Thanks for joining Kim and Me for the Weekly Run Down today. February blew by ending with a fast finish this week. Here is a peek into my week of fitness and happenings.
A Fast Finish To February
Monday- upper body strength + core + Peloton + stretch
I slept in a bit today. After my 11 mile run yesterday, I was tired. I am in the peak week of my run program this week and the peak mileage week of my half marathon plan. Sleep is going to be a priority this week. I skipped the lower body strength today to let me legs recover for Tuesday’s run.
Tuesday- Progression run + stretch classes
My legs were still a little tired from Sunday. Today’s run called for a slight increase in pace every 5 minutes to end up at your “tempo” pace for 5 minutes. Essentially the perfect negative split run. I ran my first few intervals too fast but ended up at my finishing pace. So, I will call that a win. Interested to see how my baseline pace will change from week 1 when we check it again next week.
Afternoon hair cut & color. I go every 7-8 weeks but it feels like I was just there!
Wednesday- core + upper body + stretch
I had my yearly physical exam today. This required fasting (which I hate) and a 3 hour appointment at my Dr. They do everything from blood work to an in body scan to hearing test etc. I was starving by the time I got home. Only got in a short workout today but that’s okay. i also got my 2nd Shingles vaccine, I felt nothing the first time or after any of Covid shots. This time my arm is pretty sore.
Thursday- Speed work 6 mile run + core
I woke up still a little tired but determined to knock out this last week of intense speed work. My plan had me doing a 6, 7, and 8-minute burst at tempo pace. It was spicy! A fast finish indeed. I was happy with my numbers and feel accomplished. The 35 degree temperature drop with some rain did not help! By the afternoon I had a terrible headache (I rarely get them) and some muscle aches. I realized this was the vaccine and went to bed early. Surprisingly, I slept 10 hours!
Friday- upper body + lower body + core and Peloton cycle
Thankfully, that good night’s sleep did the trick. While my arm is still sore, I was feeling back to myself. Enjoyed a good solid workout.
Saturday- Rest Day + stretch
I am celebrating National Pancake Day a few days early. Full day off in preparation for my longest run of this training block.
Sunday- on the plan 12 mile run
I sort of had to mentally prepare myself for this one. The weather is looking good and should “run” smoothly.
Thanks for joining us today. Does it feel like a fast finish to February for you too?

Nice work this week!!! Yeah, that shingles vaccine is a tough one. Good for you getting it, though. That is one thorough physical exam! I don’t think I’ve ever had my hearing tested. I have my mammogram and bone density coming up, followed by a colonoscopy. Getting it all done this year!
Good luck on that 12 miler! You got this!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes, they do all the tests once a year I like it. I was surprised how the shingles vax hit me so hard!
Melissa says
Great job this week! Good luck on the 12 miler. Good weather will be good – hopefully it goes super smoothly.
I haven’t had a physical in a while – that’s a good reminder to get one done.
Deborah Brooks says
Always a good habit to be in yearly. Run went pretty well thanks

Ugh, in recent years, vaccines have really done a number on me. Last year, the hubs and I got all four of the shingles & Covid stabs in the first few months of 2021… I was in a constant state of vax-hangover 🙁 I hope your 12-miler goes well 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I was surprised I had a reaction to it that way! Run went pretty well and ready to relax
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
When it was time for my husband and me to get our Covid vaccinations, we told each other it would be a piece of cake because we’d survived the second shingles shot. We both had every symptom listed as a possibility with the second shingles shot.
Here’s hoping your long run today is going well – you’re probably out running right now.
Have a great week!
Deborah Brooks says
I was surprised I had such a reaction to it but all fine now. Thanks it was a gorgeous day for a run
Coco says
That’s a thorough physical! That shinlges vaccine is still on my to do list. I hope your 12 miler goes well. It is good wearther for it!
Deborah Brooks says
very thorough! We joined Inova VIP concierge practice last year and they are fantastic. Great day for run
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
I hope you have a great long run today! I got a shingles vaccine this week too. My arms were pretty sore the next day due to having a covid booster too. Who knew it would be such a struggle to hook my bra! Your hair looks awesome. Really pretty color! Great job checking off the boxes on your training plan this week!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks all around! Yes, my arm is still sore!
Andrea Hall says
Sounds like you had a productive week, love the haircut and highlights!
Wishing you well on the 12 miler!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks so much hope you are well my friend thinking of you
Marcia says
All the best with your 12 miler! I predict a great race for you. You’ve worked hard and stuck to the plan. Have a great week!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Marcia! I am definitely feeling the last week of training and ready to back off a bit
Jenny says
Sounds like you had a great week, even throwing the vaccine in there. I hope your 12 miler went well! And thanks for the heads-up about National Pancake Day. It’s Tuesday! I usually miss these things, but I’ll plan to have pancakes that day.
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely take advantage of pancake day! Thanks and yes run went pretty well
Chocolaterunsjudy says
You’ve had a great training cycle, Deborah! You are ready.
I wish I didn’t have reactions to vaccines. Seriously they do such a number on me. I actually think part of the problem in January was from my booster the end of December. Glad you recovered quickly1
It’s definitely been a hot minute since I’ve had pancakes!
Deborah Brooks says
I was surprised given that I had no reaction at all to any of the others. I think I am all good now!
Michelle says
I’ve heard that Shingles vax packs a punch. I have my physical scheduled for later this year and I’m sure that will be in the mix.
You had a great week! I hope your 12-miler went smoothly!
Liz Dexter says
Lovely hair! I don’t have a post to post this month. I had a very routine running month but we’ve been having trouble at running club with someone who wants to take part but not do the necessary admin to do so, one of my running friends has been having health problems and another friend collapsed while volunteering with me at parkrun, so it’s not felt like one I’ve wanted to write about.
Hope your run today was good and you continue to recover from your vaccination.
Jessie says
I didn’t know the shingles vaccine was so tough on the body! Glad that’s behind you. And fasting is toughest part of some of those checkups! Hope all is well on the results.
Good luck on the 12 mile! Your running seems to be going really well! Two speed workouts per week! I recently asked my coach to change from one really long workout + workout in the long run to two weekly workouts instead and mostly easy for the long run and that seems to be working better for me.
Deborah Brooks says
The long run I do try to keep at the easy miles. I really enjoyed the speed workouts this week but I am feeling the extra load and the extra mileage of the last 2 weeks and I am a little tired.Ready to start tapering
Kim G says
I love your new highlights – the color is great!
Thanks for the heads up on National Pancake Day. That’s one holiday i definitely don’t want to miss, lol.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! And, yes national pancake day is a holiday not to be missed 🙂
Jenn says
That training plan is no joke!
Your hair is gorgeous – it never looks that red in your workout photos!
We are having pancakes for dinner tonight. Yum.
Deborah Brooks says
thanks the red does not show up that well when I have it up in a ponytail but I do like the highlights
