It’s that time of the month again…October Runfessions. Love this fun monthly linkup where we are encouraged to spill all the thoughts and happenings of our running and fitness life. October ended up being a crazy, busy month for me that just flew by.
October Runfessions
I Runfess…
What a difference a season makes! Knock on some wood, I feel so much better about my running this month. The cooler temps have given me the boost I need. I have been able to slowly up my mileage again and I am back to around 20 miles a week again. I think I am going to hit 80 miles this month. So of course, I did what any crazy runner would do.
I Runfess…
Yup, I signed up for a ridiculous amount of races between now and January. Yes, I registered for that 15K I mentioned last week. I guess I have to start training for that one or just wing it? Hmmmm
I Runfess…
While usually a huge Halloween fan, I am just not feeling it this year. When my kids were younger, I took great pride in my Halloween decor around the house and always dressed up to hand out candy. I would also Runfess that I have not bought any candy yet because I know I will eat it if it’s sitting on my counter. Out of sight out of mind for sure. So I might be the lame house with no decorations. I am already planning my Thanksgiving decor and that is my favorite holiday of all.
I Runfess…
I have not biked or swam all month! After the summer tri season, I was ready to get back to running and needed a little break. I hope to get back to indoor cycling soon for the winter and pick back up my weekly swim class in December.
Those are my October Runfessions. Would love to hear yours-Do you vary your workouts season to season? Are you dressing up for Halloween?
Mark your calendars for The Ultimate Coffee Date next Saturday November 4th.

We are that lame house — and we also turn off all the lights & don’t give out candy. Wasn’t always that way, but has been since we moved to this house. Before we lived in a ranch; now it’s a raised ranch & it’s really just a pain going up & down the stairs to give out candy plus it just gets the dogs all worked up.
Wing the 15k. 🙂 Do some long runs, but otherwise just wing it! I’m still working on getting to my own; the logistics are a bit challenging this year.
Then hubs had to go and suggest another getaway the following week, when I wanted to do a 5k. Maybe I can squeeze it in before we leave. Did I mention it’s also the weekend before Thanksgiving & I host it? Maybe that’s a good thing.
Deborah Brooks says
I know so many races so little time!! We are hosting Thanksgiving too which I love but it’s a lot of work
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t bought candy yet!
Deborah Brooks says
Caved in and bought it last night Reeses-1 Deborah 0 ugh
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Luckily we do not have any trick or treaters because I live in a condo so therefore there is no need to buy any candy. I also am a big fan of Thanksgiving!
Deborah Brooks says
Nice way to dodge the candy bullet!
kim G says
I’m happy to hear that you are feeling better about running this month! It’s amazing how weather can really affect our running.
I’ve never really been a fan of Halloween, but I love handing out candy to all the kids and seeing their costumes, especially the babies and toddlers – so cute!
Deborah Brooks says
It is fun to see the little kids so excited but kind of glad mine are older now. Just have to stay away from the chocolate!
Debbie says
Every year I struggle with my running during the summer heat. Even though I know better, I feel discouraged because it is hard, I am so slow, etc. Every year, when the weather cools down I feel renewed. Thank goodness!
I try to buy candy the day before Halloween. Don’t want it hanging around the house!
Deborah Brooks says
I guess it’s easy to forget what a struggle it is in the summer and it’s always a happy reminder in the fall
Nicola @ Running Happy says
The 15k race sounds great, it’s not a distance you see that often in a race. My local club does an off road 15k race but I’ve not ran it – members are asked to volunteer instead.
Deborah Brooks says
It is a fun and unique distance I am excited to do it
Chaitali says
That 15k looks fun! I was thinking about it too. And I’ve been loving the cooler weather too 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Let me know if you sign up!
Coco says
You just made me realize I left my husb alone with all the Halloween candy — hope he hasn’t eaten it all! I’ve only done a few spinning classes since the century ride and this week has been all about OTF. Looking forward to Jingling with you!
Deborah Brooks says
I know I cannot be trusted with all the candy!!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
Halloween kind of snuck up on me this year. I think that is because I was so excited about Mom coming and then I had the injury issues, so my schedule has just been unfocused. Thanksgiving is a much bigger deal to me, anyway!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of all!
