Summer Skin Care Tips

  • Share
  • Tweet

Happy Friday everyone! Summer is my favorite time of the year and I love to be outside enjoying the weather and the sun as much as possible. It just makes me feel happier when it’s sunny out. I can remember the days not too long ago where I would spend hours at the pool in search of that perfect summer tan. However, the last few years, I’ve started to see the signs of aging that the sun contributed to and I’ve started to take better care of my skin. I’d like to share some of my current Summer Skin Care Tips with you today and I’d love to hear any that you have for me.

Summer Skin Care Tips

 Visors

I am not a hat person but my MRTT visor (Headsweats) has really grown on me and I am trying to wear it more often on my runs.

mRTT| summer skin care tips

Sunglasses

A must to protect your eyes from the sun and from flying debris on my bike.

Annual visits to the Derm

I am now going to my dermatologist at least once a year for a full mole check and for her to yell at me remind me to be more vigilant about wearing sunscreen. I’ve had a few “pre cancerous” spots frozen off the last 2 years and it has made me very nervous. Also where did all of these age spots on my hands come from???

Sunscreen

I am embarrassed to admit that up until this summer, I really have not been good about wearing sunscreen to run or bike. Sunscreen always made my face feel sticky and I didn’t like how it dripped when I sweat. Last year, I found SuperGoop brand products and absolutely love them. They even have a great lip sunscreen that is perfect. All of their products also come in travel sizes so that’s a plus. You can find them all on Amazon (affiliate link).

Tinted Moisturizer

When I am not running or biking outside, I am wearing tinted BB cream. I especially like Bobbi Brown and it has an SPF of 35 built in. It’s very natural looking with a tint of color.

I know that I can be and should be more vigilant about my summer skin care but I believe I am off to a great start. How about you?

All great advice. For some reason, most of us women don’t think about wearing sunscreen when we are young, and how it will effect us when we get older. Haha

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:03 am

I know I wish I could go back and change some of my younger behavior for sure

I tried to go to your survey but it doesn’t work will try again later

I’m crazy about sunscreen at the beach/pool/ ect but don’t always throw it on before a run either. Great tips!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:08 am

I know me either! My Dr. keeps telling me how important it is

I love wearing visors. I remember to put sunscreen on my face but rarely anywhere else. Do moles come from sun exposure?

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:08 am

Yes!! Moles and freckles do. Do you get skin checks every year?

I need some moisturizer- that BB Cream looks like a good option! Hope you have a wonderful weekend <3

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:09 am

I love the BB cream bc it’s light but gives just enough coverage to smooth out your skin. Bobbi Brown products are my fave

  5. Chaitali says

    07/08/2016 at 8:50 am

I’m not a big fan of hats but I haven’t tried visors yet. That may be a good option! I just feel like with the sunglasses and headphones, it’s just too much stuff on my head if I add in a hat.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:10 am

That is how I always felt too. Visors don’t make me as hot give them a try

  6. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    07/08/2016 at 8:56 am

Great tips! I’ve realized I do like running in a visor which helps in the bright sun. I need to step it up on the sunscreen though…I never heard of Supergoop but it looks good!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:12 am

I am trying to be better about the sunscreen this year and supergoop is great.

  7. Nicole @ Fitful Focus says

With my red hair and freckles, I can’t afford to not wear sunscreen. I put it on my face everyday and all over before runs. I also started wearing a hat, which has been so helpful. Heading to the derm next week!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:13 am

Sounds like you are really great about protection-don’t want those wrinkles when you get older 🙂

