February Runfessions? I’ve got a few

It’s the last Friday of the month already! That means it’s time for the February Runfessions and the perfect time to get a few things off of my chest. Here’s a few completely unimportant  burning issues that are on my mind.

February Runfessions? I’ve got a few

I Runfess…

While I am excited to get back to racing triathlons again this summer, I have only swam once. With my races quickly approaching, I need to get my butt into that pool. Those laps are not going to swim themselves. Hoping posting it here will give me some accountability.

I Runfess…

I used to love receiving my Women’s Running Magazine and Runner’s World Magazine in the mail each month. Lately, I feel that the magazines are mostly ads and articles about elites. I am never going to be an elite runner and I miss reading about topics that everyday runners face. While we are at it, I resent the fact that Runner’s World wants you to pay to read their online articles when you already subscribe to the magazine. I’ve also noticed many of those articles are really just ads for products they own.

I just realized that the Cherry Blossom 10 miler is just 5 weeks away! Whoa, how did that happen so fast? I am still plugging along using my intervals. I am up to 6:1 intervals and I plan to stay with those until after Cherry Blossom. I will then switch to triathlon mode and shorter runs. We will see what happens then with the intervals. Loving the custom Garmin watch face.

I am always interested in testing out new products that may help me recover faster. I am currently playing around with The Power Dot Smart Muscle stimulator. Basically a stim program that can be run through your phone. Look for my full review and giveaway coming mid March.

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Oh, I should be more in the pool as well!
I have a sprint triathlon coming up in April and I have only swam three times this year. Fortunately it will be only 500m, but still.

      02/28/2020 at 7:54 am

ha that’s exactly how I feel! Who will make it back to the pool first 🙂

I wrote a whole post on my disgust with RW. Shoe reviews. Every month.

Anxious to hear more about that muscle stimulator!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 7:55 am

Yes I do remember your post. They used to be a good source for things but not so much anymore unfortunately

  3. Marcia says

    02/28/2020 at 7:30 am

I runfess RW still shows up in the mail here and I can’t remember the last time I cracked one open. Total snore! And I agree with you: Paying for the website is ridiculous. I think the only thing that could get my in the pool now is committing to a master’s swim class. Ugh. Love that watch face!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 7:57 am

I did a masters swim class for over a year and liked it. I dropped my gym membership and then never went back just to swim. Dilemmas!

I love stim!! It’s my favorite part of getting adjusted at the chiropractor near my parents house.

I get why magazines and newspapers only give you a certain number of free articles to read a month since they need to be able to pay their employees. But to make you pay to get a physical magazine and then an additional fee on top for the online articles is insane. That makes no sense.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 4:04 pm

I agree about the magazines! I am liking having this at home stim option to play with

I stopped subscribing to actual running magazines awhile ago. I kind of miss them, but I wasn’t getting enough use out of them. And now there is just so much info available on the internet. I’m looking forward to reading more about that muscle stimulator!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 4:07 pm

I feel like the mags are just fluff and don’t hold my interest the way they once did. Will be sharing more about the stim soon

I’m frustrated with RW, too. I tried to go online last year and cancel my subscription and could not get through… it kept redirecting to a different site or something. There was no number for customer service to call…so I gave up. Somehow my account automatically renews…so that’s another annoyance that happened all on its own. The $24 (?) subscription isn’t gonna break me, but still…

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 4:09 pm

I guess mine renews as well but I do think they should give you access to their online site w your subscription

  7. Darlene S Cardillo says

    02/28/2020 at 9:59 am

    I subscribe RW…not sure why. A habit I guess.

Oh I need to customize my Garmin.

Cherry Blossom is on my list Someday.

can wait to read your review of that app.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 4:09 pm

Yes come do Cherry Blossom next year! Look for my review of the stim soon testing it out a bit more

  8. Chaitali says

    02/28/2020 at 11:53 am

I feel the same way about the changes to Runner’s World. I barely read it any more and I’m definitely not paying to read their online content.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/28/2020 at 4:10 pm

Yes exactly! I used to get excited about reading it when it came

  9. Michelle D. says

    02/28/2020 at 7:14 pm

Yeah I’m with you on the RW online articles – no chance I’m paying. I canceled my hard copy subscription awhile ago – and while I still receive Women’s Running, it’s a complimentary subscription and I can’t remember the last time I read it.

I’ll be really interested in hearing your thoughts on the Power Dot!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/29/2020 at 11:20 pm

Totally agree on the mags and yes review on power dots coming soon

  10. Cari says

    02/28/2020 at 10:47 pm

I dropped Runners’ World for the same reason. Also so much content is incessantly reproduced. Their quality isn’t what it was, and that makes me sad. And was it you or Marcia I was talking to about the ridiculous SHAPE Half. It’s literally the same course as Lebow and every other Central Park Half and it’s ~$40 more “because you get a magazine subscription.”. Nope. No way. Not gonna happen
The Cherry Blossom one is my first ever Garmin face. It snuck up on me too. Yay spring. Due to the Passover/Spring Break overlap, I’ve never had such an easy time getting a DC hotel. Happy Cari

Yes CB is coming soon fingers crossed for great weather again

  11. Jenn says

    02/29/2020 at 12:09 pm

Cherry Blossom is another one I would just love to do. Maybe it will be an option for next year.

I’d be interested in learning more about the muscle stimulator!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/29/2020 at 11:21 pm

      Put CB on your list!

  12. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says

    02/29/2020 at 3:56 pm

The power dot thing looks interesting! I had a little thing like that that I really liked & used a lot . . . until I didn’t. I’ve also let a lot of my magazines lapse. I actually enjoy reading magazines, but I don’t seem to have enough time these days.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      02/29/2020 at 11:21 pm

They are not as good as they used to be!

  13. iidorun says

    03/01/2020 at 9:29 pm

Ditto about RW and other running magazines. I gave up paper subscriptions a long time ago when i started being able to find all the articles online. The Cherry Blossom is on my bucket list but this time of year gets so busy with my kids!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/02/2020 at 8:01 am

Hope you get to the cherry blossom one year it’s a fun one
