Confession: Until a few weeks ago I had never eaten anything from a food truck! I know they are all the rage these days but they are still food from a truck right?! My first experience with a food truck was at my daughter’s graduation party last month.
We had these 2 trucks come for her party and I have to say, I’ve changed my mind about food trucks! They were really fun and really really yummy. Probably the best grilled cheese I have ever had!
I had heard about the Cinnamon Snail, a vegan food truck in New York, and was excited to see that Adam Sobel had a cookbook out based on his tasty vegan meals served on it. Street Vegan is the newly released cookbook brimming with creative and unusual vegan recipes that appeal to vegetarians and I bet some meat lovers as well.
What I found really fascinating was the Adam Sobel’s backstory. He essentially fell in love with a woman (now his wife) who was a vegan and had a mission to make healthy vegan food for her. While learning and exploring the veggie cuisine, he came to find his own passion and love for veganism. They started their food truck business together and it has developed quite the cult following. Kind of romantic don’t you think?
The recipes in Street Vegan do not attempt to pretend to look like meat versions of a dish but rather stand on their own as scrumptious looking meals that make veggie and meat lovers drool.
He offers fun BBQ options such as Smokey Portobello & Potato stuffed Poblano Peppers using cilantro and coriander for flavor. Hearty appetizers such as Chimichurri Tempeh Empanadas sound fabulous and tempting.
The recipes draw inspiration from Asian, Italian & South American cultures to offers a wide variety of flavor combinations. There is also a huge section on donuts and desserts! I’ve never made my own donuts but that might be changing soon too.
I really enjoyed reading about some of the challenges they face in New York battling the parking and zoning regulations as well as the other restaurants who feel threatened by the food truck industry. Who knew all of this was going on?
Apparently, Adam Sobel is doing something right as rumor has it, lines form down the street for his food truck offerings.
Street Vegan is not only an interesting read for the behind the scenes look at food trucks but also a great addition to any cookbook collection for those looking to go meatless every once in a while. I can’t wait to start recreating some of these fabulous looking recipes myself.
My only complaint is that there are not more photos! You can find Street Vegan in ebook and hard copy on Amazon (affiliate link)
( I received a copy of Street Vegan from Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. This post contains affiliate links.)
Thoughts on Food Trucks?? How long would you wait in line for your favorite lunch?

When I worked downtown we would eat at the “Burrito Cart” at least once a week. It was so good. I’ve heard about that grilled cheese truck. See you tomorrow for coffee!
Deborah Brooks says
The grilled cheese was amazing hope you get to check them out. See you for coffee but I might not be up as early as you are 🙂
Michelle says
Sounds really cool! My friend’s local brewery has been renting out food trucks for tasting hours. I think food trucks are a great idea! Although I strongly dislike waiting in line for food! Enjoy your weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t like waiting for food either! Not sure I would stand out 30 min for a meal myself.
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
I’ve never eaten from a food truck either! I’ve thought about it, but few have things that accommodate my needs (let’s face it, restaurants themselves have issues enough with it!), but I always hear about these incredible trucks that I want so badly to try. Plus, I am never around a food truck when I am hungry. It is always inconvenient timing!
Deborah Brooks says
I know seriously some restaurants don’t even want to switch things up for us do they?! I’ve always been a little leery of food trucks bc you know they are trucks with food. Next time I go to NYC I am going to look for this one though. The cookbook is fabulous!
jill conyers says
I’ve never eaten from a truck. It’s a mental block and my husband says I’m missing out. Always happy to learn about new vegan foods!
Deborah Brooks says
I had never eaten from one either bc it is a truck with food right? This cookbook looks amazing and I am excited to make some of them.
Mary Beth Jackson says
I love food trucks!!!! Grill cheese and the lobster rolls! You are making me hungry thinking about it. This vegan truck sounds amazing!
Deborah Brooks says
doesn’t it?! See you for coffee tomorrow I hope!
Stephanie says
I’ve eaten from food trucks before they became trendy and had some pretty good Chinese food! I am game to try the trend because some of the food just looks so good! I may have to get this book! It sounds like an interesting read.
Deborah Brooks says
The book has amazing really creative recipes!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
I too have never eaten anything from a food truck. I know they’re the new rage, so I might just have to try one out soon.
Deborah Brooks says
Apparently there are lots of good ones in Arlington.
Meghan says
I saw that cookbook in Barnes & Noble recently and was really intrigued by it! I love food trucks (and am happy you’ve crossed over to that side!), and really like that this cookbook doesn’t make the food look like meat – vegan food can be beautiful and just as satisfying in my opinion!
Deborah Brooks says
totally agree! I can’t wait to make some stuff in here.
