Weekly Wrap A Busy Birthday Week

This week just flew by! I always feel like this time of year goes by in a flash and having both mine and my husband’s birthday in the same week is crazy busy. I am all about extending my birthday celebrations over a few days! Joining in on the Weekly Wrap is a fantastic way for me to stay accountable and gives me a terrific training log to look back on. Here’s how this Busy Birthday Week played out.

A Busy Birthday Week

Sunday- Veteran’s Day 10k

First 10K race in a long time! It was pretty cold out at the start (around 30 degrees) and we got kind of chilly waiting around pre race. This race is mostly flat course around the tidal basin in Washington, DC right near the Veteran’s Memorial and Lincoln memorial. A perfect spot to honor the occasion. Started a little too fast for me but evened out my pace and kept it steady. I was really proud of my effort and my average pace (10:02). You might recall, I had an awful summer of running and finally feel like I am getting my pace back.

Can’t beat that view! (pictured: Skirt Sports Charmed 5 Pocket tights)

Monday- 30 min elliptical + 60 min strength training

I was definitely feeling tired from yesterday’s race so opted for the elliptical instead of my 1 mile recovery run.

Tuesday- It’s my Birthday run- 6 miles + coffee and treats + coach Girls on The Run

I realize now that I needed a little more rest but it was my birthday and I was ready to run with the girls. They planned a special route ending at a local pastry shop for post run treats. I felt really tired during the run and my shins started to feel a little sore. I could certainly get used to having coffee and treats after long cold runs. I say it all the time, but my runner friends are the best and they definitely made me feel special on my birthday.

Wednesday- 30 min elliptical + 90 min kickboxing & strength training

Shins still feeling sore so I did the elliptical again. Iced some more and wrapped some Rock tape on. I never know if it really does anything or it’s psychological but starting to feel better.

Thursday- 30 min elliptical + stretching/abs + Girls on The Run

Realized I needed another day off from running. Did a light workout in my home gym. Today was my husband’s birthday so more sweets. Fortunately he prefers Red Velvet Cake which is not my thing so I was able to refrain myself.

Friday- Spin class

Felt great to get back to class with my favorite teacher after riding outside all summer. Bonus that a bunch of my runner friends were there too. Never miss a photo op!

Busy Birthday Week

My daughter came home from college and we had another birthday celebration!

Saturday-Rest day

Sunday- Hot Yoga

As much as I did not want to, I am giving myself one more day off of running. I cannot afford to get injured now and don’t want to risk it. I realized that I added back too many longer runs too soon and I need to hold myself back even if I feel good. Plus yoga always makes my body happy!

It was a crazy busy Birthday Week around here! Ready to get back on track this week and enjoy some family time together. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

You had a busy birthday week of workouts! One time my PT put physio tape on my leg and it made my ITB feel so much better! Let me add: I am a SKEPTIC. Huuuuuuge skeptic on shit like that because I couldn’t find any scientific research on it. So I wasn’t expecting it to work, but it did. Would it work on all my aches and pains? Who knows. Probably not. And of course, one thing I have always read about placebos is that they are very effective. If it works because you think it works or because it actually works, who cares?

That’s exactly how I feel about the taping. If it works great but who knows! I know it won’t do any damage

Congrats on your 10k and Happy Birthday! Hope those shins feel better. I am not sure if KT tape actually works but if it makes you feel better than its worth a shot!

Thanks and my shins are feeling better and I will test out running on them on Tuesday-fingers crossed

Again, a happy belated birthday to you! I’m envious you have such a huge group of nearby running friends. I have a couple nearby, and they are the bomb, but it would be even greater to have a bigger circle. Sounds like you and I had similar weeks, regarding rest/recovery 😉

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/19/2017 at 5:51 pm

Yes I am so very thankful for our large running group! They really are the best. Yes I definitely realized I needed more rest this week ah the benefits of aging 🙂

Happy (belated) birthday! You’re so lucky that you get to run with incredible backdrops like that! I adore the DC area and would love to do a race there sometime! And dessert for breakfast is the BEST!

I actually am a believer in KT tape. I didn’t expect it to work for my knee but it’s been seriously effective. However I DO think there can be a placebo effect in some cases!

Great birthday week! How fun to share it with your hubby and I’m glad you had a fun birthday run with your crew. My chiro applies K tape and it’s never done me wrong. Supposedly it allows greater blood flow to the area to expedite healing. I’ll go with that.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/19/2017 at 7:43 pm

That’s what they say about the tape-I figure it can’t hurt! Crossing my fingers it feels better when I start running this week

Congratulations on your 10k! How fun to be celebrating birthdays all week long. I hope you had a happy one. I used the tape for a while when it was all the rage during the Summer Olympics one year. I couldn’t tell it helped me. I hope you enjoy your time with the kids and family this week and have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thanks for linking.

Whether it’s a placebo, I use Rocktape and think it works. It could be a security blanket, but it puts my mind at ease and I don’t have to worry about my aches.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/19/2017 at 7:44 pm

Yes that’s the one I am using so I guess it can’t hurt

    Thanks

    • Deborah Brooks says

I thought I would feel that way but was surprisingly very satisfied with measuring out the carbs. It’s hard for me to judge on those

You should already know my answer to your question. I think tape is just a miracle — absolutely not a placebo. Compression socks don’t hurt, either — now that it’s cold, I’m practically living in them!

I swear my little running group plans its runs around where we can go out for breakfast. Not sure how much we’ll be meeting up in winter — we shall see!

Happy birthday again! And Happy Thanksgiving, too.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/21/2017 at 1:26 pm

I am still using the tape-It doesn’t hurt right?! I may pull out the compression socks too

    11/21/2017 at 9:45 am

Happy Birthday week to you and the hubs …looks like you guys celebrated to the fullest!! Congrats on a great 10k race …I love that distance! I use the Rock tape quite a bit for my ankle and I do feel like it does provide as much, if not more, support than my ankle brace without the bulk. You are wise to let those shins rest though. The one and only time I had shin splints, I didn’t think I’d ever get those suckers to heal!! Happy Thanksgiving Deborah!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      11/21/2017 at 1:33 pm

I am going to keep using the tape. I figure it can’t hurt right? Shin splints are the worst so I need to head those off. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well
