Thanks for joining Kim and me for the weekly run down today. It seems as though many regulars here have reported some glute/hip soreness in the past few weeks. Is this an October curse or what? I thought I was on the mend after making it to the finish line in Maine last week. Well, not so fast.
The curse of the glutes and hips
Sunday afternoon, the back of my hip started to really bother me. The glute pain was still present but has been easing up. What was going on? I had no idea but of course, I am imagining multiple terrible scenarios. The pain kept me up most of the night as I could not get comfortable. The good news, I had no reaction to the flu or the new covid booster.
Monday- yoga for hips + upper body strength + 2-mile afternoon walk
Sitting seems to be the most uncomfortable position. It was a gorgeous fall day and I headed out for an easy walk.
Tuesday- 2-mile walk + barre + yoga for hips
Well, no running for me today. My hip and glutes are not happy. I got a last minute follow up with my Ortho Dr and we went with some Prolotherapy. I will be seeing my PT again Friday. Apparently, my hips are out of alignment which is causing my pain in the hips. Now, to figure out how to align my own hips. Hmmm.
I also got an RX for some muscle relaxers so at least I will sleep better tonight. I’ve had a hard time getting comfortable because I am a side sleeper. Yup, the curse is real!
Wednesday- 3-mile walk + upper body strength
I was hoping I would wake up and feel dramatically better. Nope. In fact, the back of my hip/lower back hurt so much this morning I had trouble getting my pants on. I ran a half marathon 10 days ago and now I cannot put my pants on. Seriously!? The walk seemed to help loosen things up a bit but I could not do any of my hip mobility exercises without wincing in pain.
Thursday- 3 mile treadmill walk + upper body strength
Again, I hoped to wake up and feel back to normal but no such luck. I did sleep a lot better thanks to the muscle relaxer. Since it was pouring rain, I opted for a treadmill walk. I managed some Peloton upper body classes with very light weights.
Friday- 30 min Peloton bike + light weights + PT visit
The hardest part of this workout was getting onto the bike. Once there, I was okay pedaling. I saw my PT today who worked on those knots in my hip and did some dry needling. Weird but effective. I felt so much better afterward.
Saturday- 30 minutes Peloton bike + barre + walk
I woke up feeling a lot better thankfully! I am able to move without pain. My cycling felt pretty good and I did some light PT stretches and barre. I took myself to the mall for some retail therapy. That always helps!
Sunday- On the plan-upper body weights and outdoor walk
It was a rough week over here I think I am on the tail end of this thing-fingers crossed. I realized how much extra time I have to kill when I am not running and exercising 2 hours a day. I did not run for a week and lived to tell about it!!
Darlene says
Sorry to hear you are still hurting.
Hope the rest from running does the trick.
Yes. I would have a lot more free time if I didnāt run.
Deborah Brooks says
I hope so too it has been a rough few days
Melissa says
so sorry about the continued hip pain! hopefully you are on the other side of things. I’m so interested in dry needling – was it very painful? For a rest week you were still pretty active! I hope this week is better.
Deborah Brooks says
No, surprisingly it was not painful at all it just felt kind of weird. Once I relaxed it was better
Wendy says
Ouch! is it your SI joint? I’ll be curious to hear what you learn from the PT. Hang in there. <3
Deborah Brooks says
I am sure there is some SI joint instability involved. Hoping for a better week ahead
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am so sorry to hear about all the pain, but glad to hear that you seem to be on the mend. Fingers crossed for you.
Yes, running absolutely does take up a LOT of time. Even only 3 x week which has become my norm (not completely by choice). But sometimes it is good to take a break — I am never happy when forced to take it, rather than deciding to take it.
Hugs Deborah!
Deborah Brooks says
agreed! Thanks Judy hugs received
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Oh, Deborah, I am so sorry to hear that you’re still in pain. Hopefully, the continued PT sessions will bring you relief.
Deborah Brooks says
I hope so too thanks
Coco says
Ugh, I am so sorry you are going through this. It sounds pretty serious, but glad the prolo and PT are helping. I think my hips are out of whack too. Itās so frustrating!
Deborah Brooks says
It is frustrating bc I thought I was doing everything right w so much mobility and strength work
Jenny says
ARG! How incredibly annoying!!! Yes, sleeping is really hard with hip issues if you’re a side sleeper. I forced myself to sleep on my back last week which helped, but I was not happy about it (for some reason sleeping on my back made my upper back sore- when did sleeping become so difficult???) It sounds like the dry needling really helped you. Hopefully you’re now on the right track. Oh and one more thing- retail therapy at the mall sounds perfect- I’m going to try that this week!
Deborah Brooks says
yes super frustrating as I am sure you are well aware of. Hopefully, I am on the tail end of this. Happy shopping it feels good!
Kim G says
Ugh š Not a fun week for you but happy to read that you starting to feel better at the end of the week.
Deborah Brooks says
I think and hope I am on the mend thanks Kim
Jessie says
Hmm, that’s frustrating. I’m glad you made it through the half, but sorry about all the pain…glad it seems to be getting better. Injuries are the worst. Hoping its a better week ahead Deborah.
Deborah Brooks says
thanks I hope so too. I wish I knew what started this whole thing
Michelle says
I’m really sorry you’ve been dealing with so much pain. Really hope the PT and prolo get you back to a pain-free state. Hang in there!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks Michelle I hope so too
Liz Dexter says
Oh no, this sounds horrible! I had anti-inflammatories and opioids for my back, well, I’m not going to turn into a one-woman opioid crisis because I hated the floaty feeling, and the anti-inflammatories gave me stomach ache. Fortunately I’ve managed to cut them both right back now, though I’m still scared to do all my exercises in case the pain comes back (I know!). It’s scary how quickly one can get debilitated, isn’t it!
Deborah Brooks says
I totally see how that can happen! I am not taking any painkillers right now but the muscle relaxer was nice for sleeping. Hope you are feeling good too
Kimberly Hatting says
It sounds like our injuries (ugh, that word makes me wince) are going in different directions. My hip is totally fine, but my glute/hammy (?) is acting kind of bad-attitude-ish, LOL. I’m planning on visiting the chiro tomorrow…
Deborah Brooks says
Sounds similar. Hope they are able to put you back into shape with your adjustment. Let me know how it goes
Cari says
Glad the muscle relaxers helped and you’re having some relief from Friday’s PT. Right side sleeper sort of, and yes when it flares it’s bad.
Retail therapy is the best. My Amazon arrivals are hysterical
Deborah Brooks says
everyone seems to be having some sort of glutes issue
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Oof on the pain!! My pain is traveling around from one side of my hip, to the glutes, inner leg and now it’s on the other glute! ugh. I am taking the zero cost approach of just “lets see where this all goes” plan though! You’ve got quite a group helping you out. I hope it really is going away! I am also a side sleeper and I have been using a body pillow lately too. I can feel that is not the best position, but it’s what I’m used to.
Deborah Brooks says
That strategy did not work well for me LOL I do think I am on the mend. Hope you are feeling better this week too
Marcia says
So sorry the hip and glute continue to give you trouble. So much of hip pain is due to misalignment. My sports chiro is a miracle worker on that front. Worth every penny!
Deborah Brooks says
That may be my next visit!
Jenn says
To be honest, I am sitting on the floor right now, doing my work while in butterfly and different expressions of hip openers. I have been noticing tightness, and my yoga flow on Saturday confirmed that I need to be better about the other parts of my body.
I hope you can tun this curse around.
Deborah Brooks says
OH those hips don’t lie
