Thanks for joining Kim and me for the weekly run down this week. It was another busy one around here. We are also heating back up going into July as expected. Heat adaptation in progress or is it? Here’s a peek into my week of fitness.
Heat Adaptation in Progress
Monday- barre + upper and lower body strength + core + Peloton cycle
Stack em up Monday! I am always eager to get my Monday workouts in especially after a weekend away. For me, it sets the tone of the day and the week. A little bit of everything today.
Tuesday- 5 ish mile tempo run + stretch + barre
I am determined to keep up my Tuesday Tempo runs throughout the summer despite the heat. I had 4 intervals on my schedule. I was able to hit my paces for the first 3 but the last one was longer and I was not quite on it. I am okay with that. I gave it my all and that humidity is not my friend.
When I finished my run, my Garmin gave me this nice update. So, I guess Garmin agrees with me that I am still in the heat adaptation phase. 19% phew! It is going to be a long, hot summer around here. This was a new update for me and not sure why it popped up. I am curious to monitor it over the next few weeks.
Wednesday- upper + lower body strength + core + barre
Heavy strength day over here. I do love finishing Workout Wednesday strong. It just feels good to lift heavy things Peloton style.
I hosted a small birthday party for a few of my running friends. It was really fun to all be together again.
Thursday- 5 mile run + stretch + core
Heat adaptation is still at 19%. It was another hot one out there today! I wonder what I have to do to get my watch to give me some bonus points?!
Friday- upper body strength + core + Peloton cycle low impact + short swim
I decided today was the day to add back in some lap swimming. I forgot how much I enjoy it although it does take more time and then the hair issues. This was obviously the before pic. Ha!
Saturday-4.5 mile run + 1 mile walk + stretch + barre
Well, that heat adaptation did not happen today! I was dying out there and ended up walking about a mile of my run. It is tough going out there with this intense humidity. It seems even more humid earlier in the day but the sun is less strong. What is a runner to do?
I also took out the big guns” my double barrel water pack and I was sure glad that I did. It has a super small profile so it does not make my back hot. You can find it here. Well worth the investment!
Sunday- Rest day + Peloton stretch
Rest day and some pool time.
Heat adaptation is going to take some time apparently! Just in time for fall I imagine. When is that again?
Wendy says
The heat is definitely on! I’m enjoying my runs in the shade of trails at trail pace. Part of me thinks that it’s really nice to ‘just run’ without pushing for a goal or anything. That part of me is growing. We’ll have to see how this plays out. Not a fan of lap swimming, but you know i do love the pool running!
Deborah Brooks says
It is nice to run just for the love of running sometimes. I need to pull out my fluid running this week too
Kimberly Hatting says
It got pretty hot & sticky here as the week wore on…Thursday night was at its peak. I had the “high humidity paradox” yesterday morning for my run. The 60F temps were nice (for running), but the humidity really took me by surprise! Great week of workouts, Deborah!
Deborah Brooks says
The humidity is just a killer for me but there is not much to do about it! I would still rather be outside so we push on
Darlene says
It sure I ever adapt to the heat. Luckily it’s not so bad up here.
I do have a nearby pool but haven’t ventured there yet. At the lake I just float around. My rest day.
Good luck with adapting. And enjoy your summer.
Deborah Brooks says
I am not sure I will ever “adapt” but should be interesting to monitor over the next few months
Melissa says
That heat acclimation function is really cool. Also, yay for swimming! Such a great workout.
Deborah Brooks says
It is an interesting and yet depressing metric 🙂
Coco says
What an interesting Garmin feature! Pool time seems like the best way to cope today.
How fun to celebrate MRTT birthdays!
Deborah Brooks says
It is an interesting and depressing feature of the watch 🙂
Liz Dexter says
What a fancy watch, telling you about your heat adaptation! And well done for pushing through on that but sensibly with your extra water. I’m hoping we don’t get too hot a summer this year …
Deborah Brooks says
I hope you don’t get too hot either!
