March 2024 Ultimate Coffee Date

March 2024 Ultimate Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would tell you…

I am about a week away from my first ski trip in 20 years! Did I ever tell you what happened last time I skied? Long story short, I grew up skiing yearly and was pretty confident out on the slopes. I was with my husband and then 3 and 6 year old children in Aspen, Colorado. It was the first day of our trip, the kids were safely enrolled in ski school and the hubs and I headed up the chairlift.

There was a fresh, powdery snow cover. As I exited the chairlift to start my ski run, my ski got caught in an unpacked hump and I fell. Unfortunately, my ski binding was set too tight and did not release thus causing my knee to turn in ways it was not designed to. I tore both my ACL and MCL and had to be carted off the slopes.

It was a long and difficult 6 months of surgery and rehab. My kids’ babysitter ended up becoming my sitter carting me to PT and taking my kids to school. It was a rough few months but had a happy ending. You see, this was the impetus that got me to start strength training and then running. I was hooked on feeling stronger than ever and credit that accident for leading me down the path to where I am now.

So, when my husband randomly asked if I was ready to try skiing again, no one was more surprised than I was that I said yes. We are headed back to the scene of the crime, Aspen next weekend. While I have been back there many times over the past 20 years, this will be my first time back on skis. You only live once right!

Weekly run down

Wish me luck that I return in one piece! It’s like riding a bike right? Your turn, if we were having coffee, what would you tell me? Did you have an incident that began horrible and ended up working out for the best?

About Deborah Brooks

Hi I'm Deborah! I spend my days successfully raising a husband & 2 teens in the VA/DC area. I am a lover of all things running & fitness. As a life long vegetarian, I've always been passionate about healthy living & exercise. Looking for partners in crime, I started my own chapter of Moms Run This Town (MRTT) which has grown to over 700 members. I've met so many amazing women who inspire me daily to keep moving forward. You can usually find me running with my crew and training for the next crazy adventure they talked me into. I love to keep up to date on new running & fitness trends. I definitely choose my running gear based on color and love to express my fashion sense while exercising.

I’m happy that you’re going to give it another try. Good for you! Have fun! Each winter we took our sons on a ski vacation, but once I started running marathons I got really nervous about getting out on the slopes.

Oh wow I hope you have a happy and safe return to the slopes! I ended up on crutches the last time I went skiing as well. I was jumping moguls though but yeah, binding was too tight and knee got wrenched. But that’s all behind us now! Have FUN!

Yes hoping to make it through unscathed

Well you know my story with my knee surgery (emergency surgery, nonetheless), that was my catalyst for (almost) daily walking. And, my stress fracture got me on the bike. So, yeah…two very happy endings from two really tough situations:-). That’s exciting you have your ski trip yo look forward to!

      03/01/2024 at 12:28 pm

Yes exactly. Hoping to not need any more of those types of outcomes lol

Ok. My first skiing was in France. My junior year of college. The lessons were in French. The first time my binding broke and went down the mountain without me. My friend rescued it and brought it back so I could ski.

I did ski back in the states. But I hate the cold. It’s expensive and I’m clumsy.

It was tennis and now running. No more skiing.

    Have fun. Stay uninjured.

Oh my goodness, I feel like that is something that would happen to me! I bet that was a long and frustrating recovery time. But, like you said, you used it to make you even stronger! I bet you will have so much fun and you will be so strong out there! Can’t wait to hear about it!

Good luck!!!! That’s such a horrible story- it must have been a nightmare when you were going through it- but I love how you turned it around to a positive. I’ve never been skiing and I don’t think I should start now- I have enough issues just trying to run. But, your story reminds me that every story can have a happy ending.
    HAVE FUN!

      It sure can! Thanks

OMG that’s awesome! I hope you have so much fun!

I coudn’t even get myself to chair lift the last time I went skiing! I was so afraid of hurting my ankle! Of course, my injury is much fresher than yours, so maybe I’ll try again in a few years!

    • Deborah Brooks says

      03/01/2024 at 12:32 pm

Ha waiting 20 years gave me some confidence

Oh wow, good luck with your return to the slopes! I do not know how to ski and have no balance. It would be rough to try it out, but where I grew up everyone seemed to ski! (Upstate NY) With my recent injury I’ve been trying to do biking and some strength training, so I guess that’s a positive side of being injured/not running, because I never did any of that before. Definitely not the same as your injury though!

      03/01/2024 at 12:33 pm

yes good outcomes can arise out of bad situations

You’ll be great! Plus the gear is much better these days so hopefully no mishaps or malfunctions.

See you in a few weeks!

Yes I am really excited plus I have cute snow clothes 🙂 I will see you in a few weeks

That is a big fear to face down, but I know you will have a great time — and avoid ski patrol!

    I love your outfits!

Crazy that it will be in the 60s here while you are on the slopes.

I sure hope so that is my plan

I am sure you’ll be fine. Have a great time! I’ve never been skiing and while it looks fun, it scares me too.

  13. San says

You didn’t ski for 20 years? Because you were scared to try again or for other reasons? I grew up skiing too and I will head back to Europe at the end of the month to ski with my family in the Alps (where I grew up skiing). I am so excited.

I hope you have the best trip and you’ll see… skiing is like riding a bike! Your body will remember how to do it 🙂

I really have not skied for 20 years because I was afraid of hurting myself again! Fingers crossed for an uneventful trip
