September 2024 Ultimate Coffee Date
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
My husband and I have a “safe word”. No, not that kind of safe word! I guess it’s more of an “exit strategy”. What do you do when you desperately want to leave a social situation or gathering but don’t want to be rude? You use your “safe word”! For the longest time, we used the word “cinnamon” to let each other know that we were ready to exit.
It worked really well until most of our family and friends figured it out! Now, it’s kind of a joke. So we now have a new word which of course, I cannot disclose. Want to come up with your safe word? Pick something that you can easily work into a conversation. For example, “this coffee cake tastes so good, I wonder how much cinnamon is in here.”
If we were having coffee, I would tell you…
My running mojo is really AWOL. I often struggle with the summer heat and humidity, and this summer was no different. Usually, I have a fall race to train for. This year, I did not sign up for anything (yet). October and November are always my highest mileage months and I am hoping that rush of enthusiasm for running returns. Hopefully, that amazing fall weather will make an appearance and I will remember what I love about autumnal running.
That’s about all I’ve got today! If we were having coffee today, what would you tell me?

Haha, cinnamon is a good one!
Having a conversational word is better than our strategy: I look at Kai and he gives me a very slight nod. However, it can easily be picked up by others if they’re attentive. Sometimes, I also kick Kai under the table – so far, I’ve always got the right legs, but you never know!
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha on the under the table! Having a word sure does help 🙂
Kimberly Hatting says
An exit word is a great strategy for those awkward situations 🙂 I hope your running mojo returns! My mojo has been strong, but my racing mojo has kind of tanked this year…
Deborah Brooks says
For me they go together. I am hoping to gear up for a Turkey day trot next month
Marcia says
I like the idea of an exit word. We pretty much give each other “the look”. Haha! You know I haven’t had any desire to race for a long time. But the running still happens. It’s all good.
Deborah Brooks says
Running definitely occurs in seasons and cycles. Yes, it’s all good. The exit strategy is never a bag thing 🙂
Darlene Cardillo says
My racing mojo is strong but not my running mojo.
Sign up for a fun race. It will come back.
Deborah Brooks says
I have not had any interest in racing at all but hoping to ignite my running again for a turkey day race
Coco says
LOL, love that you have a safe word. I could have used one last weekend, when I was ready to go home and my husband kept starting new conversations! Finally I had to cut in and play the Scooby card — as in, we had better get home to take Scooby out. 😉
I hope you find your running mojo soon — or not? You are enjoying walking and hiking and everything else so much — it’s all good.
Deborah Brooks says
Highly recommend the exit strategy word! It is all good but I do miss the running mojo. Hoping I can gear up for a Thanksgiving trot
Erica @ erica finds says
Cinnamon is a good one but I can imagine it’s not always easy to fit into the conversation.
I can’t wait for fall weather! We had a taste in Europe and I was there for it!
Deborah Brooks says
We got really great at it! 🙂
Farrah says
hahah, I need to come up with one for my SO since he runs out much earlier than I do on the social meter and has a tendency to Irish-exit. So unfortuante that your friends/family picked it out! 😛 I hope they don’t guess the new one anytime soon!
Deborah Brooks says
I highly recommend the exit strategy word!
Jenny says
Haha, have you ever seen Portlandia? There’s one sketch where the safe word is “cacao” and I can never hear that word now without thinking of the TV show.
Your running mojo will return! I know, when it’s hot and humid it feels like it’ll be that way forever- but it won’t. You’ll have cool beautiful weather soon and you’ll be so eager to get back out there.
Deborah Brooks says
ha no I have not seen that show! I sue hope that running mojo comes back soon
Zenaida Arroyo says
I know what you mean about the running mojo. I hope you get that desire to run again.
I laughed about the safe word. I did think it was about that safe word. 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
I hope I get my running mojo back soon too!
