Earlier this week, the run squad and I met up for a matinee showing of Brittany Runs A Marathon. I mean, how could we not go check out this female lead running movie? Without giving away too much of the movie, I will share a quick Fast Friday review.
Brittany Runs A Marathon
We first meet Brittany (Jillian Bell) as a self deprecating, funny and over weight millennial living in New York City. Kind of a “hot mess” of a woman. She kind of reminds me of a young Amy Schumer character. Based on a true story, this comedy/drama is predictable but in a fun and heart warming way. It’s a laugh out loud comedy that also pulls at the heart strings as we root for Brittany.
At the start, Brittany is caught in a vortex of excessive drinking, meaningless sex and occasional drug use. She is surrounded by superficial friends who could care less about her. After her doctor suggests that she needs to adopt a healthier lifestyle and lose some weight, Brittany decides to run the NYC marathon. Go big or go home right!
Check out the official trailer here:
As Brittany starts on her journey, we see her physical and emotional transformation. She re-evaluates her friendships and family relationships. Most importantly, she discovers her own self worth. Brittany joins a running group and we witness her progression from a non runner to a marathoner.
Her road to the New York City marathon is not without the usual speed bumps that many runners encounter. Her innocence and naivety have the viewer pulling for her to achieve her goals. As she builds her confidence with running, we watch her gain self esteem and make more positive choices with her career and love life. We found ourselves laughing and crying for her as we see her running through New York City.
Brittany Runs A Marathon is a fun, feel good comedy/drama to catch with a few girlfriends. Tell me, has anyone else seen it yet?

I am a sucker for a running film and I hope this makes it over here! Reminds me a bit of Run, Fat Boy, Run, which I need to watch again.

A while back I read a book about a lady who was in a similar situation and was trying to train for the London Marathon. I wondered if this movie was based loosely on her story? Either way, I could see this film being something I would want to see. Thanks for the review.

It is a true story about a woman who ran NYC

It was less about running than I expected but entertaining none the less

I really want to see this! Thanks for the review and I’m so glad to hear you liked it!
Deborah Brooks says
I did enjoy it but it was a lot less about running than I expected. It was more about how the training changed her life
Chris says
No not seen it but it’s good to hear of a film showing the positive impact that running can have.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly it was a fun low key movie

This has been on my radar for awhile…thanks for the preview 😉 I suspected there would be more than just running…after all, most runners do have a life outside of their running shoes. I’m glad to hear it had a bit more to offer about her life while on her journey to the finish line.
Deborah Brooks says
It was less about running than I expected and more of a finding yourself movie but a fun watch with friends movie

My running group discussed it, but we decided to wait until it came out on Amazon. Too hard to find a date that worked for everyone with such a short window.
Sounds like we definitely need to do that. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
You could definitely wait until it comes out on Amazon but it would be fun to watch with your crew
Coco says
Sounds like a fun movie!
Deborah Brooks says
It was nice to get out with the girls to see it

I really would like to see this movie but unfortunately it isn’t playing at any theaters near me 🙁 I’m hoping that eventually there will be a showing near me so I can see it! I am particularly interested in it since NYCM was also my first marathon.
Kim G says
I actually take that back – I just searched again and it’s playing in my city 🙂 I’m going to see it this weekend.
Deborah Brooks says
Oh fun enjoy!
Deborah Brooks says
It’s a fun feel good movie!

I haven’t seen it yet but I’m dying too. I’ve heard good things but really, how could a movie about running be bad?
Deborah Brooks says
It’s a fun movie hope you have a chance to check it out
Dominique Cheylise says
This seems like a good movie, actually! I saw the one with Amy Shumer last year or so that was kind of similar and really liked it. I might check this one out!
Deborah Brooks says
It was a fun girls night out!

I was wondering how this was. As a runner and NYC marathon finisher, I’ve got to see it!

Your review endorses my decision — I might have enjoyed it, but this isn’t the one to break my no movies streak for
Deborah Brooks says
No not a must see kind of movie but a fun outing. I am excited to see Downton Abbey this weekend though 🙂