  8. Sarah- A Whisk and Two Wands says

    07/08/2016 at 9:19 am

I need all the help with this I can get this week! I thought I was prepared bringing 6 tubes of good 50+SPF down there to California but nope. I ended up grabbing another because my skin is getting super dry, some color, and very wrinkly especially my neck and chest. I’ve been putting sunscreen on us every 45-50 minutes when we are out or in the pool but doesn’t seem to be enough. We aren’t burnt but still getting some color and mostly just drying out like crazy! I got the girls their own SPF lip balm, some after sun lotion, and yesterday we tried to get some hair stuff. So much for new color the day before I left, haha. Oh and my oldest burnt her scalp. I’ll have to check out the SuperGoop. We’ve been using Honest Company and down here I got Sun Bum (smells amazing and reminds me of my childhood and has a cute monkey on the bottle, haha). Hope you have a fun and safe summer Deborah sorry for my ramblings.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:13 am

  10. RFC says

    07/08/2016 at 10:14 am

I too have started really wearing a hat this summer, and it has seemingly not only made a difference for my skin (no sunburned Rudolph nose!) but helps keep me cool in the hot SC sun!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 10:58 am

It can keep you cooler for sure!

  11. Christina says

    07/08/2016 at 10:15 am

I’m a big fan of the spray sunscreen for even application, hard to reach places, no greasy hands. I do forget to put sunscreen in my hair part though, so my hair style changes over the summer as I accidentally burn my scalp. I’m also a big fan of visors!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 11:00 am

Yes I have grown to love the visors!

  12. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    07/08/2016 at 10:24 am

Summer skin care is so important. I love my headsweats visor (mine is from the Phoenix Marathon). You must have good sunscreen as well!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 11:01 am

      absolutely!

  13. Cassandra @ Powered By BLING says

    07/08/2016 at 10:44 am

I am not a hat person either! I can’t stand hats or visors on my head. Ironic, since I run with an UA Hood during the winter that covers my whole head! I like the travel size option of that Supergoop. Thanks!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 11:01 am

the travel size kit is great!

  14. Marcia says

    07/08/2016 at 10:44 am

I too love the feel of the sun but yeah those icky spots. What’s up with that? I get almost all of my outdoor workouts done before 7am so no worries about sun. But a big yes to the visor/sunglasses and I always ALWAYS use sunscreen on my face, neck and tops of shoulders.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 11:01 am

I applaud you for getting it done early that is just not me 🙂

  15. Michelle @ Running with Attitude says

    07/08/2016 at 10:44 am

I almost always wear a hat or visor when I run, and sunglasses are a daily staple for me whether I’m running or not – I find my eyes water easily if it is bright out. I also try to make sure my facial moisturizer has SPF, but I’m not always good about applying sunscreen before a run. I’ve never heard of Super Goop – will have to check them out!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 11:04 am

I am not always good about the sunscreen either but I am trying harder this year.

  16. Alaina @ The Simple Peach says

    07/08/2016 at 11:32 am

I’ve heard a lot of folks rave about Super Goop, but I haven’t tried it yet. Right now I like Aveeno sunscreen and enjoy the baby formula for my face. It doesn’t burn my eyes when I sweat.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 2:58 pm

That is a plus! I hate when that happens

  17. Mary Beth Jackson says

    07/08/2016 at 11:42 am

I love the supergoop products! I wear the tinted BB cream from Clinique- love it!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 3:00 pm

The supergoop is great isn’t it?

  18. Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says

    07/08/2016 at 12:43 pm

I also just started wearing a visor last summer. I never did because I thought they looked dorky, but now I can’t live without mine! Happy weekend!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 3:00 pm

I thought they looked dorky too! 🙂

  19. Emily @Sinful Nutrition says

    07/08/2016 at 3:36 pm

I always cover up with a big ol hat, towel, and summer dress at the beach. It’s not worth getting burnt!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/08/2016 at 5:27 pm

I know! Good for you 🙂

  20. Elaine @myRUNexperiment says

    07/08/2016 at 5:33 pm

My daytime moisturizer has SPF in it so I usually don’t put suncreen on my face (but probably need to for extra protection), however I always wear a hat when I run and sunglasses. I’m keen with putting on sunscreen when I know I’ll be spending more than an hour outside. It’s a great idea to have a derm apptment each year to check on your skin – I probably should ask my primary care dr about it at my next well check-up.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:04 am

OH yes definitely so important to do the once a year skin check. They don’t do that at a regular check up

  21. Enna says

    07/08/2016 at 5:45 pm

I use sunscreen and tinted moisturizer also! Probably more than my husband likes. He always says I smell like the pool

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:05 am

ha ha better than the alternative I guess!

