Ah January! Tis the season where many people are looking to switch up their exercise routine a bit. Not into the gym thing? I get you. I do all of my strength training at home and only go to the gym for spinning and swimming. Over the years, I’ve built up a nice assortment of equipment to keep me motivated and excited about my home workouts. Not sure where to start? I rely on a few of the same pieces of equipment over and over again. Sharing a few of my favorite pieces to Stock Your Home Gym for success. This post contains affiliate links.
Stock Your Home Gym With These Must Haves
Bosu Ball
Probably one of the most versatile pieces around! I use it for every workout for everything from deadlifts, to hop overs to pushups. They last forever! They even come in a cute pink color now too. Check out one of my Bosu workouts here.
Resistance Bands
I use both the figure eight and the long resistance bands for all of my Home Gym workouts. The figure eight band is perfect for resisted squats, butt kicks and side walks. The long band easily hooks onto a door or banister for rows and chest flyes. They are also great to travel with.
Stability Ball
Another crazy versatile and very affordable piece of home gym equipment. I use mine for crunches and all kinds of ab work. I also use my stability ball as a unstable bench to do upper body work and planks.
Medicine Ball
Another extremely versatile and much used piece of equipment in my Home Gym. I like this medicine ball with side handles for squat throws and side lunges.
“heavy” Weights
Don’t be afraid to have a set or 2 of heavier weights at home. I use a set of 15 or 20 pound weights for dead lifts off of the Bosu and walking lunges. You can also use one heavier weight for “goblet squats” and other variations.
These are a few of my Home Gym Must Haves. They have served me very well over the years and last forever. Tell me-What are your Home Gym Must Haves?

I have all these items other than a medicine ball, which I would like to get soon! Its so nice to be able to do workouts at home.
Deborah Brooks says
It sure is amazing to have equipment at home. I have had the same medicine ball for over 10 years it is very versatile
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Buying dumbbells was expensive but it was the best investment for my home gym! I have 10-30lb dumbbell sets so I can basically do anything I need to with those. Oh, and my pull up bar! I need to put air in my stability ball but I don’t know how to do it. I bet my husband does.
Deborah Brooks says
The weights can be an investment but as you say they last forever and you can do anything with them. I need a pull up bar!
Kim G says
There’s one Bosu ball at my gym and I always try to use it when it’s available!
I have resistance bands at home that I use as part of my PT routine
Deborah Brooks says
The resistance bands are so great to have at home and bring along for travel.
Emily @ Pizza & Pull-Ups says
I would love to get a Bosu ball to have at home, they are just so useful!
Deborah Brooks says
My favorite piece of equipment to have at home!
Wendy says
You’ve got it covered! 100% agree on the heavier weights. A few years ago, I bought an adjustable weight set with plates that you can move on and off both the dumbells and the bar. It’s nothing fancy but gets the job done. I need a bosu!
Deborah Brooks says
You are right, Does not have to be fancy just has to be something you use. I do love the Bosu at home
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
I really want to get some resistance bands this year. Thanks for sharing the ones you use!
Deborah Brooks says
They are very inexpensive and you can really do so much with them.
Debbie says
Those are all great tools for a home gym! Heck, I use them for both my clients and myself at the real gym (way more than machines!). I would also love to have a TRX in my home gym.
Deborah Brooks says
I have to dig out my TRX I know I have one somewhere!
Coco says
I need a bosu ball!
Deborah Brooks says
You really do!
Lesley says
I’m still coming up with stuff I want for my home gym. I do a lot of Pure Barre and body weight exercises, but I have a stability ball, resistance bands, and dumbbells ranging from 2 pounds (for Pure Barre) up to I think 25 pounds.
Deborah Brooks says
Sounds like you are off to a great start with that gear.
Samantha Riley says
What great suggestions! I’ve hear resistance bands are great for home workouts!
Deborah Brooks says
Oh yes I use them almost every workout
Ivanna says
This is a great list of items and I actually have all of these in my home gym. You can get in a great workout with these.
Deborah Brooks says
I agree! Happy sweating
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
We only have a set of weights here… I’m one of those crazies that just loves going to the gym. I really appreciated those hand weights when I had surgery though… I could still workout my upper body in the living room when Vegas didn’t have time to help me crutch around the gym.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I know you love your gym days!
Kimberly Hatting says
Let me say it again, “I want a Bosu!!!” 😉 I have some bands that are 16 (?) years old…they are still in good shape, but I may need to consider upgrading LOL I have two sets of hand weights (8’s and 12’s) and I use them virtually for every strength workout in some capacity. And, you know, my favorite piece of “equipment” is my staircase 😉
Deborah Brooks says
You do seem to find the most creative ways to workout at home!
Akaleistar says
Resistance bands are great since they don’t take up a lot of space!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly and they can come along with you when you travel too
Abbey Sharp says
Ooh this is great! I have a gym at my place, and I definitely rely on this must haves!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! Always great to have a few pieces at home

