Happy September! With back to school time upon us, I like to use September as a time to Reset and Recharge my own life as well as the kids’. Over the summer, I got a little lax with much of my routine and now I am ready to re-evaluate. Here are the 5 areas where I plan to make some adjustments and start the month off right.
Reset and Recharge
Meal Planning
This past month, I have gotten so bad about planning out meals especially dinners. What then happens is that I end up at the grocery store almost everyday. Yes, there is a plus to knowing the checkout people by name but it is time consuming, and I believe much more expensive to shop this way. I hate the 4 pm text from my husband asking what’s for dinner. With school starting back up next week, I will be forced to get back to planning out dinners for at least 3 days at a time. The rest of my family, are not vegetarians so I often end up cooking 2 meals but that’s a post for another day!
Nutrition
Speaking of meals, I may have enjoyed a little more than my fair share of sweets this summer. I don’t weigh myself but I can feel that perhaps I’ve been a little lenient in that area. Summer is all about fun and s’mores and ice cream occasionally. I am all about balance but I know that I feel better when I eat better. The meal planning will also help with this.
Prehab & Rehab
So….I’ve also fallen off the wagon a bit here as well. I was in a great routine of warming up pre-run and doing my whole post workout stretching and icing routine. I admit, I’ve skipped a few stretch sessions and I am starting to feel the repercussions of that. Some of old aches and pains are rearing their ugly head just when I’d like to ramp up for the fall running season.
Listening to my body
I have to get back to listening to my body and adjusting my daily workout goals if need me. If I have an 8 mile run on my plan for the day and I wake up just not feeling right, I have to alter my workout and not just push through it. I know, this is how and stay healthy for the “long run”. It is so hard for me to take a day off but I would so rather do that than take a month off due to injury. Rest days are essential for me. It’s hard not to say yes to all the things!
Sleep
Now that school is back in session, we will all be going to bed earlier. I know I need at least 7 hours of sleep to feel good and recover from my workouts.
That’s my plan on how I am going to Reset and Recharge this September.
How about you? Do you do a reset in September?

I can relate to all of these. I indulged all summer, and enjoyed every second. But I felt I needed a reboot, so I started a 6 week carb cycling program. Almost 3 weeks in and loving it. It has completely gotten my eating back on track !
Deborah Brooks says
Wow that’s really interesting looking forward to see how it works for you
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I do like getting back into a routine, altho it’s a little different this year with only one boy in school! My rest and recharge is in January, believe it or not. There’s not much going on then and I like to just chill.
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Oh I feel ya. I was doing so well with yoga and then had a couple hiccups and now I really need to get back at it. I’m planning on going to class Tuesday. Hope your recharge works!
Kayla @ Blondes Have More Run says
Summer is such an easy time to fall off track, with vacations, picnics, BBQs and just an overall laid-back feel to it. Fall is a great time to start getting back on track with meal planning, nutrition, and workouts! Thanks for the tips!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I hope so for both of us
Divya @ Eat. Teach. Blog. says
Sleep sleep sleep! I always need at least 7 hours of sleep a night – if not more!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes so important indeed!
[email protected] says
Ah… I really need to work on the sleep thing…. I have definitely been getting about 6 hours or less a night, and I need the 7 hours….
And meal planning… I’m terrible at that and there has been way toooo much eating out this summer….
Deborah Brooks says
I need 7 hours too and the meal planning and eating out this summer has certainly left me feeling like I am ready for a new start. Have a fab weekend
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
I love that quote about eating well! It really is a form of respect for our bodies!
Deborah Brooks says
I agree!

What I’m looking forward the most for September is getting back into a routine. The summer was pretty chaotic. I had a busy summer with huge goal races so it’s nice to take a slower pace for now. I love September and I agree with your, its definitely time to reset and recharge!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly! Have a great weekend
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
With the kids heading back to school it is the perfect time to hit the reset button. I’ve got to get back to meal planning and paying better attention to my sleep!
Deborah Brooks says
Me too!!

I’ve been trying hard to listen to my body this training season. I need to rest when it needs to and not get overly upset that I had to miss a run or two. Things seem to get worse when you just try to push through it.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly! It’s so easy for me to get into that kind of thinking as well and I always regret it
Mary Beth Jackson says
I am with you on the sleep- 7 is my magic number! I can dip a day or two but past that I am all out of whack! These look like great goals and it is all about respecting our self! See you for coffee!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes see you for coffee tomorrow!
Kerri McGrail says
September really is the perfect time to reset- especially with kids starting school and all of the healthy fall produce!!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it is the perfect time to do a reset for me. Have a wonderful weekend
Abbey says
Omg I so need to get more sleep this month – it’s ine of my top goals!!
Deborah Brooks says
Hope we both do!
Mary Long says
I have gotten into the habit of staying up later and thus waking up later. I am only getting 6 hours of sleep. My body needs more then that. So I need to get back on track with my sleep AND morning routines.
I am thinking about doing Sunday food prep for my lunches. I am tried of the typical “lunch foods”. I want lunch to be exciting again!
Deborah Brooks says
I’d like to do more food prep as well it would really help me for sure. Hope we both get back on track with the sleep too
Renee says
I need a reset and recharge this summer has just sucked all my motivation away!
Deborah Brooks says
It can do that! Good luck to both of us 🙂
Mikki says
I need to get back to planning out meals better too. I’ve let that slacked and makes a big difference. I also want to focus on preparing blogging posts ahead of time too.
Deborah Brooks says
OH I have wanted to try to figure out how to pre plan more posts but it’s hard to do!
Kristy from Southern In Law says
We actually tend to do a bit of a reset and recharge in September each year! Not because school is back (because the school year is different here in Australia and starts in late January/early Feb rather than mid year) but because it’s spring and we tend to feel like we’re full of energy and inspiration!
Deborah Brooks says
How interesting! But hey what ever works
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
I feel like i’ve done pretty good in the nutrition and sleep department this summer. I just hope I can maintain it this fall!
Deborah Brooks says
That’s great keep it up!
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
All great plans and all ones I can totally relate to. Meal planning helps so much with eating healthier overall.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes for sure I need to get back to it!
[email protected] says
I need to catch up on my sleep. I know I don’t get near as much as I should. My eating is something I need to change a bit too. With being in marathon training now I know that’ll make a difference.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes definitely will!
Akaleistar says
A September reset sounds lovely! I’m all for getting more sleep 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
Me too! Let’s do it 🙂
Danielle @ Wild Coast Tales says
These sound like great goals and are so similar to my own! I got pretty sick last week and it hit me that I really can’t keep going full speed ahead. Since then I’ve really been trying to get more sleep, adjusting my workout schedule slightly so I have less 6 am workouts, and just committing to less. I’m with you on resting and recharging!
Deborah Brooks says
It is so easy for me to commit to too much and want to do all the things. I am going to work on doing better at that myself too.
Esther says
What a great idea and plan! I guess I kind of do the same without really thinking about it.
Back to my normal routine and get some fall goals on the planner 🙂
