I find it amusing that people get so wrapped up (pun intended) in the Black Friday shopping frenzy. I realized that runners really have a few advantages, that they might not even be aware of, over non running shoppers. It’s almost not even fair. Why Runners make the best Black Friday Shoppers.
Runners know how to pace ourselves
Black Friday shopping seems to start earlier and earlier each year. It is definitely a marathon not a sprint. Pace yourself accordingly.
Runners are used to setting our alarms really early and getting it done
Runners are used to getting up early and getting it done. Getting ourselves to a store is no sweat.
Runners know how to carb up for the big event
Thankfully the big meal the day before is perfect. Runners are ready to take on shopping like we mean business.
Runners know the right shoes and the right clothes make all the difference in performance
While I now do all of my Black Friday shopping in my PJ’s on my computer, if I had to go to a store I would be dressed for success.
We’ve got the right gear
A race/fuel belt makes the perfect Black Friday accessory. It holds all your credit cards, cash, snacks and drinks.
All of those non runners have no idea who they are up against!!
Honestly, I am not a Black Friday shopper myself. I would rather stay home and shop in my PJ’s. How about you? Black Friday yes or no? What’s on your list? I am looking for some new running gloves and some hats.

Love it. Very true… as long as we aren’t sore from going too hard in the Turkey Trot! 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Well yes there’s that!
Teri @ Reinventitude says
So very funny and clever! I’m not a black Friday shopper. For the past 2 years, I have been able to find the same deals starting right now and online!!! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I know it’s a lot of hype isn’t it?!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
LOL, great post!
Nope, I will definitely not be out there next Friday. I’ll be recuperating from all the Thanksgiving hijinks, whatever they turn out to be.
I’ll be online, no doubt, but I rarely find anything worthwhile even online. End of the year? That’s a different story!
Although I may or may not have been soothing myself with online deals recently since I’m almost housebound with Chester.
Deborah Brooks says
Nothing wrong with a little retail therapy 🙂
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I will NOT be Black Friday shopping. And as far as I’m concerned, Runners Make the Best EVERYTHING 😀
Deborah Brooks says
But of course!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
haha love this!! I usually avoid black friday like the plague, but now you have me wanting to get all my running skills on!
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha those other shoppers would have no chance against you 🙂
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I am such an online shopper. I hate shopping, really! I just don’t have the patience for the crowds.
Deborah Brooks says
I hate the crowds too! You can find the same stuff online and often more
Jess @hellotofit says
These are hilarious, Deborah! I’ve shopped on Black Friday a couple of times, and would rather go on a different holiday weekend, say Labor Day. I think there are the same (or better) sales, without all the crazy madness!
[email protected] says
This is pretty funny and so true. However I am not a black Friday shopper either.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I never think the deals are as big as the hype
Lauren says
Haha this is cute! I totally agree about the early alarms part!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes definitely!
Ellen Pilch says
I need to take up running to prepare for next year, it is too late for this year.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s never too late!!
[email protected] says
Fantastic! Great analogies. I used to love black Friday shopping when I was younger….but not anymore. I do like going out in the crowds and getting a latte and walking around with the music and the spirit of the season, but save the actual shopping part for another day.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I am not so big on the crowds anymore but do love shopping
Annmarie says
Haha, this is great! Love it!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! Have a great weekend
Kristin says
Hahahaha I love this! I’m not a huge black Friday fan but I agree with you, runners are much better!
Deborah Brooks says
At everything right?!
HoHo Runs says
No black Friday for me! I usually decorate instead and listen to Christmas music. But, yes I do think runners would have the advantage. Great light-hearted take on this!
Deborah Brooks says
Absolutely!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
This is great and so clever, and your supporting points are spot on!
Have a great weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! 🙂
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Haha, this is funny. Just say no to Black Friday. No way in hell would you catch me out there. The deals aren’t THAT good. I’d rather shop from the comfort of my couch!
Deborah Brooks says
I have to agree with you!
Mary Beth Jackson says
This was to funny! I have shopped in the past when I needed something and now it is kind of like a tradition. My son, yes, my son has already asked if I have started to study the sale papers yet! I am with you , I’d rather sit on line in my jammies but if I go out I will definitely post my flat Skippy!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh yes I am counting on it!
Lindsey says
Love this!! Now I’m not afraid to wake up early and shop on black Friday!
Deborah Brooks says
Ah glad I could help! Have a great time!
Cayanne Marcus says
Haha! This was so cute and entertaining 🙂 I’ve never gone black Friday shopping, I’m not quite brave enough
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t think you are really missing much!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Great post Deborah and so very true!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks have to put a little fun into it!
Sharon says
Haha what a fun spin for black Friday! I won’t be out at the stores either. I’ll be outside enjoying the outdoors probably running or biking! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Now that sounds like a plan!
Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says
Haha, I love this post! I am a black friday shopper; I really enjoy it. You made me laugh about using the fuel belt for cash, cards, & a drink. Not going to lie, I might contemplate doing that 😉
Deborah Brooks says
LOL you have to post a pic if you do! Good luck out there
Marcia says
You’re killing me with the fuel belt for shopping! I wouldn’t go near a store on Black Friday. Yikes. Cyber Monday is a different story.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am more about the on line shopping these days too!
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
This is so true but there is no way in hell I’m heading to the stores on Black Friday!
Deborah Brooks says
ha me either!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Haaaaaaa!!!! I used to be a Black Friday shopper when I was younger, but I’m pretty much over it now. There is no sale worth standing in those crazy lines for!
Deborah Brooks says
i agree! I am too old for that!
Coco says
Cute! I might do some on-line shopping,
Deborah Brooks says
On line shopping is always so much easier!
Shannon @GirlsGotSole says
Ha ha, I love this! So true about getting up early, this is no biggie to us at all. And yes, we know how to pace ourselves on that big day. 🙂
Yeah, I’m not one to venture out an shop when it’s crazy like Black Friday. I don’t like all the crowds. I stick to online shopping.
Deborah Brooks says
I do not like the crowds either and the sales are not that great are they?
Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
LOL! So funny (and true!). I actually hate Black Friday (Cyber Monday is much more my cup of tea), but my husband is a shopper, so he and a running friend used to hit the stores together. Now I know why they were so good at it 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
LOL exactly!
Mar @ Mar on the Run says
CLEVER!! I love it. And no, I’m not a Black Friday shopper in anyway shape or form. I plan on hitting a spin class on Friday and work off that turkey!
Deborah Brooks says
Now that is a great idea! Have a nice weekend 🙂
Lucie says
Great & funny post! Luckily in Canada Black Friday isn’t really a thing. They try have some deals (since we are close to the border and they don’t want to loose sales to the US), but it’s nothing like in the states. I prefer doing my shopping online and sparing myself of the stress of fighting for parking, waiting in long lines etc..
Deborah Brooks says
I know it can get crazy even for us experts!
Carmy says
Our finish line kick really comes in handy at sales 😉
Deborah Brooks says
There you go another one!
Sam @ PancakeWarriors says
I”m cracking up through this post Deborah!! I am now convinced that you are right, runners are in fact made for black friday shopping!! I will be home in bed or at the gym teaching a camp! No crazy malls for me – I try to keep away from people in that high stress/panic mode!
Deborah Brooks says
It can get a little crazy out there!!
Celia at Chicago Jogger says
Ha – cute post. I won’t be shopping next Friday (except maaaybe online) but kudos to those who make it out there 😉
Deborah Brooks says
I know me either too crazy for me!
Kristen says
Haha I love this! I’m not a black friday shopper either, but I can definitely see how runners have an advantage on this. We spend so much time on our feet that long lines won’t bother us!
Deborah Brooks says
Ha see there is another one-we so got this!
Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says
LOL, cute post!
Oh I am totally not a Black Friday shopper, mainly because I enjoy sleeping and no one plans a wedding for the day after Thanksgiving. However I do have one 2 days after Thanksgiving this year which is odd, but to each their own:)
I did have a friend ask me if I would go with her this year, not to shop, but just to take video camera’s and film all the crazies, in the chance we could capture a crazy You Tube money making hit, LOL LOL I haven’t decided if yet, but we shall see!
But in the fun of this post, heck ya do I think runners would make the most awesome black Friday shoppers, winners of the deals for sure!
Deborah Brooks says
ok you totally have to go film people doing crazy obnoxious things!! I can’t wait to see it!
Kate @KateMovingForward says
Hilarious!! Clearly runners are a cut above the rest! 😉 I tend to go out later in the day on Black Friday (think getting places at 9-10) then meet friends for lunch. I’m in it more for the tradition than for buying stuff on that day.
Deborah Brooks says
The tradition is fun but it’s gotten so crazy out of control!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
This is hilarious. The fuel belt is KEY!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I think it might be 🙂
Kelli says
Deborah I am LMAO thinking about a gaggle of MRTT ladies with fuel belts storming the stores for Black Friday!!
Deborah Brooks says
That would be hilarious!
Toni says
Hahaha, this is great, but I hate Black Friday and usually just work.
Deborah Brooks says
Honestly, I am not a big shopper that day bc I don’t think the deals are all that great but it’s amusing how people go crazy
Amber says
This article made me smile – loved the “we know how to pace ourselves” I think how many people and what you’re shopping for can determine if it’s a yay or nay, but never at 4am, that’s crazy! I prefer online shopping now but have braved the crowds before!
Deborah Brooks says
People do go a little nutty sometimes!