Kate @KateMovingForward says
I’ve had some pretty awesome food from food trucks! I think I’ve probably waited 15-20 minutes in line, but that was at a big event that only had food trucks so just par fro the course. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I am way behind the curve on this one!
Jess @hellotofit says
Romantic, indeed 🙂 I like food trucks but don’t get food from them often.
Deborah Brooks says
There are a lot of them in the DC area but I never really felt the need.
Natalie says
My first experience with food trucks was a couple of summers ago. Every Tuesday evening during summer, gourmet food trucks set up in a parking lot near downtown. There are bands playing, kids running around and a really fun time. I tried a couple of dishes and the food was good! It’s become quite the rage here. It’s also big for parties!
Fun post, I’ll have to check out the book!
Deborah Brooks says
They are all the rage! I am behind the times with this one
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I feel lilke such a food failure, as I’ve never tried a food truck… something about eating out of a truck… I dunno. I’ll do it one day!
Deborah Brooks says
That is exactly how I felt but I kind of picture you as a little more adventurous!
Annmarie says
This is so interesting, I have never thought about what food trucks have to deal with. We don’t really have any around here since it’s pretty rural. In fact, I am not even sure I have ever eaten from a food truck. Going to have to check it off my bucket list next time I’m in NYC.
Deborah Brooks says
I never had either until 2 weeks ago!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I have never eaten off a food truck. When this first became “a thing”, I was a little skeptical, because my hubs, who works in construction, used to get food off those quilted trucks that frequent construction jobs. He used to call them the “roach coach”, so you can see where my fear came from!
Deborah Brooks says
I have always been skeptical too for the same reasons 🙂
Coach Henness says
I love the Grilled Cheese Truck! But I will not stand in line for food for more than 10 to 15 minutes unless I have zero other options.
Deborah Brooks says
The grilled cheese truck was sooo good 🙂
Debbie says
They now have one in Rio de Janeiro, my hometown, that I am hoping to visit the next time I go there.
Their food is “speciality” cooked for athletes, rich in protein and stuff. They do not have it in Belgium.
It is fun that if you go to a cosplay convention here, you find healthy food everywhere. If you participate in a race, all you can get is hamburger deep fried and French fries. LOL
#Fit&FashionableFriday
Deborah Brooks says
What? Deep fried burgers that is just crazy!!
Sam @ PancakeWarriors says
I’m coming to your parties from now on. Love food trucks, and I too have had the best grilled cheese of my life from a food truck, how funny! Love the idea of people finding passion in their food, I’m sure this book is awesome!
Deborah Brooks says
Now that would be fun!!
Elle says
I admit I am not really a fan of food trucks. Went to Portland, OR last Summer where they are a a very big deal and I wasn’t lured in.
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t know that I would do it on a regular basis but it was fun to try!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Oh. My. Goodness. I LOVE the Cinnamon Snail! I’m so sad Adam isn’t on the streets anymore! I’ll have to get this cookbook, so I can keep having his delicious food!
Deborah Brooks says
I think he is in NJ now maybe?! The cookbook is amazing and I can’t wait to make some of it.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Anything portobello is a winner in my book!
Hope you have a great Independence Day weekend!
Deborah Brooks says
thanks! You too!
Farrah says
I loved Street Vegan, and I thought that was a super cute story too. 😀 He sounds like an awesome soul!
I think I’d wait a pretty long time to be able to get the food that I wanted. 😡 I’d just bring something to do so I wouldn’t have to waste my time in between!
Deborah Brooks says
It is a great story!
Toni says
I haven’t eaten at a food truck In years but now that they are coming out with healthier food options I would def be open to it. Adam’s story is pretty cool, I’d love to try some of his food.
Deborah Brooks says
I know me too!
Chaitali says
I love food trucks 🙂 the back story here is so cute, and I love the philosophy of making vegetarian food that is delicious but not trying to replicate meat. That’s my general approach too. I’ll have to check this one out.
Deborah Brooks says
I would love to try his food and the cookbook is great.
rachel says
This looks yummy. Honestly, I have NEVER eaten from a food truck. Yes. It is a weird bucket list item of mine… and my husband thinks I am crazy. HAHA!: )
Deborah Brooks says
I never had either until a few weeks ago! It was so good though
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
There are SO many food trucks in Austin. I rarely eat at them just because I am still a little wary. They are very popular though!
Deborah Brooks says
I’ve always been weary as well bc you know they are trucks w food 🙂
GiselleR @ Diary of an ExSloth says
I love food trucks. I actually went to a food truck festival this weekend. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually buy anything because everything had dairy in it, but it was still a fun experience.
Deborah Brooks says
Ooh that does sound fun!
