I had so much fun with the my first Weekly Wrap last week, I thought I would give it a go again this week. My trainer put me on a little bit of a new training plan this week to mix it up a bit. Let’s see how it went.
New Training Plan
Monday
Met my trainer at the gym to chat about my new training plan. I think he was a little sick of my complaining/whining about how how my foot was still bothering me and I was worried about performing well on my spring tri races. So…he very nicely suggested that I would perhaps do better if I dropped a few lbs before my races. Ok then! Kind of asked for that one.
For the next 2 weeks, he suggested I do high cardio weeks with a lot more biking and swimming and a little less running. I can bike or elliptical for a longer amount of time so in theory burn more calories than I might on a shorter run. I was willing to give it a try. Monday we did a short treadmill run followed by a swim. I was really surprised that I was able to run a minute faster per mile on the treadmill than I have been outside lately. Does that happen to any of you?
Tuesday
1 hour cycle class followed by 40 swim
Wednesday
1.5 hours of kickboxing, strength training and elliptical with trainer.
Thursday
After a restless night, I woke up exhausted and did not want to workout at all. Per my new plan, my usual run day was replaced by a 30 min elliptical and a 75 minute indoor bike ride. That is a long time on an indoor bike my friends when you are alone. I caught up on lots of DVR shows for sure. Glad that I did it but mentally tough.
Friday
1 hour cycle class followed by 1 hour swim. Finally figured out how to use the GoPro underwater. This was supposed to be a “double day” so later in the afternoon, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical. I was pretty wiped but rallied after a big cup of coffee. Spent the rest of the evening making a huge pot of soup for soup club swap this Sunday.
This month I made a Veggie Enchilada Soup topped with homemade tortilla strips, avocado and cheese. Super yum- recipe coming soon.
Saturday
Hit a hot yoga class for some much needed stretching and relaxing. Spent the afternoon photographing my Meatless Monday recipe for this week. If you like Polenta, you don’t want to miss this one tomorrow. Sneak Peek:
Sunday
Runday! I have been dying to get out there and run and today’s warmer temps were much appreciated. We decided to switch things up a bit and meet at the highs school track.
Soup Club swap is today and looking forward to seeing what my friends are bringing today. Luckily, my family has no interest in sharing them with me. Busy week around here and that’s my Weekly Wrap!
Tell me:
Do you run faster on a treadmill? Do you ever do high cardio weeks with less running?
Thanks to Tricia and Hoho for the fun linkup!
And Ilka and Angela
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I hope that doing a little less running helps your foot! I actually think I did more cardio this week by switching to the bike. I wasn’t letting myself run for more than 30-40 minutes because of my foot, but I feel comfortable biking for longer than that.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly! I had also cut my run time down for my foot and consequently was not doing as much exercise overall. I can definitely bike for longer than I can run. We will see what happens!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Warmer temps. Grumble, grumble. Not that it’s super cold today, actually, but obviously with all the snow not so warm either.
Nope, I’m always running — but I get where your trainer is coming from. I do hop on my stationary bike for brief spins a few times most days (but not on long run days — I probably should!).
Deborah Brooks says
We still have not gotten any snow at all! I get where he is coming from as well so we shall see how it goes. I just realized that people do not post the weekly wrap until later in the day
Darlene says
Hate the treadmill and totally avoid it.
When I had one where I used to work, I ran slower. Not sure why. Another reason to stick to the road.
Deborah Brooks says
It had never happened before! Maybe it was broken 🙂
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I seem to run slower on the treadmill than I do outside. I’ve always wondered why!
My coach gives me tough love too. Sometimes it’s hard to hear, but it’s always spot on!
Deborah Brooks says
It is hard to hear sometimes I just hope it is worth it. We shall see!
Gina says
I just LOVE the new GoPro swimming photo. And NO…. it always seems like I’m dying on the treadmill… not going faster. Lol. I’m hoping to get back to kickboxing soon. I miss it terribly
Deborah Brooks says
I always hate the treadmill! Kickboxing is a great workout hope you are back to it soon as well
Kimberly Hatting says
I have yet to understand the treadmill. I can run faster on it, but that’s usually because I (inadvertently) have the speed set too high. I always set the incline on 2 or 3, so it just seems a lot harder than being outside (where the inclines are more gradual and not constant). And, there’s the mental factor…I just know I’m gonna hate it…so, yeah. So, I guess in answer to your question…I may be running faster, but it feels so much harder, I seldom the accomplishment. Whaaa.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes exactly it always feels harder mentally and you are right the incline is constant on a mill and varies outside. Never thought of that! Have a great week
Tricia@misssippipiddlin says
I’m so glad to see you back Deborah. You did have a very active week and I love all the variety you do.
That under water picture is super cool!!! I look forward to seeing more of these.
Hope you have a good week coming up!!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes it’s been fun to join in! Will work on some more fun photos too
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
Soup swap club sounds fun!
So how does that underwater go pro work? I don’t know much about go pros but thought you had to wear it on your head and then filmed what was in front of you.
