I always feel like October starts off the crazy busy fall schedule for me and this year is no different. Joining in on the weekly wrap and saying Hello October with a quick snapshot of my week.
Hello October
Monday- early strength training 60 min. + Empty Bowls charity event
Got in a quick strength training session. Legs were still quite tired from the Rock The Creek Relay the day before. Had the opportunity to attend a unique charity event to benefit the National Capital Area Food Bank. A group of local students and artists created and donated ceramic bowls for the event. Attendees then choose a bowl and have it filled with soup from local restaurants who also donated their food. A creative way to get the community involved in an important fund raising initiative.
Tuesday- 4 mile run
So wanted to skip this run and just go back to sleep. Sometimes the race day tiredness hits me 2 days later. This run had a lot of walking breaks but hey every step counts right?
Wednesday- 2 mile walk + 90 min strength training and boxing
Celebrating #MeanGirlsDay with an early morning power walk #OnWednesdaysWeWearPink.
Thursday- 4 mile run
Hello October where are you? Today’s temps hit almost 90 degrees. What is up with that? So ready for those cooler fall temps we hear are supposed to arrive right about now. We did get a “cool” photo though.
Friday- rest day
Took the day off and hung out with my son who is home for fall break this weekend. This mama is happy. Enjoyed a yummy pizza for dinner. I swear carbs are my sole mate and I am convinced that is why I had a much better run the next morning.
Saturday- 8 mile run
Went back to doing some shorter intervals and finally had a much needed better run. Was it the company, or the shorter intervals or maybe just the pizza? I am not sure but I’ll take it!
Sunday- hot yoga on the plan
Perfect post run stretch that leaves me feeling energized.

That Empty Bowls charity event sounds really interesting. I think more cities should definitely do something like that to help raise awareness.
Also you already know that pizza is my soulmate lol.
Deborah Brooks says
It was a great charity event and I hope to be able to attend it again. Ah pizza why are you so good 🙂
Wendy says
Pizza is definitely my soul mate…lol I eat it a lot pre-race!
Nice week of running for you!!
Deborah Brooks says
I know pizza is so good and a great pre run food for me for sure. Things don’t go well when I try to cut carbs 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
I LOVE my carbs, even when I don’t need to carb-load 😉 I have always eaten pasta the day (or so) before a big race. It’s what I know, and has always worked for me. If pasta is not available, pizza will do 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Yes my 2 favorite meals as well! I could live off of them for sure
HoHo Runs says
Nice week! I usually feel pretty good on day one but then my tiredness/soreness hits on day two. I’m glad you got to enjoy visiting with your son. My youngest is headed home in a few days for his fall break. Your Thursday photo is very cool! Thanks for linking.
Deborah Brooks says
Enjoy your visit with your son too! It’s so nice when they come home for a few days

Where is the fall weather?? This heat and humidity has lingered for way too long! I also find that I do better on a long run when I eat some extra carbs the night before.
Deborah Brooks says
Looks a little cooler this week-fingers crossed
Lesley says
I had lasagne last night to prep for my race today. I love carbs and there’s no way I could cut them out of my diet.
Deborah Brooks says
I know why are they so good!?

Can’t wait to see your salad tomorrow! Have a great rest of Sunday
Deborah Brooks says
thanks friend you too!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
Would you believe I’ve never actually seen Mean Girls? lol. I kept seeing that meme on Facebook and I just shrugged my shoulders. I actually had to look it up so I knew what it meant. Ha!
Pizza is the BEST. And yes, ALL the carby foods before a long run. They just taste so good!
Deborah Brooks says
Pizza is definitely my soul mate!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I tend to get hit with race day sleepiness two days later as well. Looking forward to the salad!
Deborah Brooks says
OH it’s so yummy and vegan 🙂
Coco says
You did get a VERY cool picture! I think it’s supposed to be cooler this weekend – fingers crossed. I’d love to meet you for hot yoga soon — it’s fallen off my schedule recently. Yay for weekends with our boys. 😉
Deborah Brooks says
I tend to do better w yoga in the fall and winter. I do always feel better when I do it though
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I definitely do eat more carbs before a long run, and yes, I think it helps. I am not on the whole fat adapted train.
That fundraiser sounds way cool! I love anything ceramic. I’m not really quite ready for soup yet, although this weekend is supposed to be very cool so maybe we’ve finally turned a corner.
Deborah Brooks says
I have tried the fat adapted runs and they just don’t work out well for me. My brain says it’s soup time, but the weather is not quite cooperating yet
Cari says
I wish I could eat more pizza or carbs. THey & my stomach with a run the next morning don’t work. It’s a combination of being a late eater due to my schedule and slow digestion I think. Wonder if I could for lunch. May try that one day.
LOve your floral theme at the charity event
Deborah Brooks says
Yes having them for the lunch the day before is probably a great idea!
chaitali says
It’s crazy how the weather keeps going back and forth! It looks like this week is more Summer weather again.
Deborah Brooks says
I know! I am really over this humidity
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I LOVE pizza too, haha! I’d eat it every day if I could! Nice job with your workouts, and I love that picture of your group on the bridge!
Deborah Brooks says
Why does pizza have to taste so good?
Hannah says
The Empty Bowls event sounds great!
I’m not sure I eat more carbs before a long run, but then I eat quite a few carbs in general.
Deborah Brooks says
The charity event was really nice I was glad that I was invited
Teresa says
Love the “Empty Bowls” idea …what a great fund raiser!
I have had the exact same experience with carbs as well… two weeks ago I didn’t eat any carbs the night before my long trail run and I struggled the entire 13 miles. This past Friday, I ate carbs all day long and felt wonderful on Saturday morning …could’ve ran more! Carbs and a great group of friends definitely make a run much easier. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
yes they do! The best combination ever. We need to get people to stop hating on them 🙂
Shathiso says
I love carbs before (and after) a big run! Nothing so satisfying as that!
Deborah Brooks says
I totally agree!
