In case you missed my post last month, I have my first client! Yup it’s my hubby! My husband, in a moment of weakness, agreed to train for a 5k on December 6th with me as his coach. So here we are at month 2 already and it’s time for an update on how he is doing.
We’ve been using a couch to 5k plan with run/walk intervals. He pretty much stayed on schedule the first few weeks and the plan started off pretty slow and easy. He began running 2 min/walking 2 min. Those intervals slowly increased throughout the month.
The hubs decided he needed new shoes as he was having some shin soreness. I love shopping for new shoes, even if they are not for me. On the way to the store, he informed me that he really “doesn’t like running” yet. What? Aren’t you feeling that surge of adrenaline and sense of accomplishment after your runs?, I asked him. Apparently, “no” not so much. Well maybe some new shoes will help!
We headed to Runner Runner Sports and did the full analysis on the treadmill to see which shoes they recommended for him. Funny story: While he was being analyzed and fitted, he overheard a conversation I was having with the manager about shoes and new styles etc.
Hubs: “Do you realize you just wasted 20 min talking about running & shoes?”
Me: “I know! Fun- got some good info!”
The look on his face was priceless. He has zero patience for this type of “nonsense”. Yup we are on 2 totally different levels here. I still have hope though you never know!
The new shoes apparently did the trick! While away last weekend, he hopped on one of those treadmills that allows you to virtually run in tourist spots around the world. He was scheduled to run 7 min walk 3 x 3. He came back in to report that he ran 22 min straight! He didn’t stop for the walk intervals.
Hubs: “I just got in the zone and really enjoyed the scenery and the time just flew by! Has that ever happened to you?”
Me: ” Ah yes!! (insert sarcasm) I believe it has!” (Finally!)
Although the hubs would never admit that he likes running, I think that he is starting to. He is realizing that he can run farther than he thought. I also think he is enjoying the rewards he is getting from me (wink wink). I do like a man who sweats!
We are now 10 weeks out from the 5k so lots of time to get to 30-35 min of running comfortably. Goal for month 3: run outside at least once to see how it feels. All of his runs have been on the treadmill. Training is going really well. Stay tuned for updates next month.
Tell me…Can you get your significant other to run with you?

Me and my husband are known around here as Team Homan, so yeah we run together! (or used to before kids!) Sounds like he is doing great…realizing you can do more than you thought is always a good confidence boost!
Deborah Brooks says
How fun that you both run together I hope that will eventually happen for us too
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I love that he is progressing, if even he doesn’t always realize it, lol. And wasting 20 minutes talking about running shoes??? GASP
Deborah Brooks says
He is progressing and I am excited to see how this next month goes.
Tamieka@fitballingrunningmom says
How awesome!!
My husband and I really struggle to workout together. He won’t take advice from me and he swears he knows everything-lol! I could probably get him to run with me but we would be so competetive-lol!
Keep up the good work (both of you!). Can’t wait for the month 3 re-cap!
Deborah Brooks says
Well there’s that too. Now he thinks he knows a ton about running 🙂 men!!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I can’t even get my husband to go for a walk with me, much less run! I absolutely love that you are getting your husband moving.
Deborah Brooks says
Well it’s a fairly new thing for us but so far so good. I am glad he is willing this time. WE shall see.
Marcia says
Sounds like he is ever so gradually slipping into the vortex! Good work!
Deborah Brooks says
I hope so! That’s my secret plan 🙂
Kelli says
This is fantastic! My husband will not run with me, although he has been walking on the treadmill for about 6 weeks now and has lost 20 pounds (how do they take it off so fast? not fair!)
Deborah Brooks says
I know seriously! Sounds like we have some of the same challenges 🙂
MCM Mama Runs says
Beer Geek decided he was going to walk the 5ks each day at the series I just did. Well, he walked the first day, run/walked the next two, ran the next two (while carrying his camera and taking pictures LOL), and then straight up ran the last one. And almost broke 30 minutes in his very first running 5k. Stinker.
I think I might have converted him LOL.
Deborah Brooks says
Well that’s impressive!! I thought he was a runner all this time.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
This is so awesome. He sounds like the Hubs who also has ZERO patience for shopping. He’s such a pain in the store I rarely bother to bring him! haha!
I’ve worked on getting him to run with me, but he is still on that “I’m allergic” mentality. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
We have to fight through that ourselves over here too. You never know!
Annmarie says
So awesome! I wish my hubby would get into running…probably will never happen though 😛 Thanks for linking up 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t know that he will get into it but at least it’s a step in the right direction.
HoHo Runs says
My husband ran in his younger days and can tell you all about his 6 minute miles (sigh). I doubt I could get him to run with me these days. He has his own thing…golf. You are doing a fantastic job as coach!
