Triathlon season is right around the corner! Early spring is the perfect time to do a Pre-season check list to make sure you are all set to rock that swim, bike and run.

Triathlon Pre-Season To Do List

Swim

-Check you goggle straps for any sign of fraying or wear

-Test out your goggles for any cracks in the lenses. Nothing worse than getting water in your goggles!

-Replace your swim caps

-Check your gear bag to make sure nothing has gone missing (buoys, flippers, paddles)

-If you have not done so already, start thinking about your swim schedule for the season

Bike

I am a fair weather outdoor bike rider and my bike sits in my garage for about 5 months during the winter months so it is important for me to make sure everything is in good shape.

-Bring in your bike for a tune up

-Check your shoe clips for any wear and tear and replace if necessary

-Check your helmet for any signs of cracks or deterioration

-Replace your bike gloves

-Make sure your bike bag contains all items necessary to change a flat tire

I recently did a bike refitting and learned that my handlebars were too wide for my shoulders and that my seat was too far back. Probably explains why my neck was bothering me on longer runs. I am hoping these small tweaks will help me feel more comfortable on the bike.

Run

The least gear intensive part of the race!

-Check your shoes for signs of wear and tear

-Inspect your tri shorts for wear

Not necessary but nice, I like to have a cute new tri suit each season. I am on the hunt if you have seen any cute ones!

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

OMG, that tri suit is adorable! I want one & I don’t tri. 🙂

I won’t even tell you how old my swim cap is . . . like decades, maybe? But I just swim for fun/cross training.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/23/2016 at 8:23 am

Swimming for fun is great! I do find I need to replace my goggles and cap every season. Cute tri suits are required for sure 🙂

My poor bike needs some TLC. After the crash, my handlebar tape came loose and is all stained from the mud I slipped on. There’s mud all over the frame. But it’s still my reliable friend! I do carry stuff for changing a flat but since I don’t know how to do it, it’s kind of a placebo….

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/23/2016 at 8:30 am

Ok so confession I carry stuff too but couldn’t do it myself either. I have a bike maintenance course on the schedule. Sounds like your bike does need some TLC. I was excited to get new tape and she looks so nice now. Now I just need it to warm up enough to use it! I admire you biking out there in the cold. I can run in the cold but do not like to bike in it

I admire you and all triathletes so much! I think running is difficult enough. Can’t imagine biking and swimming as well. Sounds like you’re all set for a successful tri season! Good luck!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/23/2016 at 8:32 am

Thanks! It’s a lot of fun really and since each sport is shorter it’s great cross training and anyone can do it!

I don’t have a tri to do list but I do have a race/running to do list! Guess I should get on booking those hotels! Thanks so much for sharing and linking up 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

I was surprised by how quickly some of the race hotels book up!

Great list! For someone who has never done a tri (but is considering one in the future), I would definitely need as many tips I can get. Love your tri suit! 😀

Great tips! I have such admiration for triathletes, I don’t think I could ever do it! I really want to buy a new bike, not sure if it’s in the budget this year though!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/23/2016 at 2:09 pm

I started with a used bike to see if I would like it. You can find great ones out there

I don’t tri, I should try to tri but I am sharing this post with a friend who does. In fact as well as she’s taken to tri’ing it just might make me, you know want to try it…. Thanks Deborah! 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

yowa! Lots of gear to account for LOL I’ve only done one duathlon, and no tri’s in my (immediate) future, but I do want to conquer that water thing someday 😉 I’m glad I have lots of others to sit back and watch 😉

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/23/2016 at 2:10 pm

I’d like to do a DU this year too if I can find one. Yes very gear intensive for sure

  17. Sarah says

    03/23/2016 at 3:32 pm

I’m determined to find a tri without swimming! Maybe with paddle boarding or kayaking instead!
    Pinned just in case though.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:03 pm

Ha ha let me know how that goes! 🙂

  18. Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says

    Awesome to do list!
I’m not a triathlete (yet) but my sister does them and does a great job in them. Truthfully, running is expensive enough, when I see how much she has to spend on things I cringe. LOL
Oh and that pink and black tri suit OMG probably the cutest I have ever seen. I’ll have to send a link to this for my sister, she doesn’t have nearly that cute of one, and I think she should get something besides just black, LOL

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:03 pm

Gotta have the cute tri suit!

  19. dixya @ food, pleasure, and health says

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:04 pm

The swim part is the shortest you can do it. Lots of people do them and breaststroke. It’s great to find one in a pool to start with

  20. Autumn @AutumnPTW says

    03/23/2016 at 7:11 pm

Love it, That suit is awesome! Great tips, looks like you have a great plan. Have a great race!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:05 pm

I never thought of that either but it is more comfortable now. I can let you know who I used if you are interested

  22. [email protected] says

    03/23/2016 at 8:04 pm

Being a Trialthlete can get pretty expensive. I’m glad I chose the cheap activity. Running! Haha. Well not necessarily just bc it doesn’t need extra equipment there are still expenses. Fuel, hydration belts, etc.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:05 pm

Yes triathlons do require a lot more gear for sure

  23. Jenn says

    03/23/2016 at 8:07 pm

Posts like these make me want to do a tri. But there’s just so much stuff! Sounds like you are already for tri season and ready to go! I’ll be following along to see how you rock your season!

  26. Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says

    03/24/2016 at 8:19 am

I actually have “new” tri suits because I’ve only done 2 triathlons and never really got a chance to wear them out. Especially considering that back when I thought I was going to be a triathlete I sort of stocked up. 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/24/2016 at 3:07 pm

Sounds like your suits are waiting for you to make a comeback 🙂

  27. Cailee says

  29. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

I’d really like to try a triathlon soon! I feel like I need something to keep me going in the obstacle racing off season- May is my last race and I don’t have another one on schedule until September! Your triathlon suits are so cute!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/26/2016 at 9:00 pm

I love tri races in the summer bc they allow you to run less mileage but offer you a challenge at the same time. You would be great at it!

    04/01/2016 at 5:26 am

You’re an inspiration to women like me. After having babies, I never quite got around to making myself fit again. i am pumped up now to start running again!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      04/01/2016 at 8:55 am

That is so sweet really! It takes a while to get your mojo and your body back after having kids. Hope you are enjoying your running

I would not say I have a favorite but I like the TYR silicone caps. Happy swimming
