, lipstick!
Deborah Brooks says
I did have the lip balm in there No need for a Koala clip bc my phone fits right in!
Jenny says
Great video! This is great to know since I have that same pack. I would reply to Kim and Lisa that you don’t need a koala clip- your phone can go in the hydration pack while you run (although it is a little hard to get it out easily.)
Deborah Brooks says
yes exactly! I stick my phone in too

Most of my vacations lately I haven’t run — even with the bare minimum, just the running shoes take up a lot of space! I’m ok with taking the occasional break. Never seems to hurt my running. Although it helps not to be training for something. 🙂

I’ve become a pro with packing–I stuff things in my shoes and water bottle, lol! Great tips!
Deborah Brooks says
yes, it takes some practice but nice to have a routine
Jenn says
Perfect. I’ll be putting this into practice next week!
Deborah Brooks says
great hope you have a nice trip!

Summer running when traveling does require some planning! I do find it easier than packing in the cold weather though. Usually I don’t do long runs while I travel so that cuts down on some of the things I need to bring.
Deborah Brooks says
I seem to need the same amount of gear whether it’s short or long!
Darlene S. Cardillo says
I do want Wendy said. I stuff my shoes. And my spibelt.
But my suitcase still is filled with running stuff. I always make time to run on vacation even if it’s just short and quick. It’s important for me to stay consistent even if I’m not training for a race.
Deborah Brooks says
agreed!
Jenny says
Okay, i’ll use your list when I take my daughter to camp next week. I’ll only be gone one night but I want to do a trail run while I’m there so I need all the gear! i love the video of you packing everything into your hydration vest- yes, those Orange Mud vests have a lot of neat pockets and compartments.
Deborah Brooks says
it sure does hold a lot of stuff!
Jenn says
Oh, I love me a good packing checklist! My running clothes are always the first things packed!
Deborah Brooks says
mine too and they seem to take up the most space!

Although summer running is much lighter than winter running, it’s easy to forget things like suncream. In Switzerland, we can get tiny bottles that are perfect for taking with you on a long run.
And I always panic about forgetting the charger! Great list!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I have learned how important sunscreen is!
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I try to just bring the basics for running when I travel, but it does take up some space! I put lots of small things in my shoes. And since I usually don’t do long runs or hard workouts when i travel I don’t bring a hydration pack or bottle (if anything just my flipbelt bottle) If I need something for post run I’ll bring a lax ball to save space instead of packing a huge foam roller.
Deborah Brooks says
Stuffing thing in shoes is always a big help too!
Debbie says
That’s a great way to pack running gear. It really can take up so much room.
Deborah Brooks says
It sure can!
Kimberly Hatting says
Im actually flying out early Friday morning to see the North Carolina daughter. It’s only a 2-night stay, so I won’t need too much gear, but I’m definitely bringing a few necessities (and wearing the running shoes on the plane, LOL). Enjoy your trip!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks and you too! Have a fun time
Jenn says
I’m packing to go right now, and am making sure I have my running gear! I’ll only be doing shorter distances, so I’m more worried about tanks/shorts/socks/shoes/sunnies than anything else.
Deborah Brooks says
I like to have some sort of hydration pack with me. Hope you have a fun trip too
