I recently ran into one of my nutrition clients at the grocery store. Not too surprisingly, she was really keen to see what was in my grocery cart. While I do like to mix up my diet, there are a few items that are always in my cart and in my fridge. I tend to stick to the perimeter aisles where the produce, dairy, and other essentials are located. Here is a peek into what a nutrition coach has in her grocery cart each week.
5 Foods in my grocery cart
These are a few of my go-to items weekly and why I pick them over and over again.
Eggs
A powerhouse protein source. Eggs and hard-boiled eggs are purchased each week. I use them for omelets, oatmeal bakes, and snacks almost daily. I also like to purchase a container of egg beaters for quick omelets. One of my favorite snacks is to remove the yellows from the hard boiled eggs and add in a dollop of hummus. So good!
Milk
There is a reason why milk is often touted as a perfect recovery drink for runners. With a combo of carbs and protein, it is a great option to refuel post-run. Milk can be enjoyed post-run by itself, in a smoothie, or mixed into oatmeal. My go to is to shake it up with whey protein powder for a quick hit of protein.
Greek Yogurt
Another protein packed staple that makes a tasty, nutritious snack paired with berries and granola. Look for low sugar, lower-fat options. This is my pick without artificial sweetener.
Fruit and Veggies
You will see my cart packed with a few bags of the ready to eat salad blends. They make a great base for lunch and I just add a protein. In addition, my cart is piled high with my favorite staples such as broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, and squash. Bananas, apples, and berries are my fruit picks.
Oatmeal
I have become a huge lover of oatmeal bakes of all kinds. I love to make them in advance so they are ready to go in the morning. Oatmeal is my favorite pre-workout fuel with a great ratio of protein and carbs.
Tuna
A super easy, high quality protein. I love to add tuna to my salads or eat it on a cracker or wrap. I prefer these sustainably caught portions.

Fruits, veggies, oatmeal, and I would add peanut butter! That’s definitely an item we can’t live without around here. Oh, and tofu- we eat lots of tofu! And nuts. And pretzels. Just kidding on that last one- it’s definitely in my grocery cart but not something a nutritionist would recommend!
Deborah Brooks says
I also eat lots of tofu and tempeh. I do love PNB and add it to my oatmeal often

I have most of the same 🙂 I do need to go heavier on the veggies, though. I love the salad packs/bags! Those are so convenient & I can get several servings out of just one bag if I don’t mix in the dressing & add in some extra cheese or hard-boiled eggs.

I love the prewashed salad bags too super convenient

I read this sentence too quickly as your favorite shapes, which is funny in its own right: In addition, my cart is piled high with my favorite staples such as broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, and squash.
need to try that with hummus. My favorite yolk sub is smashed avocado with chili flakes
Greek yogurt has definitely been in my cart more often thanks to the pickle recipe you posted last year.
Deborah Brooks says
smashed avocado is also a fave. I have to find a way to get the other half not to turn brown so fast
