Have you been curious about the Peloton split strength training programs? Wondering what they are all about? Are they right for you? Don’t worry! I’ve tried them for the last 4 weeks and I am going to share all the deets. Here’s what you need to know.
Peloton Split Strength Training Programs
Split strength training is nothing new and many gym goers have been training this way for years. These types of training programs were first released in 2022 for Peloton and they have continue to add more instructors and intensity levels.
What is split strength training?
A more traditional style of strength training that utilizes heavier weights with the intention of muscle building. The 3 day programs are designed to work specific muscles each day and allow the other muscles to rest. The intent is to do 3 classes per week with rest days in between. The current programs offer 1 week of workouts that are designed to be repeated for 4 weeks. Each class is 30 minutes.
This style of strength training allows you to work targeted muscles harder on specific days. As you repeat the workouts for the 4 weeks, you have the opportunity to up your weights and or intensity as well as get a gauge on progress. The instructors did mention that they prefer to train this way themselves so there’s that.
Why choose a split strength program?
I’ve been a Peloton strength class fan for the past 4 years switching around between various instructors to create my own schedule. I have also used the Hardcore calendar for planning. Normally, I would stack a few classes to make sure I hit all the body parts in a week. I was ready to try something a little more challenging and the split strength programs looked like a great choice.
First, I chose JJ’s (Jermaine Johnson) 3 day intermediate split because I liked his motivational style and his challenging classes. I repeated this program for 3 weeks with 3 workouts a week. This schedule is a perfect compliment to my 3 days of running.
What I liked
I did not have to plan out my workouts and stacks in advance or on the fly. It was nice to have a program to follow weekly. The first week, I may not have pushed myself hard enough for fear that I would not be able to finish a class. It was a great opportunity to come back the next 2 weeks and challenge myself with higher reps and heavier weights. I also was reminded that working a muscle to failure is the desired result.
I found these classes a little bit more challenging than regular classes with less rest which is what I was looking for. After doing these classes for 4 weeks now, I feel stronger.
What I would change
I would like the ability to see the class plan in advance the way that we can with other Peloton classes. That way, I could plan out which weights I might choose and how hard I might go on a certain set.
It would also be nice to be able to switch around the days to fit in with my run schedule. I don’t always want to work lower body before a hard run day for example.
Where to find them?
You can find the split strength classes on the Peloton app under the programs tab.
3 day programs are currently available with JJ, Robin, Callie
5 day programs are available with Adrian, Marty and Ben

Sounds like a great option! If I used Peloton I would probably like this style of strength training. Although most weeks I prefer to do 2 45 minute strength sessions so it would be hard to get in 3.

I add onto the 30 min classes with strength and cycling to round out what I am looking for that day

This is how I would want to train–I like having the workout laid out for me. It’s nice to see Peloton really challenging their members and pushing the limits!
Deborah Brooks says
After piecing together workouts for a few years, this has been a nice change for me and I love the challenge
Catrina says
Ah, I always thought that Peloton had the plan all laid out for you. You would just have to click on what kind of training you wanted (arms, chest, glutes, abs, cardio, etc.) and they would present the stack for the day according to the time available.
This makes much more sense! I would love this kind of focused training, especially when you can track the progress.
Deborah Brooks says
You can also do it the way you mentioned but these specific programs take all the guess work out of it

Thanks for the info. Glad it worked for you. If I used Peleton for strength training this would help me. I like that the workouts are organized for you.
Deborah Brooks says
I like that they are organized as well!

Thanks for the review! I have never even noticed these workouts in the app but I love JJ so I’ll have to see if this something I can challenge myself to do in the future!
Deborah Brooks says
Definitely takes the guess work out of creating your training plan

You weren’t kidding when you said these were designed to work you (or me, LOL) to failure. I’ve only done Week1, Day1 & the DOMS are outta this world. And I know that’s a good thing 🙂
Deborah Brooks says
A very good thing! I knew you would like it. Takes the time out of planning as well

I like that you mentioned that you found these classes to be a bit more challenging as that’s exactly what I am looking for. I am going to try one of the split strength programs next week or the week after depending on how my body feels, lol.
Deborah Brooks says
I definitely found them more challenging and I think you will like the structure of them

Thanks for the review. I’ve been intrigued by the program, but haven’t had time to do it yet – I am doing too many other programs/challenges. (So much to do, so little time.)
I didn’t know you were part of the #hardcore group… I’ve been choosing classes from their schedule here and there.
Deborah Brooks says
yes, I did the hardcore calendar for years and then was looking for something new. So many classes to do and try!
