Weekly Run Down Getting Those Glutes In Gear

Thanks for joining Kim and me for the weekly run down today. This week was all about trying to get my glutes in gear. Basically, I have been on a mission to do all the stretches and exercises I can find to speed up this healing.

Weekly Run Down

Monday- upper body strength + core + mobility and neighborhood walk

I am still giving my lower body a little bit of a break so I skipped the lower body strength. Strength and mobility classes always feel good and I did an old favorite class. It was so nice out that I opted for an easy walk outside instead of a cycle ride.

Tuesday- 6 miler run + stretching and mobility work

Well, the Glutes and Obturator muscles are still not happy. The shot of steroids helped a little bit but I am still having some uncomfortableness while running. I managed an easy 6 miles with a few walk breaks. It was really hot and humid out today and that did not help at all.

weekly run down

Wednesday- core + hip/glute mobility + upper body strength + 2 mile walk

Tons of hip and glute mobility and strength work. I figure it can’t hurt to do everything I can think of. Or maybe it can? Who knows? I opted to take a nice leisurely neighborhood walk instead of cycling today. Walking does not seem to both my glute area at all.

Thursday-5.5 mile run + stretching/mobility and barre

I did a much longer warm up today and I think feeling less pain during my run today. I still have a way to go but it’s getting there. We were anxiously awaiting the arrival of fall on this humid and warm run.

weekly run down

I do clamshells and bridges pretty much every day but, doing standing clamshells seemed to hit my glute muscles in a different way. This is how I did them.

Friday- core + hip/glute mobility + Peloton cycle

I realized I hit my 800th Peloton cycle class while doing a cool down ride. It wasn’t a live ride so no chance of a shoutout but at least it was with Denis. I do love the motivation of the milestones.

weekly run down

Saturday- Run 8.5 miles + stretch

It was so nice out this morning that I switched up my run and headed out to take advantage of the cooler temps. My butt area is still more painful than I had hoped it would be at this point. I managed 8.5 miles with a few walk breaks. I think I can make the 13.1 next weekend in Maine but it will not be pretty.

weekly run down

We got a last-minute invite to the Elton John concert at the National’s Stadium. It was really fun to see him again for his last tour.

Ooh, standing clamshells look fun! I have to really warm up my glutes these days before starting out. Sounds like you are steadily improving.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 8:36 am

I have to keep on top of the warm ups as well. It is slowly improving I think

Sorry you’re not feeling 100%. Hopefully a little rest and stretching this week will get you in shape before the half. Good luck!

      09/25/2022 at 8:36 am

Thanks not ideal conditions but I think I will make it through

Sorry about your injury. You still got a lot of Miles in. I only run 3 during weekdays and instead of a long run ran a 5k race.

    Congrats on your Peleton milestone.

Elton John must have been awesome.

    See you soon.

Walking is the way to go to stay uninjured. We’ll have fun.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 8:37 am

Yes, I know it will be fun. Not ideal conditions but I think I can make it through fingers crossed

Ugh, I am so sorry this flared up and is not dying down yet. I would lay off the glute exercises this week and keep my fingers crossed for next weekend.

LOL on hitting a milestone during a cooldown ride. They need to update the upcoming milestone algorithm to give you more warning!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 8:38 am

Yes, not ideal timing for all of this but I think I can make it through. Yes, a heads up on milestones would be great

Those standing clamshells look interesting. Not sure if I’m coordinated enough to do them, tho, lol. I’m so sorry you are still hurting. I feel you on the lack of preparation for your half. Finishing is the goal for mine!

Congrats on 800 rides. Incredible accomplishment!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 8:42 am

You can hold onto a wall while doing the clam shells as well. They seem to hit in a different spot that feels good. Finishing is definitely the goal this time

  6. Marcia says

    09/25/2022 at 8:32 am

Cheers to 800 rides! That’s amazing! Sorry the glute is still giving you trouble. Fingers crossed it behaves enough for you to have a decent half. How great to see EJ! You look beautiful!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 8:43 am

WE had a really fun time last night and it was fun to see him on his final tour. I am still not used to being around so many people again! Yes, not ideal situation going into the half but I think I will get through

  7. Debbie @ Deb Runs says

    09/25/2022 at 9:14 am

Oh man, I hope your glute area continues to improve rapidly this week and you don’t have too much discomfort during your half next weekend!

