10 Incredibly Productive Things To Do While Stuck at Home

productive things

Read a new book

Have a pile of books that you have been meaning to read? Now’s the time! I am now reading “In Five Years” by Rebecca Serle. I wanted a light hearted book and this is it. A love story with a twist!

Take up a new hobby

Always wanted a vegetable garden but never had time to plant? Learn to knit? Anything you can think of there is a youtube learning video for. I bought these adult paint by numbers kits for holiday gifts for friends. Saved one for myself and it seems like the perfect time to get painting. Do a puzzle.

Learn a new Language

Always wanted to learn how to speak a new language or brush up on your high school French? The Duolingo app is free and very doable a few minutes a day.

Clean out your pantry

In my rush to stock up on everything the past few weeks, my one organized pantry is now a chaotic mess. I will be tackling that next week.

Try new recipes/Play Master Chef

One of my personal favorite ways to destress. Open your pantry or freezer and pull out a few items and see what fun recipes you can come up with. Challenge your family with a Master Chef type competition.

Organize your closet

I like to do this every season anyway but now seems like a great time for a major overhaul. Check out my easy hack to organize your workout clothes.

Take photos of spring blossoms

Spring is emerging and so are the beautiful flowers. Perfect time to photograph them and take in their beauty.

Take Walks with your family

If one good thing has come out of this crisis so far, it’s seeing all the families out on walks together. Perhaps that will continue even after we get back to “normal”.

Try new workouts

My favorite stress relieve for sure! Check out 3 months of free Peloton classes. So many studios are offering free classes it’s a great way to check out new activities with no cost.

Online shop

Hey a little retail therapy is always good! Every store has a sale right now.

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

So many good ideas! Just yesterday I read that so many people in Switzerland were cleaning out their cellars that the waste disposal facility in Switzerland was overloaded.
People are definitely using the extra at home to clean up!

I keep saying I need to clean and purge, lol! But books? I’m on it.

I also need to do some work on the blog and fix some things that are broken.

    Shopping? done…

I have been doing a bunch of blog stuff too and updating pins. I need to finish my closet reorganization for sure. Sometimes when I have more time, it,s easier to put things off

I feel like I’ve been flying through books this past week and I’m not complaining. I haven’t gone through my pantry but i did go through the bathroom cabinets and it felt good. One of my goals for this time at home is to tackle all of my clothes to see what I like/wear, what can be donated and what needs to be trashed from a rip or stain. Stay safe and healthy!

That’s great! I have started my closet and need to finish it,

A great thing with the current situation is the hubby has not been traveling, so we’ve been doing daily walks with Max. That’s a triple win for us 😉

That’s nice! My hubs is also not traveling TBD if that is good for us or not lol

Great ideas! I was thinking that I’d use this time to get back to drawing, and my pantry definitely needs some organization. I’ve been using duolingo for Spanish and I really like it.

Yes there are a bunch of things we can do to stay busy

I actually need more hours in the day, not needing to fill up my time! Another good thing about “working” from home.

Dance. Sing. Listen to music. Color.

      03/20/2020 at 2:49 pm

Those are great ideas! I do love how you find the positive in things

I keep SAYING this is the perfect opportunity for spring cleaning, but we’ll see if I actually do it on this first weekend of being truly stuck at home (and not last-minute-shopping like last weekend). My usual tendency to do one of your other tips, catching up on reading, might take over…(but I do that every weekend!!)

Just saw your tips for sorting workout gear… love it, great idea! Now in a pile on the floor…oops, did I just admit that. 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/20/2020 at 9:04 pm

my own workout gear needs to be reorganized as well. Let’s both do it!

Work is keeping me a little busier than I’d like, but that’s a good problem to have. Other than that, I’m relearning how to solve a rubix cube and I will never get tired of all of this extra family time.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/20/2020 at 9:05 pm

I like the extra family time but not sure if my older kids do as much 🙂

I am going to do a lot of organizing/cleaning because I really want to be productive during this crazy time. I’m pretty sure I can find some other projects around the house to occupy my time too.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/20/2020 at 9:08 pm

I think we will all be super organized after this!

  11. Coco says

I’ve been crazy busy with work still, or really just taking twice as long to do half as much because everything else is so distracting. I’m looking forward to some puzzle time this weekend!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/20/2020 at 9:08 pm

      That sounds good!

We’re planning on more walks with the family. We are trying to find a hiking area around us that is secluded to keep distance.

      Sounds like a great plan!

Great list! Planning to organize closets and serious spring cleaning in the next few weeks. Also keeping busy with both of my girls home with the school closed and adjusting to a new normal of ‘homeschooling’. Fortunately the girls love playing school at home.