Deborah Brooks says
It’s not an easy task! Don’t give up on your hubs yet you never know
Joanna @Makingmine says
Maybe I should have you take me running shoe shopping – I think it’s SO stressful, haha! I can never tell what I’m going to like long-term!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh yes anytime!!
Chaitali says
Yay, that’s awesome that he’s beginning to enjoy it! I think Mike is beginning to enjoy it as well. I’ve even heard him talk about maybe continuing to run after the 5k is over 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
That would be really nice! I hope he does continue it and not just be one and done.
Ivanna says
I love that your hubby is your first client. I am sure he is happy to have your support and encouragement also. I think training family and friends is the best way to gain some experience. Best of luck to him!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks so far so good!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
I bet he’ll like it by the end, especially after he crossed the finish line :). Will HATES running. I’ve gotten him to do a few obstacle course races with me, but if I suggest run a normal race he’d give me the death stare haha.
Deborah Brooks says
Well I have gotten the death stare a few times over the years!
[email protected] says
My husband ran my first half-marathon with me. He hated the entire training, and he has not ran since (other than a 5k family color run I made him do….oh and he is doing another charity 5K next month), but otherwise, he still complains that his legs hurt and will never be the same after that half almost 3 years ago now!
Deborah Brooks says
Wow! Ok that;s interesting. At least he still does 5k’s and that is enough to keep you in shape. I don’t ever see mine doing anything more than that.
Jamie says
I convinced my boyfriend to run a 5 mile road race with me three months after we started dating. A year later, he ran his first marathon! To say I got him hooked would be an understatement 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
OH wow that’s great to hear!! You must really wield some serious power over there!!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I’ve told you before how interested I am in following this! You know how much I’d love for my husband to start back running and enjoy it like I do. I could so relate about him not really feeling the high yet. I didn’t feel it when I started for quite some time either, I do hope he gets to that point! Isn’t it funny too how we can tempt our husbands with a new “something” to get them interested too. I also caught the *wink wink! Loved this! Look forward to next months post and a high five to him! He’s doing great, he has a lot of women behind him and wanting him to succeed!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks for your support!! Don’t give up on your husband yet. Maybe you just need to find the right motivation 🙂
courtney @ eat pray run dc says
this is great! i love that he’s starting to (kind of) enjoy it. or at least the wife benefits of it! 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
LOL what ever works right?!
[email protected] says
This is such a funny post! Too cute! I love shopping for new running shoes as well!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! We have 10 weeks to go until the race!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
This sounds so much like Vegas and I – I’m cracking up! I think she’ll like it more when she’s more used to the routine… I hope… 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I hope that happens over here! We just have to find the right motivation 🙂
Heather@hungryforbalance says
I’m glad his training is going so well!! I am trying to get my husband to sign up for the 5K with me next month, but he’s just not in to it. 🙁
Deborah Brooks says
You have to find the right “motivation” you can do it!! 🙂
Heather says
I wish. Every time I mention it there is some ailment. Whatever to each their own. I love seeing couples running I think it is really great. Maybe someday.
bakingrunner.blogspot.com
Deborah Brooks says
I think it’s great too and I am a little jealous when I see couples running together. We have not actually done that. He is doing his training on the treadmill. I don’t even know if we will run together before the race. Don’t give up yet!! We have been married for 20 years
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
As I think I’ve mentioned, getting my husband to walk the dogs with me a half mile after dinner is like pulling teeth. He’s too tired (hello, I ran 11 miles saturday?).
Another thing I can just hope rubs off by osmosis. I’ve been setting a good example for decades here!
Deborah Brooks says
I tried osmosis it didn’t work! You have to find the right motivation!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
My husband is actually a really good runner. He can take a few months off, then get back at it and still be faster than me. It is incredibly frustrating but I do love when he gets back into shape. I am hoping he will sign up for another race this year.
Deborah Brooks says
I hate that some guys can do that don’t you?! But nice that you 2 can run together.
Whitney @ To Live & Diet in L.A. says
Despite the fact that he’s not 100% sold, it sounds like you’re having some good progress!! My husband didn’t run either when I first met him. I can’t take credit for teaching him how, but I did get him started by bringing him to group fitness classes. Now he runs way faster than me! The simple fact that your husband is willing to try is awesome. Good luck on Month 3!!
PS – I totally get how a 20 minute convo on running shoes could be “fun.” I feel the same way about produce convos at the local foods market. My husband is always unamused, ha!
Deborah Brooks says
Getting him to come to group classes is great too! It is fun to workout together isn’t it?
Mar @ Mar on the Run says
don’t have an SO so can’t answer that question but YAY!!! Go him! and new shoes always does the trick!
Deborah Brooks says
They certainly help!!