I am SO slow on the treadmill. It seems like it takes me twice as long!
Deborah Brooks says
You can have someone else hold it which was what I did for that photo but it also can float or attach to something so you can selfie yourself. It’s fun!
HoHo Runs says
I haven’t run on a TM in ages, but I used to set it to go downhill — and yes, I could run faster. LOL. I agree that you can last so much longer on a bike! The 40+ miles (about 3 hours) I did Saturday did not wipe me out at all. Had I run for 3 hours? Yikes. That’s a very cool GoPro shot. I used mine a few times to video water skiing and captured the underworld of the lake, which is a little freaky. I’ve got a question for you. Are you more uncomfortable (saddle sore) on the trainer or indoor cycling than you are outdoors? I am. And I can’t figure out why. I’m so glad to see you back here again. Thanks for linking, Deb!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes! to the saddle question but I cannot figure out why either. I think my positioning must be better outdoors and my weight is in a different spot. What do you think?
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
So interesting that you did a ton of cardio with little running. That’s a lot of time on the bike overall! I’ll be curious to see what happens after 2 weeks. Very cool underwater pic!
Deborah Brooks says
I will be very curious too stay tuned!
Kristy from Southern In Law says
Your new plan sounds perfect. I actually can’t run on a treadmill because I’m too scared of falling, haha. I’m SO clutzy that I stick to walking 😛
Deborah Brooks says
I used to be afraid of falling off a few years ago but not now. I do have to pay more attention though
Coco says
Wow, that’s a lot of long workouts! I’m hope your feet reward you for cutting back on running! I think I’m usually faster outside than on the TM ….
Deborah Brooks says
I hope my feet reward me too! I was pretty tired this week so I hope I can keep it up
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I swap out running for different types of cardio sometimes. Occasionally I just need a break from lots of running so I’ll swap in a cycle workout or an OTF class (which incorporates small bursts of running, but still less than an outdoor run).
Treadmills push you along so to speak- they help propel you, so yes I can typically run faster on a treadmill than I can outdoors. I’ll have to get used to liking treadmills cause I have a feeling I’ll be using them quite often over the summer during marathon training- especially when the summer storms come through!
Deborah Brooks says
I think it will be good for me to mix it up so I hope it helps me the way it has for you
Sherry says
Sounds like a good week! I run slower on the treadmill. Treadmill runs seem so much harder to me.
Deborah Brooks says
They usually do to me too I dont’ know what was going on that day!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Interesting that you’re switching things up! It sounds like a good plan. The treadmill always feels so much different from being outside…sometimes I feel slower, sometimes I feel faster!
Your soup looks sooo good! Can’t wait to see the recipe!
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks coming soon!
Lesley says
I always run slower on the treadmill, but I have noticed now I’m bumping into the safety bar. I am upping the speed on my speed intervals day, but I do slow down when I’m going longer distances.
Chaitali says
That’s so interesting about the treadmill. I’ve heard other people say they can hit faster paces on the treadmill too. I’m the opposite. I seem to go slower on the treadmill. I think my form is off or something.
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t feel like I run naturally on a treadmill either!
Teresa says
Actually, when I do run on the treadmill, I usually do manage to run a little faster. I think the belt kind of propels me along. Outside you have the wind factor, hills, etc… I don’t know, maybe I’m just one of those weird ones. 🙂
That Meatless Monday pic looks delicious! I’ll have to pop over tomorrow and check out the recipe!
Will you be doing another week of high cardio? I’ll be curious to see if you feel like it has jump started your metabolism!
Deborah Brooks says
Yes I am doing another high cardio week this week so we shall see how it goes. I am feeling a little hungrier though I think. Meatless Monday recipe is up!
Ilka says
You had a great training week Deborah with a lot of cross training. One hour of cycling followed by 1 hour of swimming is pretty awesome!! The enchilada soup looks delicious and the eggplants turned out out perfect!
Now tell me who take that epic underwater pic? Love it!!
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha one of my friends helps me play photographer. The recipes both came out great
Clarinda says
I haven’t been on my bike in WAY too long! I really need to. I also haven’t run on a treadmill in probably a couple years. It usually seemed much harder than an outside run, though.
Deborah Brooks says
I have always thought it harder to run on a treadmill mentally but I think the constant movement might make it easier physically. But what do I know!?
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I’m the opposite – I feel like I can run a much faster sustained pace outside than on the treadmill. I think it’s all about boredom inside…
Do you weight your GoPro down or is the waterproof housing heavy enough to keep your GoPro from floating? Just curious, ’cause you know I’ll never stay in the water long enough to take GoPro swimming pictures!
Deborah Brooks says
ha ha that photo I actually had someone else holding it under water. I would need to weight it down to do it on my own
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com says
Sounds like a great week! I definitely run slower on a treadmill. I have had to do a lot of running on it lately and it has been a struggle!! Thanks so much for linking up at Sunday Fitness & Food.
Deborah Brooks says
Thanks fun to do!