Marcia says
I no longer dress up for Halloween but my house is decked out. I do it in such a way that I can put away the skeletons/jack-o-lanterns and the gourds/pumpkins will stay for Thanksgiving. I can’t remember the last time I biked or swam. I’ll get back to my winter spin class one of these weeks! Thanks for linking!
Deborah Brooks says
I need to get on the Thanksgiving decorating. I will get back to my winter spin class soon too but right now I am enjoying being outside too
Lesley says
I haven’t decorated yet, but I will this weekend. It’s been so windy lately, I don’t want anything to blow away. I’m carving my pumpkin this weekend too.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s always fun! Enjoy
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
The cooler temps have improved my running as well! We are not dressing up for Halloween this year because our friends who throw a party are on vacation over Halloween. We’re bummed! Trick or Treat was last night in our ‘hood and we have lots of candy leftover…
Deborah Brooks says
That sounds fun! The left over candy just calls my name I cannot be trusted
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
I runfess that this is my favorite time of year to run too. It is finally cooling down and gives you that extra speed.
I hate that broken ankle recovery has me missing running and I runfess that I am counting days – 54 FYI since the break and the last time I ran.
Deborah Brooks says
Ugh being injured is the worst. You’ve had a tough year my friend!
HoHo Runs says
I haven’t been on my bike since my last Century. I know it’s great cross training. But… I did throw some Fall decorations out on the front porch which will stay there until it’s time for Christmas. I miss the fun Halloweens we had when the kids were little.
Deborah Brooks says
I miss the fun little kid hoopla around Halloween too
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I also have yet to figure out a Halloween costume… Not feeling it this year either.
Deborah Brooks says
No me either!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
You know, I haven’t given Halloween much thought either. Last year we had candy and only one family came to the house. Not sure if it’s worth trying something this year!
Glad to hear running is going well! I’ve yet to do a 15K race – sounds like a lot of fun!
Deborah Brooks says
The 15K does sound like fun-stay tuned for details
Erin says
Hi Deborah! Great post and really cute “runfessions” haha. I totally know what you mean by amping up mileage in this cooler weather and Thanksgiving is definitely a more fun holiday to prep for! Love your blog! https://hardshellblog.com/
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so much! Yes it is so much more pleasant around here for running in these cooler temps
Deborah Brooks says
Hi Erin- when I tried to comment back on your blog it said I was spam 🙁
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m not feeling the whole Halloween thing this year either. I’ve got to go buy candy this weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
Yep already starting eating it! UGh
Zenaida Arroyo says
I am not a big fan of Halloween either. Oh, and I don’t any candy except for me to eat it. 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
I always dress up for Halloween. Always. I mean, why not??? But, I don’t do much for Halloween decorations anymore. I have a few mums on my porch (well, technically, they’re inside right now due to the impending frost), and I might buy a pumpkin this weekend to carve. Or, I might not. I haven’t bought any candy yet, either…cuz that would be MY candy.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh the candy just calls my name!
Akaleistar says
I went to a Halloween party last night, but I might not dress up on the day. It’s been a crazy month, so I probably won’t be passing out candy either.
Deborah Brooks says
You always have the best costumes!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I’m not feeling Halloween either! It’s weird… probably because we’re flying out of the country tomorrow. People sure were celebrating last night though!
Deborah Brooks says
Have a fabulous trip!
Teresa says
I am right there with you on the Halloween topic. I loved going ‘all out’ when my boys were little, but it’s just not that much fun anymore. And yes, if I buy the candy too soon, I’ll gobble it all up causing me to truly ‘gobble and wobble’ on my Thanksgiving Turkey Trot! lol
I do love Thanksgiving as well and am already thinking about the menu and table decor! I love Fall!!!!
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha yes exactly those little candy bars speak to me as I walk by!
Laetitia says
I registered for the 15K too… I definitely need to start adding some miles to my weekly runs if I’m going to be run this (as opposed to run/walk it… my preferred method of running so far…)
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it’s quickly approaching! Hope I see you there