Amanda says
That’s great that your husband is doing a 5K with you! My boyfriend is my total support system when it comes to running. He’s been doing it a lot longer and is really fast and strong. He always motivates me to push myself more.
Deborah Brooks says
That’s awesome and so much fun that you workout together.
Angela @ happy fit mama says
Oh that is too cute! My hubs doesn’t like to run but he will on occasion. I get so excited when he agrees to go for a run with me that it ends up being a competition. Or I should say HE thinks it’s a competition. He can’t let me out run him.
Deborah Brooks says
Ha that’s probably why he won’t actually run with me!!
Coco says
I think if I only had the treadmill I would feel differently too! LOL on “wasting” your time talking about running shoes – as if!
Deborah Brooks says
I know really!!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
This is so awesome! I keep hoping my husband will sign up for a race… he runs when he finds the time, which isn’t very often. Looks like you’re doing an awesome coaching job!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks I am certainly trying he’s not the easiest client!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
So cool!! It must be fun to watch his progress!
Deborah Brooks says
It is fun! I am looking forward to running with him at some point
Autumn says
Oh lawd, been there and done that. I hope yours works out better. If he is tight or sore, and needs to be stretch him out. Im his massage/physical therapist, thats it! lol
Deborah Brooks says
Well I expect that will happen too!
Ariana says
That’s so awesome!! Congrats to your hubby and congrats to you for being an awesome coach 😀 It’s amazing what a new pair of shoes can do, hey? 😉
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! So far so good and yes new shoes do help
Natalie says
Go hubby!! That is really cool that he is sticking with it and dare I say having fun? 🙂
I think he is going to love running outside! I can’t believe Dec 6th is only 10 weeks away… wow!
Deborah Brooks says
I am not sure he is having fun yet but getting closer 🙂
Debbie @ Coach Debbie Runs says
I love this so much! I think it’s so exciting that , first of all, your husband agreed to be your first client , and that he’s enjoying it (for the most part). That’s awesome.
My husband and I met because we were runners, at a race. And we got married at the same race 3 years later! He’s still my favorite running partner.
Deborah Brooks says
I love that story! So great and romantic
Toni says
Sounds like u r found a great job! My husband runs 3 miles 3x a week. He tells me he doesn’t really like running he just does it for the exercise. The furthest I got him to run is a 10k because I signed him up. We just have two different views of running(I love it) and I don’t think that will ever change.
Deborah Brooks says
It’s funny how some people just love it!
Jess @hellotofit says
Thanks for the update, Deborah! I can’t get Ray to workout with me…he likes to do his own thing, ha!
Deborah Brooks says
At least he does something!!
Jennifer says
Aww great update. Good work coach! I giggled when your husband asked if you really just talked shoes for 20 minutes. When Cliff came to watch one of my half marathons, I told him that lunch with my two girlfriends meant a lot of run talk!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks and of course lunch would include run talk!!
Kristy @Runaway Bridal Planner says
I think it is awesome you are doing this with and for him!
You might appreciate this. So my sister who is a hard core Triathalon girl. Well she wanted to be able to take a few trips and do some Tri’s, but she wanted to do them with her husband. Not really with him, because she’s far to competitive and let’s face it she not only kicks most girls butts, but most guys too, LOL
Anyhow, her husband who had never done anything except swim in High school. She got him waking up at 4am to go the gym, long story short she basically took him from couch to Tri this year, and a few weekends ago they competed together and ya she killed it. But her husband actually took 2nd in his age group too, and it was pretty much his first ever competive race. They came back from that trip and they asked me if I would watch their kids next month so they could go do CA and do another.
Point being, maybe in time your husband and you will find a new found hobby in running to do together and who know where it may take you!
Awesome job to your hubby, and props to you for pushing him along the right way!!!!
Deborah Brooks says
Wow how cool! I love your sister already. I don’t ever see that happening but hey you never know right. Thanks for sharing that I am off to tell him the story
Patty @ Reach Your Peak says
So awesome he is starting to run! My BF does not understand my running either. Or when I talk about running haha. I think your husband wil slowly start understanding 🙂 Can’t wait to see how the rest of training and the race goes!
Deborah Brooks says
should be interesting for sure!
Mary Long says
New shoes always make things better- no matter what the situation! I think it’s great that he is sticking with it. 22 minutes straight once he was in the zone~ outstanding!
Deborah Brooks says
I am really pleased so far!
Mary Beth Jackson says
I think this is big progress! I know you are excited! If he never gets past the 5K it is still a victory for you! Why are men so tough? I can’t get mine to commit to a regular walking program much less a run! I will say he walked Italy like a champ with no complaints! Keep up the great job!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks oh I have no illusions he will ever run more than a 5k and that’s fine. I’d just like him to keep up a regular exercise routine.