Marcia says
My Garmin hasn’t given me any tidbits about heat adaption. Maybe my Fenix is too old?? Or I didn’t do an update?? Way to get out there and do your best, that’s really all you can do when conditions are sub-par.
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t remember setting up this feature but try looking on your Garmin app under training status and see if you see anything there.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I just tried to find how acclimated to the heat I am, but can’t… My running Garmin is pretty basic and even though it has a HR monitor, I don’t see anything. My bike Garmin is their top one, but I don’t wear the heart rate strap so it can’t gather that kind of data. I ended up going down a rabbit hole looking at all of my other stats, though. I love that kind of stuff!
Deborah Brooks says
Try looking on the Garmin app under training status and see if you see anything there. I fear I will never get adapted!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Yesterday I started using a heart rate monitor while riding and after today’s ride it said I was 8% acclimated to the heat. I guess it uses heart rate in factoring in the acclimation and of course I only have 2 days for it to draw from.
Deborah Brooks says
yes I think so but I am still skeptical on the accuracy of that
Cari says
19% is so oddly specific.
I think what makes it harder every summer is we carom back and forth from 70 to 85. There’s no way to acclimate even if we liked summer running
You probably know this already owning a pool, but conditioner on the hair before you swim makes it a lot less of a production after. Doesn’t work for a photo shoot but might help on the other end.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I used to use conditioner all the time when I was training for tri races and swimming more. Also, this is why I take the before pic not the after pic 🙂 Oddly specific indeed and a little depressing at the same time 🙂
Jessie says
Great mix of workouts Deb! I am so curious what the watch uses to determine that adaptation number.
Deborah Brooks says
Not quite sure but it does know the outside temp and my HR and pace so I am guessing a mix of that but no idea. Helpful and depressing at the same time
Chocolaterunsjudy says
It is definitely more humid in the morning! I agree on the time swimming takes (for me, include driving to a friend) — but I love it so much! Now to find time to squeeze it in.
Fun to celebrate birthdays! I wish my Garmin actually had that feature! We are not as humid here, thankfully.
Deborah Brooks says
It is the humidity that kills me! I am trying to play with the timing to try to find that sweet spot
Jenny says
Ha ha, yes, Janae from HungryRunnerGirl also said her Garmin is giving her heat acclimation updates suddenly. I’ll be curious to hear how long it takes, according to Garmin. Even if you’re slowing down for your last interval, you’re still getting the benefit from that run if you’re giving it everything you’ve got. I definitely have my eye on that double bottle hydration vest! I have the single one and it didn’t quite cut it for my trail run last week.
Anyway, think how easy fall running will feel once you’ve completed this heat acclimation!
Deborah Brooks says
I was so happy to have the double hydration pack the other day I ran out of the first bottle pretty quickly. I don’t find it to be much heavier and so worth it. Yes, I do believe I am still getting the benefits even if I don’t hit it exactly. Ah summer running…
Michelle says
That heat adaption is an interesting feature on your Garmin. I’m not sure I ever really adapt, but I’m just going to do my best to push through and not whine too much 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Oh I do not expect to ever adapt either but interesting info to have. I might whine just a little 🙂
Michele Heller says
Great workouts this week. All the Peloton rides are a great compliment to running and a great idea with the humidity right now. It’s no joke trying to run in this heat right now which is why I get up early. Good luck getting your watch to up the acclimation.
Deborah Brooks says
I am trying to get up earlier but it’s rough! I am on a mission to get that watch to work with me!
Jenn says
I wish my Garmin had the heat adaptation feature. It would just laugh and laugh at all of us. It’s just so hot and humid. Ugh.
Look like a fun week, and you had quite the variety of workouts! Great job!
Deborah Brooks says
well, my watch is laughing at me as well! I bet you are more acclimated to the heat than I am 🙂
Kim G says
You already know how I feel about Summer running. I’m just patiently waiting for September, lol. Very interesting about the heat acclimation updates from Garmin – I didn’t even know that was an option! Definitely a good option to have.
Awesome job on your workouts this week despite the heat and humidity!
Deborah Brooks says
I am now a mission to show that watch who is the boss around here!