  22. dixya @food, pleasure, and health says

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:06 am

I think you would really like Supergoop check them out

  24. Jen @ pretty little grub says

    07/08/2016 at 6:05 pm

Sunscreen is SO important to me. When people say they don’t like the feel of it, I tell them they just haven’t found the right brand. And even if it doesn’t feel great, I think protecting your skin is worth it.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:06 am

I was one of those people for a long time but you really have to take care of your skin. I regret not doing it sooner

  26. Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says

    07/08/2016 at 6:11 pm

I’m finally getting better about putting on sunscreen regularly this year! I’ve always been a bit lax about it. Not necessarily summer-specific, but I think staying hydrated always looks my skin look better, no matter what time of year.

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:07 am

Yes I agree staying hydrated year round helps my skin as well.

  27. Marsha says

    07/08/2016 at 6:48 pm

I use a Mary Kay tinted moisturizer and I love it! I really need to schedule my derm visit. I think it’s actually been a couple of years. I just can’t find a visor that looks right, but I wear caps….go figure! lol!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:08 am

I used to think that the visors looked goofy but they kind of grew on me

  28. Akaleistar says

    07/08/2016 at 7:51 pm

That visor is cute, and SuperGoop is a great brand 🙂

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:08 am

      I really like it!

  29. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    07/08/2016 at 8:37 pm

Oh sure, I read this now after I spent the day on the water kayaking! I did sunscreen before we went out but I never reapplied. I need to go to the derm but yes, I’m afraid they’ll yell at me! LOL

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:10 am

MY derm yells at me every time (in a nice way 🙂 )

  30. Kimberly Hatting says

    07/08/2016 at 10:09 pm

Although I look like a dork in a hat (but sometimes wear them if it’s raining), I do like visors. I’m not as vigilant as I should be with sunscreen, but I’m better now than in years past. I’m addicted to sunless tanning lotion LOL

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 7:11 am

sunless tanning lotion is great if you can find the right one

  31. Jess @hellotofit says

    07/09/2016 at 8:36 am

I’ve made a habit of buying and wearing moisturizer that has SPF now 🙂 one place I NEVER remember, but should: HANDS!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 9:04 pm

Yes definitely that is where I am seeing spots now!

  32. Christina says

    07/09/2016 at 8:41 am

I tend not to wear sunscreen on shirt runs because some direct sunlight is good for us. But as my long runs increase, I’ll need to slap some on!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 9:06 pm

      Yes definitely!

  33. GiselleR @ Diary of an ExSloth says

    07/09/2016 at 10:03 am

I tend to stay out of the sun as much as possible and use sunscreen whenever I’m out. Not sure if it helps but that’s about the extent of my summer skin care lol

    • Deborah Brooks says

      07/09/2016 at 9:06 pm

I think every little bit helps 🙂

  34. Lex @ Flecksoflex says

    07/09/2016 at 7:02 pm

Sunblock is a major must for me! I burn very easily, and I worry about getting wrinkly before it’s my time to be wrinkly!

      I hear ya!!

  36. Toni says

    07/10/2016 at 11:24 am

I have no additional tips, I think you covered it all. If I had to add something it would be to hydrate during the hot summer months because that will make your skin look better.

      Definitely!

I have fair skin and my father has had many skin cancer scares, and I have had 2 also. So I live in sunscreen. I have been preoccupied with my face skin for years and spend a ton of money on it. But I come from a wrinkly family, so I will have wrinkles. Just hoping it is later rather than sooner.