I could definitely use a bosu, a medicine ball and some heavier weights. My home gym is pretty bare-bones right now.

Andrea says
Awesome suggestions for the home gym! I haven’t tried a BOSU ball yet, but I’ve been wanting to.

Deborah Brooks says
Great! Hope it gave you some inspiration
Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says
Love all these options! I also really like a kettlebell. And when I had the space, I enjoyed having a treadmill as well for running.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I do love having my treadmill and elliptical but I was thinking not everyone has space for those. It sure is nice when you do isn’t it?!
Jenn says
I hate working out at home, probably because I don’t have a gym (little unused office, I’m starting to look at you), but I do have most of these things. I have a stability ball that I need to inflate, too. It would definitely change the game for some of my moves.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes the stability ball can be used for so many things. I think I see that home office morphing into a home gym 🙂
Erinn says
I just got a swiss exercise ball for Christmas and I love it! I’m still collecting free weights though!
Deborah Brooks says
The exercise balls are so useful. I still find new ways to use mine all the time
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
These are great home gym items! I’ve got a lot of these as well. You’ve inspired me to pick up my bosu again though– sadly I think it has dust on it.
Hope you’ve been well!
Deborah Brooks says
Never too late to dust it off! It is one of my favorite pieces that I have
Kalee says
I don’t know if it’s sad or impressive, but I have all of these – and love them!! I also just added resistance loops for some floor work, and I love how they work my inner thighs!
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely impressive! The bands are a great addition
Annmarie says
I have all of these and they’re definitely essential! Great list!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks! I knew you would 🙂

I don’t have a Bosu ball, but I do have weights & kettlebells, resistance bands, and of course my stationary bike & treadmill. 🙂
I’d love TRX, but I don’t really have anywhere to attache them except the ceiling!
Deborah Brooks says
I have a TRX somewhere I need to find it again!
Chelsea says
Oh I absolutely LOVE this post! I’m all about having all the basic essentials for a home gym! Mine are definitely my yoga mat, a stability ball, my free weights, and my foam rollers/recovery tools!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I did not include my foam rollers in there!
Susie @ Mile High Dreamers says
I ONLY workout at home, and these are all the pieces of equipment I use the most! Even though the bosu ball is pricey, it’s SO worth it. I have these and a couple of other things and I can literally do every exercise I need!

Deborah Brooks says
The BOSU really is the best! I love all my home workout gear.
BJK says
Hah! Thank you for mentioning Goblet Squats! So many folks completely ignore them, and they are really one of my favorite exercises. I tend to use a 25/35lb kettlebell when I do them after I spend a few weeks with a 15lb dumbbell getting my legs used to it. I just like holding the horns on the kb better than I do the edges of a db.
Deborah Brooks says
I should try using a kettle bell to mix it up a bit too
wahid 891 says
Hy Deborah,
Basu ball, stability ball and medicine ball, are nice. I have read about them. but i use medicine ball…
Deborah Brooks says
