It’s that time again! Time to bare our soles and souls of all things running and otherwise. Since I’ve been on Injured reserve most of the month of October, I am sharing a few spooky runfessions and confessions from Physical therapy. Thanks for Marcia for hosting.
Spooky Runfessions and Confessions
I confess and runfess…
It has now been almost 3 weeks since my last run. Once I realized that this current hip and glute injury was going to be somewhat long term, I knew I had to find a PT that was on my insurance. I have used a great PT in the past for minor issues but she does not take any insurance sadly. This seems to be a trend with PT’s in our area.
While I specifically asked to be assigned to a PT who works with runners, I am pretty sure my PT has never run or worked with any runners. When I asked him if we could talk about a return to running program or plan for me, he said he did not have a specific plan. He even went on to suggest (and I quote) “why don’t you check out the Nike run app, I hear it’s good”. Ummm, ok? No thanks.
I confess and runfess…
I never really understood the point of going to PT to have them watch you do the same squats and lunges you can do on your own. While the massage part feels good, I really don’t see the point of the rest for someone who already does these exercises.
This all occurred right before we headed out of town this week. Needless to say, I am looking around for a PT who is specifically experienced with runners.Obviously, this has all left me pretty frustrated and annoyed. This mother runner just wants to get back to running. Is that really too much to ask?
October has proven to be a spooky month indeed! Thanks for allowing me to get those scary thoughts off my chest. See you next week for the Ultimate Coffee Date.

Boo on 3 weeks with no running. I wish I could teleport my Sports Chiropractor to you. He’s been amazing with every single issue and injury I’ve brought him over the years. I’ve had terrible experiences with PTs as well. Like they all sit and chat amongst themselves when I’m left to do the exercises on my own. Yeah that can totally be done at home. The Nike app? Geez.
Deborah Brooks says
It is the biggest waste of time and so frustrating
Coco says
WTF on suggesting the Nike App? That is nuts! I have liked the PT I’m seeing at GW. The first day she filmed me on the tread and devised a plan based on what she saw. She does watch me do my exercises, but she is carefully watching — and correcting — my form, which I’ve learned is a big issue —I have to really concentrate to keep my left knee from collapsing in on certain moves and she has taught me that.
OTOH I need to find a good sports massage person.
I hope we both figure it out soon because injured runners are scary!
Deborah Brooks says
I do have great massage people but that can’t fix this unfortunately. Sounds like your PT is working well for you. I need to find another one. I am hoping to go to INOVA but hard to get in
Catrina says
I’d be frustrated and annoyed as well!
Good grief, that Nike app comment screams “I have no idea about running”. Is there any kind of running community where you can ask for a good PT?
I’m on a WhatsApp chat of my running club. They’re over 100 people and they always have great tips for PTs and massage therapists (and who know all about running).
Deborah Brooks says
yes, I am looking around and hope I can find someone else that can help soon

I got so lucky, almost exactly a year ago, with the PT who was available when I went looking for sone help with my glutes/hammy/hip issues. She had me doing a lot of squats, etc. as well but, like with Coco’s PT, she was vigilant watching my form. She was constantly reminding to keep my knees straight, and that made a huge difference in my awareness of what I needed to continue doing on my own. I hope you find a better fit with your PT search ((hugs)).
Deborah Brooks says
yes, I am looking around and hope to find a better PT situation soon
Jenn says
Ugh, I’m so sorry.
My one big PT experience was great, because all the PTs in the practice were runners and/or endurance athletes. It must be hard to know they don’t understand your goals.
I hope that things start looking up.
Deborah Brooks says
I am going to switch to a new place hopefully soon and try to get this figured out
Jenny says
Oh, that is frustrating. It sounds like that PT has no experience with runners. Last time I went to PT (for a hip issue) they were really good, BUT they didn’t take insurance so I didn’t end up continuing with them. Sigh! It’s tricky. But you’ll figure it out, eventually. Remember that your success rate for recovering from injuries is 100%.
I hope you’re having a great trip!
Deborah Brooks says
I know you know how frustrating it can be! And thanks for that reminder appreciate it

I can’t believe he suggested the Nike app! The PT game is very hit or miss sadly. I’m getting ready to start again and am also on the hunt for someone who works with runners. It’s been 6 weeks of no running for me…sigh. Good luck – I hope you find someone good!
Deborah Brooks says
I am right behind you at 3 weeks of no running. It is really frustrating isn’t it
Darlene S Cardillo says
Boo!!
I wish you lived near me. We have a few PTs who work with runners. I prefer my chiro. She’s great and is a runner.
I hope you find one soon!!!