Lynda@fitnessmomwinecountry says
Love this Deborah! I am not a Black Friday shopper either, but this is awesome, and yep makes sense. Our daughter wants the husband to take her out on that day just to try it. I think they are nuts.
Deborah Brooks says
I tried it once with my daughter people are nuts!
Becki S says
Loved this post! I am thinking about making a black Friday work out =) But seriously I should offer my gear to my Mother In Law this year.
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha yes it might help!
Akaleistar says
This is so funny! But, shopping in your pj’s is the best 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
It sure is! Have a great Thanksgiving
Natalie says
Love this!! No wayyy am I shopping on Black Friday. I’d much rather run and maybe hike with the fam.
I am not a huge shopper anyway and I don’t like crowds. But I will jump on line and hopefully get some great deals!! I haven’t started my Christmas shopping yet!!!!
Deborah Brooks says
You better get moving then!!
Cynthia says
I am not a Black Friday shopper either – hate the thought of going into crowds. I don’t buy online either – unless it meets my Rule of Three (like it, need it and can afford it). Of course, sometimes we really need things that we don’t.
I think hockey players make better BF shoppers; they are use to body checking.
Deborah Brooks says
OH yes great point!! I hate crowds too 🙂
jill conyers says
Hilarious! I love black friday shopping with my daughter. We started going when she was still small enough to ride in a shopping cart and haven’t missed one since.
Deborah Brooks says
My daughter loves it but I am so over it! I hate the crowds. Hope you two have fun again
John @ run. geek. run(disney) says
Great post and definitely true. We can get up early, fuel, and last for quite a while. And if you run in the northeast, standing waiting to start in the cold is no problem either. The runners will be the ones in the trash bags.
Deborah Brooks says
Also true I think we are ready!!
Ariana says
Hahaha this is hilarious and so true!! I’m not a big fan of shopping on Black Friday. I wait until the evening and go to Bath & Body works to stock up on candles for Christmas baskets and that’s about it 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Well that’s a great plan too! Everyone loves that good smelling stuff right?
Caroline S. says
I actually enjoy shopping most times and have had my fair share of Black Friday shopping. I use to get excited until I realized I really didn’t need anything from the stores than I thought I did. Plus I’m not a big fan of the early morning cold. I only go if I really need something, and most likely this year I’ll be comfy in my P.J.s just enjoying the holiday weekend frenzy free! I really liked this fun post by the way!
https://curlycaroline.wordpress.com/
Deborah Brooks says
I know the few times that I went I bought things I didn’t even really want only because they were on sale. Go figure!
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
lol this is an awesome post! Getting up at 4 am? no problem! 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Ha ha right unfortunately all those races train us for that too!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I don’t know how I missed this post but it is hilarious! I’m not a black Friday shopper, but if I were, I’d be a pro! And armed with a fuel belt (with Tailwind, of course), there’d be NO stopping me!
Deborah Brooks says
I completely agree and I would so be on your team!
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
def not a black friday shopper. i, too, prefer to shop online and go to local stores for small business saturday! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! So much less stressful. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving
Kerri McGrail says
This is so true! This gave me a good laugh- setting early alarms, being dressed for comfort & caring up are things I definitely know how to do! Debating if I will actually head out on black friday this year or just shop from my computer lol!
Deborah Brooks says
I’m so over it I will be at my computer. Have a nice Thanksgiving
Fairytales and fitness says
Nope. Not a black Friday shopper either. Although I find this post funny!
Deborah Brooks says
Shopping from your couch is so much easier huh?!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
This is hilarious! So many parallels! Honestly, I think runners are generally better at EVERYTHING because we know how to get stuff done, set goals, deal with being uncomfortable, and plan.
Deborah Brooks says
Well sounds good to me!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Good one, Deborah! No, I have NEVER been a Black Friday shopper. My sister used to be, but now she works in retail & so she’s working today.
I rarely find great deals on Black Friday, anyway.
Deborah Brooks says
I know I have been looking around on line and nothing I want is on sale
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I am also all about online shopping now. I actually dont think Ive ever gone to the stores on Black Friday. It’s just not my thing!
Deborah Brooks says
Way too crowded!
Cari says
Couch Black Friday shopper all the way. I did pop into Ulta since it was between train and home, but coupon wasn’t good on anything I needed.
Deborah Brooks says
That is what always happens to me!
Kimberly Hatting says
This a cute post and so on-point. I used to be all about getting out the door around 5:00 or so. Then the sales started earlier & earlier (midnight). Now that everything is starting on Thanksgiving day itself, I’ve lost interest. If I get to the mall (an hour away) by mid-morning, I’m good. Most of the crazy freaks are gone by then 😉
Deborah Brooks says
I have lost interest too and the things I am interested in never seem to be on sale
