Work With What You Have Weekly Run Down

Thanks for joining Kim and me for the weekly run down. This week I am working with what I have not what I want. How? I am forcing and leaning int what I can do and not what I cannot. Overall, it was a much better week.

weekly run down

Work with what i have

Sunday- Peloton cycle + standing core + upper body + stretch

Cycling seems not to bother whatever it is irritating my glutes and hip area. Some of the standing core work I had to modify a bit. As always, it feels good to be able to move more this week.

Monday-40 min Peloton cycle + PT session + 4 mile walk

Riding my Peloton bike seems to be good therapy for what ails my hips and glutes. I am definitely in less pain today and had a good session with the PT. He had me doing some weighted squats and lunges and quickly realized that I needed heavier weights. Later, I had an afternoon coffee walk with a friend that felt much better than just a few days ago.

Weekly rn down

Taking my own advice today: “work with what you have today not what you wish you had”

Tuesday- PT exercises + core + Peloton cycle + 2 mile walk

Working with what I have again today. My PT exercises includes weighted squats and lunges, I’ve been able to add back in Peloton rides and the walking today was not as uncomfortable. I took the new Brooks Ghost Max out for a power walk.

Weekly run down

Later, I substitute coached for Girls On The Run. Depending on how long you have been here, you may remember I coached GOTR for 8 years until the pandemic started. It was nice to be back out there with the young girls agaIn.The theme for the lesson today was friendship-also something I am passionate about. 🙂 This definitely lifted my mood this week.

Weekly run down

Wednesday-Peloton Barre core + upper body strength + PT

My PT has me doing squats and lunges with pretty heavy weights along with step ups and stretching. I do feel less pain today and I am wondering is it because I am not running? I’ve always done strength work so I am skeptical that is what is making the difference. I’m keeping at it though and hope to start running again soon.

Thursday- Barre + core + upper body strength + stretch and 2 mile walk

Using heavier weights again today felt good. It was a gorgeous day here so I swapped out cycling for a walk around the hood. Did you catch my stretch of the week?

Friday-core+ barre+ lower body strength

I am feeling stronger again and less pain while doing my lower body strength and core. Gotta work with what you have!

Saturday-3 mile walk + full body strength

Strength and walking felt pretty good today. I still have some pain in my hip and glutes but it is decreasing and I can do more. Any week that I can finish feeling stronger than I started is a win.

Fingers crossed I will be able to resume running soon.

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

Yes. Friends are so important. We are both lucky in that respect.

No NYC. Sad about that. We’ll have meet up another way.

I’m glad to hear you are feeling better. Hoping that when you start running again, you’ll do it pain free! I’m sure it was really uplifting to coach GOTR! I do get a lift from my little patients, that is for sure. Have a good week.

Fingers crossed for you! And yes, feeling strong at the end of the week is absolutely a win (I’ve been feeling just a touch run down).

I’ll bet all the young girl runners lifted your spirits, too.

    Trust the process!

It is not so easy to trust the process sometimes. I am happy to see improvement and hope it continues. Hope you get some extra rest this week

It’s great that you are making progress! Seeing your walks get more comfortable is a good sign.

That’s great that you were able to sub in for GOTR. That’s such a great thing for girls.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/22/2023 at 9:00 am

I did have fun subbing in for the girls after a few years. I am hopeful that the pain is decreasing and I hope I can get back running soon

Sounds like your hip/glute recovery is moving in the right direction. Maybe you strained something?? How great to back with GOTR. Such a great organization.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/22/2023 at 12:42 pm

I was only substitute teaching for GOTR but it was fun to be back with the girls for a day

  8. Jenny says

Sounds like things are moving in the right direction! That’s good news, and also good that walking and cycling are feeling good.
“Work with what you have” is such a great mindset. It carries through to everything- I think one of the reasons I keep getting injured when I do speed work is that I’m running too fast. I’m running “5K paced” intervals at my OLD 5k pace, not the current one. We have to be honest with ourselves about where we are right now, and go from there.
I’ve been stretching every night, and I do a hip flexor stretch- I’m going to try adding your twist in. My hips have been tight lately.
I hope you have a good week!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/22/2023 at 12:45 pm

It can be hard to accept where we are at the moment. However, to be the runner we want to be we first have to be the runner we are. Those hips are always my weak spot too

This is such encouraging news, Deborah! Glad to hear things are feeling better 😉 Hopefully, the return to pain-free running isn’t too far away!

I’m glad you’re getting some help from your PT – lifting heavy weights can work wonders. Happy to hear you’re getting better and I hope it continues. By now you’re the queen of patience and of adapting and working with what you have. I hope you’ll be pain free soon. Did he have any idea of what the problem is?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/22/2023 at 6:53 pm

I am getting pretty tired of being patient. I know you know how that feels too!

  11. San says

    10/22/2023 at 11:19 pm

So happy to hear you can use the bike without a problem and that the work with your PT is helping, but I hear you… it’s hard to be patient.

I think I am feeling slightly better bc I have not been running…not sure how I am going to get back but I will find a way

That’s so wonderful that you are back at Girls on the Run! It seems like such a great program. I haven’t seen it here in London, but it should expand here!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      10/23/2023 at 7:32 pm

I only helped out once for a friend who was on vacation but it was fun to return again.

Oh, my fingers are crossed for you, too! I have been bumping up my weights in the gym and I love adding more on when I can. I’m glad it’s working out for you.

So happy that you can be back with GOTR again! It’s such a great organization!
