Well, 2024 is upon us. I, for one, am excited to get the ball rolling on this new year and put 2023 in the rearview. While I am not a resolutions person, I thought it would be fun to do my own version of an In and Out list for the year. Here goes mine.
In and Out List for 2024
If you are a regular reader around here, you probably won’t see anything too surprising on my list. I do like to take what worked for me well and lean into that while letting go of other things that don’t spark me joy. Life is too short not to do what you love and love what you do.
Lifting heavy weights is not only bringing me gains but bringing me joy. I love how I feel after a hard Peloton strength session. Doing excess cardio was something I did for decades and it does not serve me any longer.
I am bringing back more intentional walks especially in the winter time when getting outside just feels good. Even on a cold day, getting the fresh air from an afternoon walk is so refreshing.
About nutrition: Planning out a few days of meals and prepping breakfasts helps me to stay on top of hitting my protein goals. I do find it incredibly helpful to count macros to make sure that I am hitting those goals so that I can reap the benefits of all that strength training. Counting calories, however, does not serve me well.
About running: This year, I am going to focus on running for the joy and endorphin rush of running. While I do plan to increase my mileage, I am not so concerned with pace right now. I have not interest in competing with anyone or beating myself up on my own previous paces.
I am also leaning into saying yes to more adventure and trying new things (or old things I have not done in a while). Up first, returning to skiing this March.
Finally, and maybe the hardest item on my list, embracing more gratitude in my life. Hopefully, this will also lead to less negative self talk.
So that’s my In and Out list for 2024 and I’m sticking to it!

I like the idea of an in and out list. Definitely in for me (like you) is heavy lifting! After increasing my lifting to 2-3x/week, I feel so strong and empowered. Gratitude is another ‘in’ that I practiced a lot last year after I was able to experience so many fun things and share them with some really fun people. Looking forward to more of that this year.
Thank you for sharing and giving me some food for thought!

Lifting heavy and more often always makes me feel so good! It is easy for me to beat myself up over goals and I am trying to give my body more gratitude and grace

Like Wendy, I really like this list style!! I also love the way you contrasted each item.
Saying yes to more adventures and embracing the unknown is exciting!! And yay for skiing!
The “shoulds” haunt me sometimes. There are so many things I “should” be doing and sometimes it’s hard to know which ones I need to throw out!
Deborah Brooks says
Nothing good ever comes from the “should”!

These are great! I also want to lift heavy. Even though I have been strength training all year I haven’t been lifting as much weight during pregnancy and postpartum so I want to start building back up again!
Deborah Brooks says
I think that’s a great goal!

This is fun. I may be still on the outs.
Hopefully I can add some adventures.
Deborah Brooks says
This is just personalized for me. We all have our own ins and outs. 🙂

I love the In/Out idea!
One of my outs should be (will be!!) mindless scrolling. It is a hard habit to break but I will do it!
Deborah Brooks says
It sure is a hard habit to break!

I’m guessing In/Out lists are a thing, but I’ve never heard of it before and I love it. It’s funny how we do things for years and then realize they’re not serving us anymore. I also want to get more serious and organized with my strength training- the older I get the more I understand how important it is to lift heavy. And running for joy is the perfect way to describe it. And eating, and sleep… you have it all covered here.
Deborah Brooks says
Yes, I am all about getting rid of habits that don’t serve me anymore. Glad you got the card thanks for yours as well 🙂
Jenny says
Oh btw I got your New Years card- thank you!

This is such a great way to “realign” for the new year, or anytime for that matter. 2023 had some interesting twists & turns for me, but also several new & exciting paths to explore. It really all vibes down to choices… WE have the power to choose what to focus on, and it’s amazing how things fall into line with those choices.
Kimberly Hatting says
“Comes” down to choices 😉
Debbie says
This is such a great idea! I need to make my own. Mind if I steal a few of yours? 🙂 I’m all in for heavy weights and quality sleep!
Deborah Brooks says
Of course fee free!
Jenn says
Love it!
I am so glad everyone is focuisng so much on joy and things that bring them happiness. We need more of that, please!
Deborah Brooks says
