While there is always talk of “frustration in Washington”, those of us who are lucky enough to live here and in the surrounding suburbs find lots to love about the DC area. I’m sharing a few of the reasons why I love living in Washington: runner’s Edition.
Washington DC runner’s edition
Living in and around Washington DC and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs offers many perks to runners and outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. Let me share my Washington, DC runner’s edition.
Any run can be “monumental”
Within just a few minutes, you can find views of the historic buildings, monuments buildings recognized around the world. It’s pretty easy to walk or run the historic sites and take in the views. Those of us living here probably take for granted all of the majestic sights we see on a regular basis.
not every run has to be monumental
Our Virginia suburbs offer miles of paved trails that provide us the opportunity to run safely in Virginia or allow us to run into the city. A local Washington runner’s fave route is to take the trails into Georgetown.
Pretty good weather (minus August)
If you don’t count August which is horrendous humidify, our weather is pretty temperate. Winters here do not see too much ice and snow and it’s pretty easy to run all around. Some of us actually love our winter weather!
Tons of races big and small
The DC area is home to many large, popular races such as the Cherry Blossom 10m, Marine Corps Marathon, Army Ten Miler, Rock and Roll races, and the GW Parkway Classic. These make DC a great destination running city.
Close to other major Cities
If you can’t find enough to hold your interest here in DC, we are just a short train ride away from Philadelphia and New York City. Perfectly situated for a weekend getaway!

I love running in DC! Its crazy how its really not that far from here in terms of mileage, but can take SO long to drive there, otherwise I would go more!I guess thats another perk of DC running- avoid driving through all the crazy traffic!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes the traffic from MD can be tough but weekends are usually pretty good

I really need to come run with you in DC someday! I’ve only been once and that was because my plane landed there on my way to Maryland.
Deborah Brooks says
yes you do need to return sometime for real

yes, we do have lots of races and never visit in August 🙂

Okay, you’ve convinced me! Your area really does sound amazing, and your photos are beautiful. If there’s only one month of the that’s unpleasant, I would say you’re definitely winning!
Deborah Brooks says
Ha I think so!
Darlene S Cardillo says
Ok you’ve convinced me. I need to visit you.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes you should!

Sigh… I wish I lived there, or at least much closer. I’d love to have instant access to all the DC attractions, especially the monuments.
Deborah Brooks says
We are very lucky to have so much nearby
Jenn says
So true! I think it holds for any “metropolitan” area. I like in a semi-rural area, but within 30-40 minutes, I can be at the beach, in a historical area, in an urban area, in the burbs, or on a trail. Also, we have tons of races. It’s nice.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes its nice to be in an area like that
Debbie says
I’m even worse than you about taking our city for granted. I haven’t been in DC since before Covid when we rode Bike DC. And yes, we have several great races in the area!
Deborah Brooks says
wow over 3 years! I think you are due for a visit
