Thanks for joining me and Kim for the Weekly Run Down. I seem to have developed a case of piraformis syndrome. What is that you ask? It is literally a pain in the ass. Deep into the glute area, there is a crampy, almost constant pain. Nope, this is not what I need 2 weeks out from my Maine half marathon. So having said that, here is a peek into my week of fitness and running.
When running is a pain in the ass
Monday- Peloton cycle + upper/lower body strength + core and barre/stretch
I was happy to be back home and back on my schedule today. Since I was having some pain in my butt, I took it really easy on the lower body moves.
Tuesday- 4 mile-ish run and 2 mile walk + stretch + barre
As soon as I started running this morning, my butt was not having it. I had to stop a number of times to walk and shake it off. I spent the rest of the day feeling sorry for myself and doing every stretch I could find to target that area.
Wednesday- core + barre + full body workout + Peloton cycle
I am definitely still feeling the glute pain when I do certain moves. It is especially noticeable when I sit. Cycling seemed okay. I got a super deep tissue massage which incorporated some active release stretching. It felt really great in a hurts so good kind of way. Fingers crossed for a pain free run tomorrow.
Thursday- 4 mile run + Dr visit
My run went a lot better today. I was still having some pain but nothing like Tuesday. I was able to get in a last-minute Dr appointment with my Regenerative Orthopaedist. We call him Dr. Feelgood in our running group. After a sonogram and some physical tests, he determined that it was the muscle under my Piriformis called the obturator that is inflamed. He did not see any tears or real damage just inflammation.
After discussing a few options, we decided to do a steroid shot with some lidocaine. He feels that this will reduce the inflammation within 24-48 hours and that I will be feeling back to normal. It was a spicy one! Fingers crossed it works.
Friday- 2.5 mile walk + upper body Peloton
I slept so well last night and woke up feeling so much better. I went for an easy walk around the hood and just did an easy upper body workout.
A package from Brooks running really brightened up my day! Their new line of reflective run gear is fantastic.
Saturday- Peloton core and upper body
I took another easy day to let things settle down in the glutes area. I am feeling a lot better and more optimistic. We took a friend out for a birthday afternoon tea at one of the Wash DC hotels. It is always nice to get out of the athletic clothes.
Sunday-On the plan a run of some sort
I am going to play it by ear and see how I feel out there today. With 2 weeks until the Maine Half marathon, there is not much I can do at this point. I am just hoping to be pain-free by then. It’s been a week for sure!

Oh yes, the Piriformis “vicinity” is a nasty area to have under fire. I have had some recent tightness there as well, and sitting really intensifies the discomfort. I hope your able to get things under control prior to your race. Sending you healing vibes <3
Deborah Brooks says
It is not fun at all. I hope I can too thanks
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Oh man, I hope the shot takes care of the pain and inflammation and you start healing soon! It sounds like so far, so good, right?
Your new Brooks reflective gear is cute!
Thanks for the linkup and have a great week!
Deborah Brooks says
It is helping a lot but I still feel it. Hoping it continues to take effect
Coco says
Sorry you had to learn about a new muscle the hard way. I hope the treatment does the trick!
Deborah Brooks says
yes, me too 🙁
Darlene says
Oh no. Sorry to hear about your pain.
It seems to be a common one one of my friends had that and now another does. She’s going to PT.
Hope the shot does the trick.
See you soon!
Deborah Brooks says
I hope so too! thanks
Jenny says
NOOOO! But it sounds like you’re being very proactive to get this taken care of. That area is so complicated, it’s hard to figure it out on your own (so many muscles- I’m guessing you’ve never even heard of the obturator before.) Hopefully this shot will take care of it. Good luck!
Deborah Brooks says
No, I have had no previous experience w the obturator but I guess as a massage therapist you have. My guy got in there pretty deep and it helped.
Michele Heller says
Those pains are always worrisome. So glad it wasn’t too serious and sounds like you are on the mend. I love the Brooks outfit, so cute.
Deborah Brooks says
Not a fun injury to have at all! Yes the Brooks gear is super cute
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Oh no, glute pain was my nemesis for years. I truly hope yours is just a passing thing and it feels better fast! No one has time for that!! Love the reflective Brooks tank top. Those would be great packages when they arrive. Like a birthday gift! Fingers crossed you are doing better already.
Deborah Brooks says
You are right no one has time for that! I remember when we both had that high hamstring pain at the same time. I am hoping this heals faster. Yes, it is fun to get the Brooks gear boxes I am very lucky!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Oh no I am so sorry, but it sounds like you have it under control. If the shot works, I think you’re golden — you’ve already done the hard work. Fingers crossed for you, Deborah!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks Judy it is doing better but still there. I am hoping a few more days will do the trick
Liz Dexter says
Oh no, not the piriformis! I somehow twanged mine during an under-prepared half marathon and had some deeply unpleasant massages to sort it out. Hope your resolves quickly!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes, it is not a pleasant one!
Michelle says
I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this! Keeping my fingers crossed for you that this course of treatment can get you to your starting line pain-free. Hang in there my friend!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Michelle I hope so too
Jessie says
It sounds like you’re taking all the right steps Deb. Fingers crossed it all works ahead of your Maine race!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so much me too!
Wendy says
I had a feeling the steroid would be next! Hopefully, it will calm that inflammation. Yes, those shots hurt!
I’m loving the RunVisible gear. I haven’t tried the leggings yet but they look cute on you!
Deborah Brooks says
I am glad I got the steroid and I am optimistic. It still hurts but it is getting better. Thanks!
Kim G says
Ugh – I’m so sorry that you are dealing with piriformis pain. It sounds like you are taking all the right precautions to make sure it goes away so you can do your race next month. Hoping that it feels better soon!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks Kim it is super annoying timing for sure!
Jenn says
Oh, how frustrating. I do hope you are feeling back to yourself soon. That being said, your tea looks so fun! I love doing things like that.
Deborah Brooks says
thanks I am doing everything I can think of to make it happen