Congrats on your 800th Peloton ride! That’s quite impressive.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 12:12 pm

thanks Deb I hope so too. I know I will finish but it won’t be pretty

  8. Jenny says

    09/25/2022 at 9:53 am

Ugh, I’m sorry your glute is still bugging you!!! I think anything you do to keep it moving that doesn’t hurt (i mean, in addition to your runs- I know there’s a little bit of pain during the runs) is beneficial. You want as much blood flowing to the area as possible so barre, mobility, walking, etc. should all help it. I LOVE the video of standing clamshells- I’m going to add that into my run warmup tomorrow. Anyway, good luck with it. The trip to Maine should be amazing, with nice cool fall weather for you!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 12:13 pm

Thanks I know you feel me! I do think the standing glute exercises will be good for you too. I really feel them and will keep doing them for sure

  9. Kimberly Hatting says

I’m gonna try those standing clam shells. My glute issue doesn’t really hurt, but it just feels strained and like the range of motion is compromised. It’s definitely uncomfortable, but not debilitating…but UGH!!!!! Bad timing (as always, LOL). Elton John gives a great performance, doesn’t he? I’ve seen him twice (on his own, and then with Billy Joel).Hope your aches/pains mellow out some more.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 12:14 pm

The standing glute exercise is really good and I feel it in a different way. I believe it is beneficial to everyone. Let me know what you think. Yes Elton was great to see again

I have what I believe to be high hamstring tendonitis, so a different sort of pain. It’s been on again off again for years, but usually doesn’t bother me too much (although some days more than others. Hope you have a blast at your half!

I imagine that Elton John would be a ton of fun! Glad you finally got some cooler weather.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 3:36 pm

I have had that high hamstring issue before as well. Also not too fun but mine resolved quickly w prolo shot. Elton John was super fun to see

  11. Jessie says

A last minute Elton concert sounds pretty cool! I hope your glute doesn’t prevent you from completing your half. Thinking of you!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/25/2022 at 3:37 pm

Thanks I will make it through it will just not be pretty. That is ok, I am excited for a weekend away w my friend

  12. Cari says

I saw Elton John in 2000 or 2021, so amazing and I’d absolutely see him again. Hope you enjoyed. Happy 800! I agree on standing clamshells, and banded even while laying down. Why you have to be so mean, glutes!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/26/2022 at 7:33 am

He was a fun concert and it was nice to see him one last time. Yes, on the glutes it is complicated

  13. Kim G says

    09/26/2022 at 4:51 pm

I’ve never done standing clamshells – those look interesting! Congrats on 800 rides – you can never go wrong with a ride with Denis, even if it wasn’t a live ride 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/27/2022 at 11:17 am

That is true Denis always delivers and it was fitting for me. Let me know if you try the standing clam shells I like them

  14. Jenn says

    09/26/2022 at 5:48 pm

I’m sorry you’re still having discomfort. That’s frustrating.

Elton John puts on amazing show. I’m so glad you got to see it.

Standing clamshells seem fantastic! I hope they help give you some relief.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/27/2022 at 11:17 am

      Thanks I hope so too!

I’m really sorry you’re still having glute issues 🙁 I’ve never seen standing clamshells before – I have a hard enough time with the traditional ones lol!

You did great with your mileage this week despite the discomfort. You’ll make it through your half!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      09/27/2022 at 11:17 am

Thanks I sure hope so. I love the standing clam shells and will keep those around. Let me know if you try them

I do feel like hitting the strength workouts is the way to get those glutes in shape, or at least that what my PT always make me think! Standing clamshells are interesting. I’ve never seen that move before! I hope all of the work it helping you.
